    Abstract: The antiproton experiment PANDA at FAIR is designed to bring hadron physics to a new level in terms of scope, precision and accuracy. In this work, its unique capability for studies of hyperons is outlined. We discuss ground-state hyperons as diagnostic tools to study non-perturbative aspects of the strong interaction, and fundamental symmetries. New simulation studies have been carried out for two benchmark hyperon-antihyperon production channels: $${\bar{p}}p \rightarrow {\bar{\varLambda }}\varLambda $$ p ¯ p → Λ ¯ Λ and $${\bar{p}}p \rightarrow {\bar{\varXi }}^+\varXi ^-$$ p ¯ p → Ξ ¯ + Ξ - . The results, presented in detail in this paper, show that hyperon-antihyperon pairs from these reactions can be exclusively reconstructed with high efficiency and very low background contamination. In addition, the polarisation and spin correlations have been studied, exploiting the weak, self-analysing decay of hyperons and antihyperons. Two independent approaches to the finite efficiency have been applied and evaluated: one standard multidimensional efficiency correction approach, and one efficiency independent approach. The applicability of the latter was thoroughly evaluated for all channels, beam momenta and observables. The standard method yields good results in all cases, and shows that spin observables can be studied with high precision and accuracy already in the first phase of data taking with PANDA.

    Abstract: The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) in Darmstadt, Germany, provides unique possibilities for a new generation of hadron-, nuclear- and atomic physics experiments. The future antiProton ANnihilations at DArmstadt (PANDA or $$\overline{\mathrm{P}}$$ P ¯ ANDA) experiment at FAIR will offer a broad physics programme, covering different aspects of the strong interaction. Understanding the latter in the non-perturbative regime remains one of the greatest challenges in contemporary physics. The antiproton–nucleon interaction studied with PANDA provides crucial tests in this area. Furthermore, the high-intensity, low-energy domain of PANDA allows for searches for physics beyond the Standard Model, e.g. through high precision symmetry tests. This paper takes into account a staged approach for the detector setup and for the delivered luminosity from the accelerator. The available detector setup at the time of the delivery of the first antiproton beams in the HESR storage ring is referred to as the Phase One setup. The physics programme that is achievable during Phase One is outlined in this paper.

    Abstract: The study of baryon excitation spectra provides insight into the inner structure of baryons. So far, most of the world-wide efforts have been directed towards $$N^*$$ N ∗ and $$\varDelta $$ Δ spectroscopy. Nevertheless, the study of the double and triple strange baryon spectrum provides independent information to the $$N^*$$ N ∗ and $$\varDelta $$ Δ spectra. The future antiproton experiment $$\overline{\text{ P }}$$ P ¯ ANDA will provide direct access to final states containing a $${\overline{\varXi }}\varXi $$ Ξ ¯ Ξ pair, for which production cross sections up to $$\mu \text{ b }$$ μ b are expected in $$\bar{\text{ p }}$$ p ¯ p reactions. With a luminosity of $$L=10^{31}$$ L = 10 31 cm $$^{-2}$$ - 2 s $$^{-1}$$ - 1 in the first phase of the experiment, the expected cross sections correspond to a production rate of $$\sim 10^6\, \text{ events }/\text{day }$$ ∼ 10 6 events / day . With a nearly $$4\pi $$ 4 π detector acceptance, $$\overline{\text{ P }}$$ P ¯ ANDA will thus be a hyperon factory. In this study, reactions of the type $$\bar{\text{ p }}$$ p ¯ p $$\rightarrow $$ → $${\overline{\varXi }}^{+}$$ Ξ ¯ + $$\varXi ^{*-}$$ Ξ ∗ - as well as $$\bar{\text{ p }}$$ p ¯ p $$\rightarrow $$ → $${\overline{\varXi }}^{*+}$$ Ξ ¯ ∗ + $$\varXi ^{-}$$ Ξ - with various decay modes are investigated. For the exclusive reconstruction of the signal events a full decay tree fit is used, resulting in reconstruction efficiencies between 3 and 5%. This allows high statistics data to be collected within a few weeks of data taking.

    Abstract: This paper reports on Monte Carlo simulation results for future measurements of the moduli of time-like proton electromagnetic form factors, $$|G_{E}|$$ | G E | and $$|G_{M}|$$ | G M | , using the $$\bar{p} p \rightarrow \mu ^{+} \mu ^{-}$$ p ¯ p → μ + μ - reaction at $$\overline{\text {P}}\text {ANDA}$$ P ¯ ANDA (FAIR). The electromagnetic form factors are fundamental quantities parameterizing the electric and magnetic structure of hadrons. This work estimates the statistical and total accuracy with which the form factors can be measured at $$\overline{\text {P}}\text {ANDA}$$ P ¯ ANDA , using an analysis of simulated data within the PandaRoot software framework. The most crucial background channel is $$\bar{p} p \rightarrow \pi ^{+} \pi ^{-}$$ p ¯ p → π + π - , due to the very similar behavior of muons and pions in the detector. The suppression factors are evaluated for this and all other relevant background channels at different values of antiproton beam momentum. The signal/background separation is based on a multivariate analysis, using the Boosted Decision Trees method. An expected background subtraction is included in this study, based on realistic angular distributions of the background contribution. Systematic uncertainties are considered and the relative total uncertainties of the form factor measurements are presented.

