Abstract: Previous research on female athletes' burnout found that female athletes experienced higher level of burnout than their male counterpart. However, the studies were not able to identify what actually caused such higher level of burnout among female athletes. The purpose of the study was to explore the sources and contexts of burnout among female track and field athletes in a high school. Total of 13 female student-athletes were interviewed to portray their stories of burnouts using narrative inquiry. The burnout sources of female student athletes were identified into three dimensions: stories of physiological burnout as personal dimension, stories of relational burnout as interpersonal dimension, and stories of structural burnout as institutional dimension. In this study, it is indicated that most of the causes in the above three dimensions basically came from multiple role conflicts, future career foreclosure, and invisible female coach recruitment.

Abstract: Sports careers are an interesting field for adolescents who enjoy participating in sports. Sports career education provides special support to learners by educating them about occupational sustainability and even discontinuation possibilities. Most sports career education programs implemented in schools and other institutions are unsystematic and ineffective. That is, the lack of systematic guidance by educators or counselors at schools make promising adolescents with talents and/or interests in sports look for different career paths. This study developed the best content standards in sports career education for adolescents using a Delphi survey from Korean professional views. The Delphi survey included three rounds and was conducted with 20 professionals from the field. Five content domains and 30 sub-content elements were identified as the best content standards in sports. Based on the consensus, the five content domains identified were as follows: (a) understanding sports careers, (b) self-understanding in sports, (c) understanding sports-related occupations, (d) exploring sports careers, and (e) designing sports careers. The best content standards identified in this study provided important data regarding the educational resources that educators or counselors could use to assist adolescents who enjoy playing sports or who consider sports as their future career path. These standards could guide the decision-making of educators or counselors regarding the best educational content and activities for sports careers. Furthermore, these standards could play a significant role in discovering and nurturing the needs and aptitudes of a diverse group of adolescents in sports.

Abstract: The passage of Title IX in 1972 in the United States marked the initiation of research agendas, development of curricular programs, creation of pedagogy, and development of environments that address the needs of both women and men equally in educational settings. The purpose of this research was to determine how gender has been studied in extant literature in physical education. In particular, the intent of this research examination was to analyze the extent to which the concept of gender has been addressed in mainstream United States-based (US-based) journals in physical education. The liberal feministic theory guided this research investigation. Data collection involved the selection of five research, theory, and practice-based journals in physical education. Constant comparison method was used to analysis the data for the purpose of determining the themes that emerged from the literature (Goetz & LeCompte, 1984). The findings of the study revealed several perspectives related to gender in physical education. Three major themes emerged from examining the literature and they include program-centered, participation-based, and workplace-connected perspectives as related to occurrences in physical education environments.

Abstract: Background: Depression has been recognized as one of the most significant factors affecting mental health status. For this reason, several efforts to prevent and reduce depression in all ages have been made in various domains to identify the relevant factors as well as the causes of depression. The objective of this meta-analysis was to examine the effect size between physical fitness and depression in adolescents and adults. Methods: A systematic search for meta-analysis (2009-2020) was performed using PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and RISS, with key termssuch as depression, depressive illness, and physical fitness or fitness. Overall, 19 out of 448 articles were included in the meta-analysis with strict inclusion criteria. Results: The effect size is a medium between physical fitness and depression in adolescents and adults. Two fitness factors, namely cardiovascular endurance and muscle strength, are more relevant for alleviating depression in adolescents and adults, whereas agility was not related to depression. In particular, the cardiovascular fitness factor has an impact on almost all ages; however, muscular strength has less impact on depression in young adolescents, but has a great impact on older adults’ depression. Conclusion: The effect size in this study is a medium between physical fitness and depression in adolescents and adults. Thus, morelongitudinal and clinical studies with larger sample sizes are needed to clarify the relationship between physical fitness and depression.
