Abstract:
Planar waveguides in KTiOPO 4 (KTP) have been fabricated by using molten
salts of RbNO 3 , CsNO 3 , 80/20 RbNO 3 /Ba(NO 3 ) 2 (molar ratio)
and 78/19/3 CsNO 3 /Ba(NO 3 ) 2 /KNO 3 . The increase in the refractive index
of the waveguide per mole caused by the replaced Cs + is one order of magnitude
greater than that caused by Rb + . The Ba 2+ ion can contribute to
both the increase in the refractive index and the promotion of Rb diffusion. A Rb/Ba-exchanged waveguide exhibited an increase in the refractive index three times as large as that
in a Rb-exchanged one with the same surface Rb + concentration. When Ba 2+ coexists with Rb + in the molten salts, the diffusion constants of Rb + in KTP at 350°C were 2.0 µ m 2 /min for the TM mode and 2.5 µ m 2 /min for the TE mode.