    Abstract: The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is a large, infrared space telescope that has recently started its science program which will enable breakthroughs in astrophysics and planetary science. Notably, JWST will provide the very first observations of the earliest luminous objects in the universe and start a new era of exoplanet atmospheric characterization. This transformative science is enabled by a 6.6 m telescope that is passively cooled with a 5 layer sunshield. The primary mirror is comprised of 18 controllable, low areal density hexagonal segments, that were aligned and phased relative to each other in orbit using innovative image-based wave front sensing and control algorithms. This revolutionary telescope took more than two decades to develop with a widely distributed team across engineering disciplines. We present an overview of the telescope requirements, architecture, development, superb on-orbit performance, and lessons learned. JWST successfully demonstrates a segmented aperture space telescope and establishes a path to building even larger space telescopes.

    Abstract: Surgery for male fertility is ergonomically demanding secondary to the tedious and lengthy nature of surgeries performed. The standard operating microscope places surgeons in uncomfortable positions including a “heads down” posture which has been demonstrated to predispose microsurgeons to cervical strain and chronic pain. The 4K-3D exoscope eliminates the need for eyepieces allowing for a “heads up” posture. Additionally, given the standing position of surgeons using the 4K-3D exoscope, it is thought that surgeons may be able to maintain a more “neutral” upper arm position therefore reducing upper body stress. Objective This study aims to stratify ergonomic risk amongst infertility surgeons using the 4K-3D exoscope versus the operating microscope with wearable technology. Secondary objectives included surveying for optical differences and teaching utility between surgical modalities during infertility microsurgery. Methods The participating right-handed surgeon was fitted and calibrated with three wearable sensor inertial measurement units (IMUs) on the head and upper arms in the neutral position. Each IMU is comprised of an accelerometer, magnetometer, and gyroscope. This allows for measurement of the surgeon’s joint angle change throughout 4K-3D and operating microscope use. Microscopic surgical procedures which were considered for inclusion were: vasovasostomy, vasoepididymostomy, varicocelectomy, testicular sperm extraction (mTESE), and microsurgical epididymal sperm aspiration (MESA). The previously validated rapid upper limb assessment (RULA) was used to determine the proportion of time spent in ranges of risk. Categories 1-4 were assigned for the head and upper extremities (4= highest ergonomic risk). Finally, a 5-point Likert scale questionnaire related to ergonomic, optical, and teaching metrics was administered to six microsurgeons. Chi-squared analysis was used to test for differences in proportions. Results A total of 500 and 479 microsurgical minutes from 4K-3D exoscope and operating microscope guided surgeries respectively were analyzed. Examination of the bilateral upper extremities showed that the 4K-3D exoscope significantly favored score 1 positioning compared to the operating microscope indicating a lower level of ergonomic stress with 4K-3D exoscope usage (75.3% vs. 51.5%; p & lt; 0.0001). Finally, the operating microscope exposed the surgeon to a higher level 3 flexion (5.5% vs. 1.9%; p & lt;0.0001). When examining the head and neck, significantly more time was spent in the “extension” position (any degree of neck extension past neutral) using the 4K-3D exoscope compared to the operating microscope (51.8% vs. 19.5%; p & lt; 0.0001). During 4K-3D exoscope use, 67% of neck extension time was between 0-10 degrees. Additionally, 0-10 degrees of flexion (score 1) were maintained 33.6% vs. 7.7% of the time in operating microscope vs. 4K-3D exoscope respectively (p & lt; 0.0001). Assessment of the 5-point Likert scale survey demonstrated that most surgeons favored the 4K-3D exoscope in questionnaire topics of ergonomics, optics/clarity, lighting, and teaching. Conclusions The 4K-3D exoscope offers the surgeon favorable ergonomic positioning for the upper extremities which may reduce upper body work stress related injury. Similarly, a greater proportion of operative time was spent with the neck in mild extension with 4K-3D exoscope utilization which may place the patient in a “low risk” position (less than 20 degrees of extension) according to contemporary studies.     Abstract: Buried penis repairs are complex cases often requiring collaboration between urology and plastic surgery. These surgeries are often extensive, can require split thickness skin grafting (STSG) of the penile shaft, negative pressure wound vac, and have high incidence of wound complications. There are no studies that evaluate perioperative pain in patients undergoing buried penis repair. Objective In the ongoing opioid epidemic, we aim to evaluate patient risk factors and peri-operative elements that can minimize opioid use in buried penis repair. Methods A retrospective chart review of patients who underwent buried penis repair from 7/2012 to 7/2021 was performed. Patient demographics, comorbidities and perioperative data were collected, including history of chronic pain, indications, intraoperative findings, perioperative pain control, and 30-day post-operative encounters. The state’s prescription monitoring program was used to verify use of prescription pain medications prior to surgery, at discharge, and refills, collected as Morphine Equivalent Dose (MED). Results A total of 63 patients were included in analysis. Mean age was 55.9 ± 14.4 with a mean pre-op BMI of 41.99 ± 9.17. 