    Abstract: Sleep strongly activates interictal epileptic activity through an unclear mechanism. We investigated how scalp sleep slow waves (SSWs), whose positive and negative half‐waves reflect the fluctuation of neuronal excitability between the up and down states, respectively, modulate interictal epileptic events in focal epilepsy. Methods Simultaneous polysomnography was performed in 45 patients with drug‐resistant focal epilepsy during intracranial electroencephalographic recording. Scalp SSWs and intracranial spikes and ripples (80–250 Hz) were detected; ripples were classified as type I (co‐occurring with spikes) or type II (occurring alone). The Hilbert transform was used to analyze the distributions of spikes and ripples in the phases of SSWs. Results Thirty patients with discrete seizure‐onset zone (SOZ) and discernable sleep architecture were included. Intracranial spikes and ripples accumulated around the negative peaks of SSWs and increased with SSW amplitude. Phase analysis revealed that spikes and both ripple subtypes in SOZ were similarly facilitated by SSWs exclusively during down state. In exclusively irritative zones outside SOZ (EIZ), SSWs facilitated spikes and type I ripples across a wider range of phases and to a greater extent than those in SOZ. The type II and type I ripples in EIZ were modulated by SSWs in different patterns. Ripples in normal zones decreased specifically during the up‐to‐down transition and then increased after the negative peak of SSW, with a characteristically high post‐/pre‐negative peak ratio. Significance SSWs modulate interictal events in an amplitude‐dependent and region‐specific pattern. Pathological ripples and spikes were facilitated predominantly during the cortical down state. Coupling analysis of SSWs could improve the discrimination of pathological and physiological ripples and facilitate seizure localization.

    Abstract: Life and civilization in arid regions depend on the availability of freshwater. Arid alpine river basins, where hydrological processes are highly sensitive to rapid warming, act as vital water towers for lowland oases. However, scientific understanding of precipitation variability and related cryosphere–hydrology processes is extremely limited because of the scarcity of in situ observations. The upper Danghe River basin (UDB; ∼14,000 km 2 ) is an arid and westerly dominated basin on the northeastern Tibetan Plateau and is the water source for the Dunhuang Oasis in China. We have established a comprehensive cryosphere–hydrometeorology observation network in the basin since 2014. At present, the network consists of 21 automatic rain gauges, 22 soil freeze–thaw monitoring stations, 4 automatic weather stations (AWS), and a 50-m gradient meteorological tower with an eddy covariance system. In particular, the 18 sites, located in remote areas without public networks, are equipped with new-generation BeiDou-3 communication terminals that enable the observations to be easily, safely, and reliably read and quality controlled in near–real time from offices in the city or at home. This integrated observation network over the UDB that facilitates the monitoring of cryosphere–hydrology processes, land–atmosphere interactions, and local weather processes. In addition, the observations are helpful for the objective evaluation, and continual improvement, of hydrological models, satellite-retrieval products, and reanalysis datasets. Finally, the network is expected to promote a better understanding of the status and role of water towers in arid zones and to provide basic data support for the sustainable development of the Dunhuang Oasis and the Belt and Road.

    Abstract: Advancing urbanization in China requires large-scale high-rise construction and underground transportation projects. Consequently, there is an increasing number of deep foundation pits adjacent to water bodies, and accidents occur frequently. This study uses a numerical simulation method to study the stability of the deep foundation pit near water based on the Biot three-dimensional seepage-stress coupling model, with the open-cut section on the south bank of the Jinan Yellow River Tunnel Project as the engineering field test. This indicates the following: (1) the maximum horizontal displacement of the diaphragm wall occurred in the fifth excavation stage, and a horizontal brace effectively controlled the inward horizontal displacement of the foundation pit; (2) considering the effect of seepage in the soft soil foundation, the maximum vertical displacement of the ground surface at each excavation stage occurred adjacent to the underground continuous wall. As the depth of the foundation pit increased, the vertical surface settlement decreases gradually in the direction away from the excavation face; (3) considering the seepage conditions, within each interval of excavation of the foundation pit, the horizontal displacement of the continuous underground wall and ground settlement declined; and (4) the numerical simulation and field monitoring data were in good agreement. Under the conditions of accurate model simplification and parameter selection, numerical simulations can adequately forecast conditions of the actual project.

    Abstract: Slag Portland cement is an environmentally friendly and energy-saving product, which is widely used in cement-reinforced soil. This study used slag Portland cement-reinforced soil as the research object and P.O 42.5 + kaolin (POK) as the reference group. The carbonation depth and strength of P.S.A 42.5 + kaolin (PSK) at different curing times were analyzed using carbonation depth, uniaxial ground pressure strength, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The test results show the following: (1) The active substances in PSK samples can react with calcium hydroxide produced during cement hydration and can reduce the content of OH−. The PSK samples react with OH− and CO2 in the carbonation environment. Both processes considerably reduce the content of OH−. (2) Due to the decrease in OH− content, the carbonation durability of slag Portland cement-reinforced soil is significantly less than that of ordinary Portland cement. (3) The carbonation of slag Portland cement-reinforced soil improves its strength. (4) The results of SEM + EDS and XRD confirm the carbonation depth and strength of the POK and PSK samples. The results show that PSK has important applications in subgrade or building grouting materials and in cement-soil mixing piles (walls).

