Abstract: BACKGROUND: Depression is frequent in elderly population. Recognizing the predisposing factors that trigger depression in the elderly is the right step to prevent the worsening prognosis of depression in the elderly. AIM: This study tried to identify essential comprehensively factors contributing to increasing happiness and quality of life (QoL) in the elderly depression. METHODOLOGY: A systematically article abstracts search from EBSCO, ProQuest, Science Direct, Willey Online Library, Scopus, and SINTA. This method of writing was carried out and reported by the guidelines of diagram Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses. Risk of bias in included studies assessed by Cochrane systematic reviews of intervention. RESULTS: Twenty-five studies were eligible for inclusion in the review from 993 screening process records identified through database searching, duplicates removed, and full-text articles excluded with reasons. Essential factors influencing the QoL in the elderly depression are lack of developmental tasks stimulation, religious belief, satisfaction regarding the QoL, suffering from more chronic disease, experiencing an adverse event, and lack of ability to take self-care. The most influential factor in increasing happiness in the elderly is a feeling of satisfaction with life achievement. CONCLUSION: Clear understanding of the depression predisposing factors in the elderly is critical to better and effectively achieving happiness. The elderly perception about the QoL and how it contributes to their lives is essential information for providing practical nursing interventions in geriatric settings.

Abstract: The elderly and their caregivers are at higher risk from Coronavirus Disease-2019, particularly for elderly with chronic health conditions. To prevent the transmission of the virus, those elderly issued strict physical distance, restricting most interactions between the elderly and their caregivers. On the other side, caregivers can serve as crucial and trusted partners in the elderly’s care to curb the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Hence, this study aims to analyze the knowledge, attitudes, practices (KAP), and the role of caregivers in providing services to the elderly during the outbreaks. A descriptive quantitative study was conducted from May to June 2020. The survey was utilizing Google Forms in four cities in Indonesia. A total of 317 out of 400 participants had completed the survey. The knowledge of the COVID-19 score was 79.50%, attitude 92.11%, and practice 90.54%. The caregivers’ role in protecting the elderly from COVID’s infection was about 98.42%. They could continue their routine activities during physical distancing 84.54%, treated elderly by not going to the hospital (60.04%), not visited any crowded place, wore masks and washed their hand after activity (87.38%). They agreed that government would finally successfully control COVID-19 (90.22%). This study concluded that the knowledge, attitude, practice and role of caregivers on COVID-19 effectively prevents the caregivers neglecting the elderly during the COVID-19 outbreak. Future information on elderly care need to consider not just the risks of the virus, but also the healthy lifestyle.

Abstract: The incidence of Alzheimer's dementia worldwide is increasing rapidly. It is estimated that nearly 50 million people are diagnosed with dementia worldwide and 20.9 million in Asia Pacific. In Indonesia, it is estimated that there were around 1.2 million people with dementia in 2016, which will increase to 2 million in 2030 and 4 million people in 2050. The elderly/people with dementia need assistance from family members to carry out daily activities because of its limitations. This research aims to understand the needs of elderly people with dementia and caregivers who accompany them in nursing homes, to develop dignified services. The research was conducted in Jakarta with 22 research subjects, consisting of 10 elderly with dementia and ten caregivers as the primary informants and two key informants who were the caretakers of the nursing home. The method used is qualitative, with data collection techniques through participant observation, in-depth interviews, document studies, and Focus Group Discussions. Data analysis used the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) method. The results showed that all elderly with dementia had a history of comorbidities (hypertension, diabetes mellitus, stroke, psychosis, insomnia, dyslipidemia, presbycusis), so they experienced moderate to severe dependence, which indicated the need for long-term care. Meanwhile, all caregivers are formal caregivers (not from the family) but have not received adequate education and training on dementia and methods of assisting the elderly with dementia.

Abstract: Gender differences in cognitive function may diminish with age. We investigated gender and gender-by-age interactions in relation to verbal learning. Cross-sectional data were available from seven cohorts. Meta-analyses indicated that overall verbal learning favored women. Performance declined with age for both genders and there was little difference between genders in the rate of decline in healthy elderly cohorts. However, impoverished older cohorts with poor health and slightly better educated men showed trends for a male advantage occurring from the age of 70 years onwards. The reverse was seen in cohorts where more women had better education and showed less decline with an older age. Controlling for education in analyses did not affect this systematic bias. Slight demographic differences within cohorts may affect gender sensitive tests with age. However, gender differences are small in the elderly and do not indicate a need for separate gender norms for immediate verbal recall dementia screening tests.
