    Abstract: This study explores the role of anticipation in motion sickness. We compared three conditions varying in motion predictability and assessed the effect of anticipation on subsequent illness ratings using a within-subjects design. Background Anticipation is thought to play a role in motion sickness by reducing the discrepancy between sensed and expected sensory information. However, both the exact role and potential magnitude of anticipation on motion sickness are unknown. Method Participants ( N = 17) were exposed to three 15-min conditions consisting of repeated fore-aft motion on a sled on a 40-m rail (1) at constant intervals and consistent motion direction, (2) at constant intervals but varied motion direction, and (3) at varied intervals but consistent motion direction. Conditions were otherwise identical in motion intensity and displacement, as they were composed of the same repetitions of identical blocks of motion. Illness ratings were recorded at 1-min intervals using an 11-point motion sickness scale. Results Average illness ratings after exposure were significantly lower for the predictable condition, compared with both the directionally unpredictable condition and the temporally unpredictable condition. Conclusion Unpredictable motion is significantly more provocative compared with predictable motion. Findings suggest motion sickness results from a discrepancy between sensed and expected motion, rather than from unpreparedness to motion. Application This study underlines the importance of an individual’s anticipation to motion in motion sickness. Furthermore, this knowledge could be used in domains such as that of autonomous vehicles to reduce carsickness.

    Abstract: A high demand of interest concerning binding assays to study the consequences of posttranscriptional phosphorylation may be addressed by peptide array‐based methods. A crucial factor for de novo chemical approaches to generate such arrays is the possibility to rationally permutate phosphorylation events along a huge number of sequences. The simple principle behind this advantage is the stepwise synthesis of peptides, which allows the incorporation of either phosphorylated or nonphosphorylated derivates at serine, threonine, and tyrosine positions. In spite of several reported applications of phosphopeptide arrays, there is, to our best knowledge, no reported analysis of the efficiency of the involved techniques. Here, we analyze different coupling conditions to introduce phosphoamino acids in standard SPOT synthesis. Our results clearly indicate that EEDQ is the preferable activator and can also be used in fully automated SPOT synthesis. Copyright © 2008 European Peptide Society and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Abstract: Solid polymer electrolytes for bipolar lithium ion batteries requiring electrochemical stability of 4.5 V vs. Li/Li+ are presented. Thus, imidazolium-containing poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) networks were prepared by crosslinking UV-photopolymerization in an in situ approach (i.e., to allow preparation directly on the electrodes used). The crosslinks in the network improve the mechanical stability of the samples, as indicated by the free-standing nature of the materials and temperature-dependent rheology measurements. The averaged mesh size calculated from rheologoical measurements varied between 1.66 nm with 10 mol% crosslinker and 4.35 nm without crosslinker. The chemical structure of the ionic liquid (IL) monomers in the network was varied to achieve the highest possible ionic conductivity. The systematic variation in three series with a number of new IL monomers offers a direct comparison of samples obtained under comparable conditions. The ionic conductivity of generation II and III PIL networks was improved by three orders of magnitude, to the range of 7.1 × 10−6 S·cm−1 at 20 °C and 2.3 × 10−4 S·cm−1 at 80 °C, compared to known poly(vinylimidazolium·TFSI) materials (generation I). The transition from linear homopolymers to networks reduces the ionic conductivity by about one order of magnitude, but allows free-standing films instead of sticky materials. The PIL networks have a much higher voltage stability than PEO with the same amount and type of conducting salt, lithium bis(trifluoromethane sulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI). GII-PIL networks are electrochemically stable up to a potential of 4.7 V vs. Li/Li+, which is crucial for a potential application as a solid electrolyte. Cycling (cyclovoltammetry and lithium plating-stripping) experiments revealed that it is possible to conduct lithium ions through the GII-polymer networks at low currents. We concluded that the synthesized PIL networks represent suitable candidates for solid-state electrolytes in lithium ion batteries or solid-state batteries.

    Abstract: Native T1 has become a pivotal parameter of tissue composition that is assessed by cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR). It characterizes diseased myocardium and can be used for prognosis estimation. Recent publications have shown that native T1 is influenced by short-term fluctuations of volume status due to hydration or hemodialysis. Methods Patients from a prospective BioCVI all-comers clinical CMR registry were included, and native T1 and plasma volume status (PVS) were determined according to Hakim’s formula as surrogate markers of patient volume status. The primary endpoint was defined as combined endpoint of cardiovascular death or hospitalization for heart failure events, the secondary endpoint was defined as all-cause mortality. Results A total of 2,047 patients were included since April 2017 [median (IQR); age 63 (52–72) years, 33% female]. There was a significant although weak influence of PVS on native T1 ( β = 0.11, p & lt; 0.0001). Patients with volume expansion (PVS  & gt; −13%) showed significantly higher values for tissue markers than non-volume-overloaded patients [PVS ≤ −13%; median (IQR); native T1 1,130 (1,095–1,170) vs. 1,123 (1,086–1,166) ms, p & lt; 0.003; and T2 39 (37–40) vs. 38 (36–40) ms, p & lt; 0.0001]. In Cox regression analysis both native T1 and PVS were independently predictive of the primary endpoint and all-cause mortality. Conclusion Despite a weak effect of PVS on native T1, its predictive power was not affected in a large, all-comers cohort.