    Abstract: Wire mesh is a common material for bolt mesh supporting structures, but its application in engineering has revealed many defects. At the same time, with the development of new materials for civil engineering, the new material mesh performance and cost show outstanding advantages over wire mesh. In this paper, the feasibility of replacing wire mesh with steel-plastic geogrid as an alternative material is carefully studied through indoor tests and field applications. The following conclusions were drawn from a comparative analysis with wire mesh, mainly in terms of mechanical properties, engineering characteristics, and construction techniques: (1) in terms of mesh wire strength, wire mesh is slightly better than steel-plastic geogrid, but in the case of similar tensile strength, the amount of steel used per unit length of steel geogrid bars is only 36.75% of that of steel-plastic geogrid, while the tensile strength of the high-strength steel wire attached to the steel-plastic geogrid belt is about 3.3 times that of steel bars; (2) in terms of junction peel strength, both values are similar, with the injection-moulded junction being 1154.56–1224.38 N and the welded junction of 4 mm mesh being 988.35 N; (3) in terms of the strength of the mesh, steel-plastic geogrid is better than wire mesh, and with the same mesh wire strength, the bearing capacity of steel-plastic geogrid is increased by about 63.17% and the contribution of the mesh wire bearing capacity is increased by 83.66%, with the damage mainly being in the form of wire breakage in the ribbon causing ribbon failure, leading to further damage to the mesh; (4) in terms of the engineering application of steel-plastic geogrid compared to wire mesh, the utilization rate of mesh increases by about 24.99%, the construction efficiency increases by about 14.10%, and the economic benefit increases by about 45.31%. In practical application, the steel-plastic geogrid has good adhesion with surrounding rock and strong corrosion resistance. According to the above research analysis, the steel-plastic geogrid is feasible to replace the wire mesh for bolt mesh supporting.

    Abstract: Maternally inherited diabetes and deafness (MIDD) is often caused by the m.3243A 〉 G mutation in mitochondrial DNA. Unfortunately, the characteristics of MIDD, especially long‐term outcomes and heteroplasmic changes, have not been well described previously. The purpose of this study was to describe the clinical and genetic features of a family with MIDD after 10 years of follow‐up.A 33‐year‐old male patient with typical characteristics of MIDD, including early‐onset diabetes, deafness, and low body mass index, was admitted to our department. Further investigation revealed that the vast majority of his maternal relatives suffered from diabetes with or without deafness. A detailed family history was then requested from the patient and a pedigree was constructed. The patient suspected of MIDD was screened for mutations using whole mitochondrial DNA sequencing. Candidate pathogenic variants were then validated in other family members through Sanger sequencing. The patient was diagnosed with MIDD, with inherited m.3243A 〉 G mutation in the mitochondrially encoded tRNA leucine 1 (MT‐TL1) gene, after 10 years of symptom onset. The patient was then treated with insulin and coenzyme Q10 to improve mitochondrial function. During the follow‐up period, his fasting blood glucose and HbA1c levels were improved and the incidence of diabetic ketoacidosis was significantly reduced. Our findings indicate that whole mitochondrial DNA sequencing should be considered for patients suspected of MIDD to improve the efficiency of diagnosis and prognosis.

    Abstract: The introduction and rise of new geotechnical composite material greatly promote the development of civil engineering construction. Studying the mechanical properties of bidirectional geogrid and determining the reinforced soil retaining wall design calculation based on the friction reinforcement theory provide theoretical basis and research foundation for its application in the practical engineering. The mechanical properties of bidirectional geogrid are analyzed in depth through theoretical analysis, experimental research and numerical simulation. The mechanical property tests in light of different affecting factors are studied and the application of geogrid material in the reinforced soil retaining wall is simulated, thus yielding the conclusions as follows: (1) Study the mechanical properties in different temperature, loading and packing with the help of indoor pullout test and analyze the main factors affecting the mechanical properties of the geogrids in theory. (2) Analyze the reinforced soil retaining wall with friction reinforcement principle. Determine the calculation method of soil pressure and reinforcement and the check formula of the overall stability of the whole wall design and calculate the geogrid reinforced soil retaining wall in theory. (3) Simulate the bidirectional geogrid reinforced soil retaining wall with FLAC 3D and analyze the force of the retaining wall. Study the stress-strain curve according to the parameters of reinforced geogrid and retaining wall and analyze the overall force to guide the safety of the site construction. (4) Apply to the reinforced soil the retaining wall design. Thus the result is achieved that bidirectional geogrid is simple in construction, excellent in performance and economic in cost and has a good application prospect and social benefit.