75% required a STSG on the penile shaft. The median discharge MED (dMED) was 150, ranging from 0 to 450 MED. 36.5% required opioid refills within 30 days of surgery. This cohort was further separated into two groups: patients who were discharged with & lt; 150 MED (A) vs ≥ 150 MED (B), based on the median dMED. Three patients were excluded: two were on home opioids, one discharged on benzodiazepines. There were no differences in age, pre-op BMI, medical comorbidities (CAD, PVD, HTN, DM, psychiatric history) or history of chronic pain between the cohorts. Surgery for improvement of hygiene was more likely to have higher dMED, 40.7% (A) vs 69.7% (B), p=0.017. Other surgical indications (sexual health, voiding) showed no difference. Prior surgeries (urethral procedures, circumcision) were statistically more likely to require higher dMED, 48.1% (A) vs 72.7% (B), p=0.033. If a penile skin graft was required, there was no difference in graft size and dMED. Twenty-six patients had a hospital managed wound vac, while 19 patients had home wound vacs, but there was no difference in dMED. Although there was no standardized hospital pain regimen, patients on scheduled acetaminophen were more likely to have a lower dMED, 70.3%(A) vs 42.4% (B), p=0.021. 40.7% (A) vs 36.4% (B) of patients required opioid refills within 30 days of surgery, showing no statistical significance. Conclusions For patients who are embarking on buried penis repair, providers can pre-operatively set pain control expectations, especially for those who require repair for hygiene purposes or have had prior urologic reconstructive surgery. In the perioperative setting, this data supports the use of non-opioids, specifically scheduled acetaminophen, to minimize opioid prescribing at discharge.     Abstract: The United States opioid epidemic remains responsible for 75,673 overdose deaths in 2021. Self-medication with kratom, a Southeastern Asian plant containing the mu opioid receptor agonists mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine, is becoming increasingly prevalent. Kratom is legally available in most states with purported benefits in the self-treatment of opiate withdrawal and mood disorders. Anecdotal data linking kratom to male sexual health enhancement have not been formally investigated. Objective To objectively investigate the potential effect of kratom use on men's sexual health including ejaculatory and erectile function. Methods Under IRB approval, Twitter and Reddit (r/Kratom) were accessed to disseminate our survey featuring validated instruments (IIEF and the premature ejaculation diagnostic tool, PEDT). Sexual health prior to and after four weeks of kratom use were assessed. Descriptive statistics were used to ascertain differences between ejaculatory and erectile function with kratom use. Results Most males surveyed (n =165) were 18-40 years old (84.9%) and were white (86.7%). When examining kratom use, 82.4% (n= 136) of males used kratom for 1 or more years, with 95.8% using it at least weekly. Reasons for using kratom included an illicit drug dependency (17.6%), a prescription medicine dependency (14.5%), acute or chronic pain (39.4%), a mental health condition (63.6%), and issues with sexual health (4.8%). Of the 156 sexual health responses, 37.7% (n=59) and 20.5% (n=32) reported kratom having a positive and negative impact on their sexual health, respectively. Kratom use lead to increased time to ejaculation in 104 (66.6%) patients which was perceived as positive by 62 (59.6%). A subset of patients (n=78) answered questions about premature ejaculation prior to and after 4 weeks of kratom use. The mean pre and post kratom premature ejaculation diagnostic tool (PEDT) scores were 13.0 +/− 0.6 and 8.3 +/− 0.4 respectively (p & lt; 0.001). Ejaculation prior to 5 minutes was improved after kratom use (n=40; 51.3% vs. n=10; 12.8%) (p & lt; 0.0001). Post kratom use, more patients reported lack of frustration with ejaculation prior to desire (n=17; 21.8 % vs. n=48; 61.5%) (p & lt; 0.001). Kratom users were unlikely to report concerns regarding fertility (n=1, 6.1%), testosterone levels (n=25, 15.2%), libido (n=38, 23.0%), or erectile dysfunction (ED) (n=30, 18.2%). The mean International Index of Erectile Function score was decreased with kratom use (26.6 +/− 0.6 vs. 25.9 +/− 0.5) (p & lt; 0.05). Users rarely stopped kratom due to concerns regarding delayed ejaculation (n=5, 10%), low libido (n=8, 7.5 %), or ED (n=6, 7.9%). Conclusions Kratom users report delayed ejaculation, overall benefits to their sexual health, and a statistically significant impact on erectile function with kratom use. Clinicians treating male sexual health should be aware of kratom and its potential effect on ejaculatory and erectile function.
