Abstract: A PHA producing bacterium (strain QN271) was selected from mangrove soil samples collected from Quang Ninh province by using the Nile red dying technique. PHA accumulation in the selected bacterium strain was confirmed by transmission electron microscope. With the exception of maltose or sucrose, the bacterium strain was found to be able to synthesize PHA from various carbon sources (glucose, xylose, fructose, glycerol, and glucose plus propionate). The strain accumulated poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) from glucose, fructose, xylose, and glycerol whereas poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalarate) was produced when a combination of glucose and propionate was included in the culture medium. Fructose was found to be most suitable substrate for PHA synthesis by strain QN271. PHA content of 63.3% and CDW of 6 g/L were obtained after 32 hrs of cultivation in fructose medium.

Abstract: In the present study, a lactic acid producing bacterium was isolated and screened from fermented mustard green. The selected bacterial strain (V156) was classified into genus Lactobacillus. High lactic acid concentration of 101.6 g/L and productivity of 2.82 g/L/h were efficiently achieved by Lactobacillus sp. V156 after 36 h of cultivation in fed-batch fermentation using ammonium hydroxide as the neutralizing agent. The production of high lactic acid in short cultivation time demonstrates that Lactobacillus sp. V156 is a promising strain for L-lactic acid production

Abstract: The effect of physical parameters such as temperature and pH on the production, activity, and stability of α-amylase from Bacillus subtilis V37 was investigated. The results indicated that the optimum culture conditions for enzyme activity were pH 7.0 and 35 oC. The optimum pH and temperature for enzyme activity were 6.0 and 70 oC. The crude enzyme was found to be stable in the pH range of 5.0 to 7.0. The enzyme was stable for 1 h at a temperature from 30 to 80 oC; nearly 100% of enzyme activity remained at temperatures of 30 - 40 oC, and about 34% of original activity remained at a temperature of 80 oC. These features demonstrated that α-amylase from B. subtilis V37 can be applied in many areas such as the food, fermentation, and animal feed industries.

Abstract: Background : Sleep Apnea Syndrome (SAS) is a cause of hypertension, increasingcardiovascular risk and cardiovascular disease such as stroke, coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction, arrhythmias, heart failure, increasing the risk of death in patients with heart disease, independent of other causative factors. So far, in Vietnam there are very few studies on Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) and cardiovascular risk factors . Self-making SASD07 is trustly for detecting OSAS with statistical significiant in comparision with StarDustII (gold criteria). Subjects and Methods: Cross sectional study, comparision with control group: 136 peoples (68 in disease group and 68 in control group). Patients were parallelly measured with StarDustII and SASD07 to detect OSAS and find the corellation with cardiovascular risk factors. Results: There is a positive correlation between SBP with the severity of OSAS (r = 0.459, p 〈 0.001), positive correlation between DBP with the severity of OSAS (r = 0.352, p 〈 0.003). No statistically significant differences between severe OSAS and fasting blood glucose, cholesterol, HDL Cholesterol, Non - HDL Cholesterol, LDL Cholesterol and TG median (p 〉 0.05). There is a positive correlation between AHI and neck circumference (r = 0.511, p 〈 0.001), waist circumference (r = 0.585, p 〈 0.001), BMI (r = 0.380, p 〈 0.01). SASD07 diagnostic value of detecting OSAS compared with StarDustII have Kappa = 0.72, (standard error 0.06, p 〈 0.001). Conclusion: The risk factors related to OSAS in our study is neck circumference, waist circumference, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure. SASD07 have a good value in diagnosing of OSAS compared with polysomnography StarDustII. Key words: Sleep Apnea Syndrome, cardiovascular risk factor, SASD07.

Abstract: Background: Determining the value of some predictive indices of metabolic syndrome, especially in terms of simple indices, easy implementation, non-invasive, cheap price and effectiveness, is to allow people to easily get access to those tests, simultaneously doctors at the grassroot levels can apply and implement to save costs for local people. Objectives: This study aims to identify the ability of the waist to height ratio for the identification of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in the population of Thua Thien Hue Province. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out with 1600 people over 25 years olds that chosen from Thua Thien Hue Province by a random sampling procedure. Metabolic syndrome was defined according to the IDF, NHLBI, AHA, WHF, IAS and IASO (2009). Receiver operator curve (ROC) analyses were used to identify the best predictor of MetS. Results: The ROC analysis revealed that had good values for predicting MetS in the Thua Thien Hue province population (the ROC curves (AUCs) 〉 0.8, p 〈 0.05). The optimal cut off values for WHtR for predicting MetS were 〉 0.54 for men (AUC= 0.82, sensitivity = 69.3% and specificity = 83.4%) and 〉 0.51 for women (AUC= 0.85, sensitivity = 76.1% and specificity = 78.8%). Conclusions: The waist to height ratio had good values for predicting MetS in population of Thua Thien Hue Province. We propose the optimal cut off point of WHtR for the best predictor of MetS as 〉 0.54 in men and 〉 0.51 in women. Key words: prediction, the waist to height ratio

Abstract: Background:Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a cluster of metabolic abnormalities, characterized as central obesity, dysglycemia, raised blood pressure, elevated triglyceride (TG) level, and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) level. MetS is associated with cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes morbidity and mortality, and all-cause mortality. It is alarming that the prevalence of MetS is high and increasing in both developing and developed nations. Thus, early identification and treatment of individuals with MetS is essential to prevent the adverse consequences related to its development. However, the diagnostic criteria of MetS are complex to conduct, which makes early identification of individuals with MetS challenging. Of these components of MetS, central obesity is considered as the most important component. As an indirect measure of visceral fat, waist circumference (WC) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) are an easy, cost-effective, and non-invasive metric useful for identification of central obesity and, in turn, may be an effective predictor of the risk of metabolic syndrome. However, ethnic and racial variation among populations from different regions warrants different cutoff points to diagnose metabolic syndrome. Objective: To identify the optimal cut off values for waist circumference (WC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) for predicting metabolic syndrome (MetS) among population in Quang Dien District, Thua Thien Hue Province. Methods: A cross-sectional study carried out 386 people over 25 years olds chosen from two communities from Quang Dien district by stratified sampling procedure. Metabolic syndrome was defined according to the IDF, NHLBI, AHA, WHF, IAS, IASO (2009). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were generated to assess sensitivity and specificity for different cut off values of WC, WHR. Results: The optimal cut off values for WC for predicting MetS were 87 cm for men (AUC= 0.852, sensitivity = 85.7% and specificity = 83.8%) and 76 cm for women (AUC= 0.871, sensitivity = 85% and specificity = 74.73%). The optimal cut off values for WHR for predicting MetS were 0.9 for men (AUC= 0.823, sensitivity = 85.71% and specificity = 76.15%) and 0.86 for women (AUC= 0.801, sensitivity = 80% and specificity = 66.48%). Conclusion: We propose the optimal cut off point for WC, WHR for the best predictor of MetS as 87 cm, 0.9 in men and 76 cm, 0.86 in women respectively in Quang Dien population.