    Abstract: Objective. Driver assistance systems play an increasingly important role in modern vehicles. In the current level of technology, the driver must continuously supervise the driving and intervene whenever necessary when using driving assistance systems. The driver’s attentiveness plays an important role in this human–machine interaction. Our aim was to design a simplistic technical framework for studying neural correlates of driving situations in a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) setting. In this work we assessed the feasibility of our proposed platform. Methods. We proposed a virtual environment (VE) simulation of driver assistance as a framework to investigate brain states related to partially automated driving. We focused on the processing of auditory signals during different driving scenarios as they have been shown to be advantageous as warning stimuli in driving situations. This provided the necessary groundwork to study brain auditory attentional networks under varying environmental demands in an fMRI setting. To this end, we conducted a study with 20 healthy participants to assess the feasibility of the VE simulation. Results. We demonstrated that the proposed VE can elicit driving related brain activation patterns. Relevant driving events evoked, in particular, responses in the bilateral auditory, sensory-motor, visual and insular cortices, which are related to perceptual and behavioral processes during driving assistance. Conceivably, attentional mechanisms increased somatosensory integration and reduced interoception, which are relevant for requesting interactions during partially automated driving. Significance. In modern vehicles, driver assistance technologies are playing an increasingly prevalent role. It is important to study the interaction between these systems and drivers’ attentional responses to aid in future optimizations of the assistance systems. The proposed VE provides a foundational first step in this endeavor. Such simulated VEs provide a safe setting for experimentation with driving behaviors in a semi-naturalistic environment.

    Abstract: Background: National and international guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer associated venous thromboembolism (CAT) recommend anticoagulation treatment for 3 to 6 months and a re-evaluation for resumption depending on the individual risk of every patient. In CAT low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) was estimated to be the most effective and safest treatment option in 2015. However, it remains unclear how cancer patients with VTE were (treated in clinical daily care in Germany. In former register trials, the specific characteristics of individual cancer patients were insufficiently characterized and inadequately discussed. Special aspects of daily care are lacking in most publications. Methods: The GECAT register was set up for Berlin´s two main hospital companies Charité-Universitaetsmedizin Berlin and Vivantes, (both covering about 50 % of the hospital beds in Berlin) to document prospectively patients with a newly diagnosed VTE . Patients with the diagnosis of cancer within 2 years prior to the VTE got basis documentation by a physician after informed consent. A follow up of these patients was scheduled after 3 and 6 months per telephone interview. Points of interest were: kind and location of the VTE event, diagnostic procedures, drug and dosage of initial and follow-up anti-coagulation treatment, relapse of VTE or bleeding complications, serious adverse events, mortality, and date and reason for determination of anticoagulation. Primary objective was to evaluate the treatment reality of patients with cancer associated VTE in clinical daily practice. Results: Between May 2015 and May 2017, 382 patients (pts) with active cancer within the last 2 years and newly diagnosed VTE gave consent to this register trial. 193 (50.5%) were female, median age was 65 years (range 19-89). For 133 pts (34.8%), VTE was the primary reason for admission at hospital, 34.3% were referred by their oncologist, 13,6% by their general practitioner, 15,5% by other treating physicians and 36.6% directly via the emergency department. 182 pts (47.6%) had pulmonary embolism, 268 pts (70.2%) had venous thrombosis and 18,6%71 pts (18.6%) had both. The most common cancer sites were lung (n=57, 14,9%), gynecological (n=44, 11,5%), colorectal (n=40, 10,5%) and pancreatic cancer (n=33 8,6%); 204 pts (56%) with solid tumors presented with stage IV diseases; 60 pts (15.7%) had hematological malignancies. 279 pts (73%) received anticancer treatments at the time of diagnosis of VTE. 148 (38.7%) pts died in the 6 months study period (20 pts died in hospital after admission, 90 pts within the first 3 months and 38 pts within the 6 months follow up). Initially, the majority of pts (n=350; 91.6%) was treated with LMWH. After discharge from hospital 78.7% remained on LMWH and 12.7% were treated with direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs). After 3 months 64.9% of pts received LMWH and 26.1% DOACs; after 6 months 48.4% LMWH and 44% DOACs. Responsible for the anticoagulation treatment decisions was mostly the oncologist (58%), followed by the general practitioner (26.3%) and other physicians (15,7%) . During the initial hospital stay, 2.6% of pts had a bleeding complication and 0.8% were diagnosed with a progress of VTE. At 6 months follow up, 6.4% reported bleeding complications and 2.4% recurrent VTE. Conclusion: The GECAT register trial gives new and clinically relevant information about the clinical daily care practice of cancer patients with newly diagnosed VTE in Berlin, Germany. The treating oncologist is in most cases responsible for the treatment.     Abstract: Invariant NKT cells (iNKT cells) are innate lymphocytes that recognize lipid-derived Ags presented by the MHC class I–related protein CD1d. In this study, we analyzed the role of iNKT cells in the generation of Abs against HSV type 1 (HSV-1). In sera from healthy hman donors, we found a correlation between HSV-1–specific IgG titers and proportions of CD4+ iNKT cells. In HSV-1–infected iNKT cell–deficient mice, the amount of specific IgM and IgG Abs were significantly reduced compared with wild-type mice. Moreover, iNKT cell–deficient mice were unable to upregulate CD1d on B cells and failed to establish an IFN-γ–driven subtype profile of HSV-1–specific IgG Abs. In spleens of HSV-1–infected wild-type mice, the percentage of iNKT cells expressing CCR6, a marker for inflammatory iNKT cells secreting IFN-γ, was significantly decreased at 6 mo postinfection, suggesting that these cells were released from the spleen to other tissues. Finally, in vitro experiments showed that in the absence of CD1d-restricted cells, HSV-1 induced markedly lower IFN-γ production in splenocytes from naive mice. Taken together, our results indicate that iNKT cells shape the Ab response to HSV-1 infection and provide a basis for rational development of antiviral vaccines.
