Kurzfassung: The presence of persistent heavy fog in northern India during winter creates hazardous situations for transportation systems and disrupts the lives of about 400 million people. The meteorological factors responsible for its genesis and predictability are not yet completely understood in this region. Given its high potential for socioeconomic impact, there is a pressing need for extensive research that understands the inherently complex nature of the phenomena through field observations and modeling exercises. WiFEX is a first-of-its-kind multi-institutional initiative dealing with intensive ground-based measurement campaigns for developing a suitable fog forecasting capability under the aegis of the smart cities mission of India. Measuring campaigns were conducted during the 2015–20 winters at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi, covering more than 90 dense fog events. The field experiments involved extensive suites of in situ instruments and gathered simultaneous observations of micrometeorological conditions, radiative fluxes, turbulence, droplet/aerosol microphysics, aerosol optical properties, fog water chemistry, and vertical thermodynamical structure to describe the environmental stability in which fog develops. An operational modeling framework, the WRF Model, was set up to provide fog predictions during the measurement campaign. These field observations helped to interpret the strengths and deficiencies in the numerical modeling framework. Four scientific objectives were pursued: (i) the life cycle of optically thin and thick fog, (ii) microphysical properties in the polluted boundary layer, (iii) fog water chemistry, gas–aerosol partitioning during the fog life cycle, and (iv) numerical prediction of fog. This paper presents an overview of WiFEX and a synthesis of selected observational and modeling analyses/findings related to the abovementioned scientific topics.

Kurzfassung: Doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) has low oral bioavailability due to the presence of active efflux from intestinal P-glycoprotein receptors. Because of the difficulties associated with the oral administration of DOX, there is not yet a commercially available oral formulation of DOX. Nanocarrier system was manufactured utilizing poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) and treated with chitosan to provide a surface coated. Nanoparticles (NPs) were created using a modified emulsification solvent diffusion (nanoprecipitation) method by electrostatic conjugation of chitosan to modify nanoparticle surfaces. The model was built using a Box-Behnken design with three independent components: X1 (PLGA), X2 (poloxamer 188), and X3 (chitosan concentration). The optimized chitosan-PLGA NPs had a mean particle size of 153.6 nm and a positive zeta potential of 21.51 mV. More than 85% DOX permeated through the everted gut by DOX-loaded chitosan-NPs as compared to NPs prepared with PLGA alone. Chitosan nanoparticles caused a 6-fold increase in DOX intestinal permeability. The findings pointed to the possibility of using chitosan-based nanoparticles of doxorubicin for oral treatment for cancer.

Kurzfassung: This paper aims to gauge the quality of risk disclosure in 3,872 annual reports of Indian corporates, using a risk disclosure index (RDI) developed to capture both quality and quantity of risk disclosures. Design/methodology/approach Focussing on 69 risk items, the paper uses manual textual analysis and scores risk items using an ordinal scale, as opposed to the general practice of using a dichotomous scale. Findings The average risk index is low, but greater in the post-recession period than in the pre-recession period. Most disclosures are qualitative, both backward and forward-looking, and exhibit a negative tone. In addition, company age and industry sector have a significant impact on disclosure levels. Research limitations/implications The choice and weighting of semantic qualities used to construct RDIs used in disclosure studies are inherently subjective. This exploratory study uses univariate analysis and does not explore the reasons for poor disclosure. Practical implications In addition to its usefulness for investors and companies’ management, the findings of non-compliance with certain mandatory provisions and a low average RDI is particularly relevant for policymakers and regulatory bodies. Originality/value Development of a summary measure/RDI that is novel in its differential weighting of the semantic qualities pertaining to quantification, time-orientation and tone. Further, it serves as an exploratory study about risk disclosure practices in the Indian context that reveals notable differences from findings of previous risk disclosure research. Moreover, the study examines the relationship between firms’ age and risk disclosure levels, a largely ignored aspect in disclosure research.

Kurzfassung: The objective of this paper is to study and compare the debt financing decisions and practices of the public sector, private sector and foreign controlled companies in India. It also finds out the impact of the liberalized environment, in terms of the significant changes, if any, in the phase-2 (1998-2003) of the liberalized business scenario vis-à-vis phase-1 (1992–1997). The declining trend in the debt ratios suggests that majority of the corporate firms are reducing the preference for debt. The study indicates that the profile of debt financing has significantly changed during the period covered by the study. A notable finding of the study is that there is a shift towards preference for short-term debt as against long-term debt. The economic and financial reforms have caused a significant decrease in the use of debt, particularly long-term, in financing the assets of the sample corporate enterprises in India. Throughout the period of study, ownership control was a significant factor in determining the extent of debt financing. With strong waves of globalization and liberalization sweeping across the world, those firms in India that have lagged behind are required to take a bold initiative to make qualitative changes in their debt financing decisions, if they are to remain competitive in domestic as well as international markets

Kurzfassung: Volatility of an asset or a portfolio is one of the most important parameters that are estimated in asset allocation, risk management, options pricing etc. Various approaches have been developed to estimate and forecast the volatility of an asset. These include the conditional volatility estimators like ARCH and its various improvements and the unconditional volatility estimators like the extreme value estimators. This paper analyses empirically the efficiency and bias of the various extreme value estimators in estimating the volatility across different beta levels of the 50 stocks which make up the S & P CNX Nifty index. The Garman‐Klas estimator performs the best in estimating the volatility over one day and five day return periods for high and low beta stocks, while the other return periods and beta levels portray mixed results.
