    Abstract: A series of Mn I complexes containing lutidine‐based chiral pincer ligands with modular and tunable structures has been developed. The complex shows unprecedentedly high activities (up to 9800 TON; TON=turnover number), broad substrate scope (81 examples), good functional‐group tolerance, and excellent enantioselectivities (85–98 % ee ) in the hydrogenation of various ketones. These aspects are rare in earth‐abundant metal catalyzed hydrogenations. The utility of the protocol have been demonstrated in the asymmetric synthesis of a variety of key intermediates for chiral drugs. Preliminary mechanistic investigations indicate that an outer‐sphere mode of substrate–catalyst interactions probably dominates the catalysis.

    Abstract: In estuaries, the morphology of inland and offshore areas usually evolves synergistically. This study examines the decadal link between longitudinal changes in morphology of branching channels and movement of the offshore depo‐center (where sediment deposition rate is maximum) of the Yangtze River estuary, under intense human interference. Integrated data analysis is provided on morphology, runoff discharge, and ebb partition ratio from 1950 to 2017. Channel‐volume reductions and change rates between isobaths in branching channels reflect the impact of estuarine engineering projects. Ebb partition ratio and duration of discharge ≥ 60 000 m 3  s ‐1 act as proxies for the water excavating force in branching channels and runoff intensity. It is found that deposition occurs in the lower/upper sub‐reaches (or further downstream/upstream channels) of the inland north/south branching channels, and the offshore depo‐center moves southward or southeastward, as runoff intensity grows; the reverse occurs as runoff intensity declines. This is because the horizontal circumfluence in the Yangtze estuary rotates clockwise as ebb partition ratios of the north/south branching channels increase/decrease for increasing runoff, and conversely rotates anticlockwise for decreasing runoff. Land reclamation activities, the Deepwater Channel Project, and the Qingcaosha Reservoir have impacted greatly on longitudinal changes of morphology in the North Branch and the South Passage and on ebb partition ratio variations in the North/South Channel and the North/South Passage. Dam‐induced runoff flattening has enhanced deposition in the upper/lower sub‐reaches of the north/south branching channels and caused northward movement of the offshore depo‐center, except in areas affected by estuarine engineering projects. Dam‐induced longitudinal evolution of branching channel morphology and offshore depo‐center movement will likely persist in the future, given the ongoing construction of large cascade dams in the upper Yangtze and the completion of major projects in the Yangtze estuary. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Abstract: Although recently developed hybrid zinc (Zn) batteries integrate the benefits of both alkaline Zn and Zn–air batteries, the kinetics of the electrocatalytic oxygen reaction and mass transfer of the electrolyte, which are limited by the mismatched and disordered multiphase reaction's interfacial transfer channels, considerably inhibit the performance of hybrid Zn batteries. In this work, novel, continuously oriented three‐phase interfacial channels at the cathode derived from the natural structure of pine wood are developed to address these challenges. A pine wood chip is carbonized and asymmetrically loaded with a hydrophilic active material to achieve the creation of a wood‐derived cathode that integrates the active material, current collector, and continuously oriented three‐phase reaction interfacial channels, which allows the reaction dynamics to be accelerated. Consequently, the assembled quasi‐solid‐state hybrid battery performs an extra charge–discharge process beyond that performed by a typical nickel (Ni)–Zn battery, resulting in a wide operating voltage range of 0.6–2.0 V and a superior specific capacity of 656.5 mAh g –1 , in addition to an excellent energy density (644.7 Wh kg –1 ) and good durability. The ≈370% capacity improvement relative to the Ni–Zn battery alone makes the hybrid battery one of the best‐performing alkaline Zn batteries.

    Abstract: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a progressive cardiopulmonary disease with a high mortality rate. Although growing evidence has revealed the importance of dysregulated energetic metabolism in the pathogenesis of PH, the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms are not fully understood. In this study, we focused on ME1 (malic enzyme 1), a key enzyme linking glycolysis to the tricarboxylic acid cycle. We aimed to determine the role and mechanistic action of ME1 in PH. METHODS: Global and endothelial-specific ME1 knockout mice were used to investigate the role of ME1 in hypoxia- and SU5416/hypoxia (SuHx)–induced PH. Small hairpin RNA and ME1 enzymatic inhibitor (ME1*) were used to study the mechanism of ME1 in pulmonary artery endothelial cells. Downstream key metabolic pathways and mediators of ME1 were identified by metabolomics analysis in vivo and ME1-mediated energetic alterations were examined by Seahorse metabolic analysis in vitro. The pharmacological effect of ME1* on PH treatment was evaluated in PH animal models induced by SuHx. RESULTS: We found that ME1 protein level and enzymatic activity were highly elevated in lung tissues of patients and mice with PH, primarily in vascular endothelial cells. Global knockout of ME1 protected mice from developing hypoxia- or SuHx-induced PH. Endothelial-specific ME1 deletion similarly attenuated pulmonary vascular remodeling and PH development in mice, suggesting a critical role of endothelial ME1 in PH. Mechanistic studies revealed that ME1 inhibition promoted downstream adenosine production and activated A 2A R-mediated adenosine signaling, which leads to an increase in nitric oxide generation and a decrease in proinflammatory molecule expression in endothelial cells. ME1 inhibition activated adenosine production in an ATP-dependent manner through regulating malate-aspartate NADH (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide plus hydrogen) shuttle and thereby balancing oxidative phosphorylation and glycolysis. Pharmacological inactivation of ME1 attenuated the progression of PH in both preventive and therapeutic settings by promoting adenosine production in vivo. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicate that ME1 upregulation in endothelial cells plays a causative role in PH development by negatively regulating adenosine production and subsequently dysregulating endothelial functions. Our findings also suggest that ME1 may represent as a novel pharmacological target for upregulating protective adenosine signaling in PH therapy.

    Abstract: Non-diabetic coronary artery disease (CAD) patients are thought to encounter metabolic dysfunction and while these changes may be imperceptible to the patient they probably influence outcomes. At present, there is no system to support patients sensing these subtle changes, nor is there an established model for prognoses. The Atherogenic Index of Plasma (AIP) index has already proven useful for atherosclerosis although further research is needed, especially for those without hyperglycemia. Methods This is a prospective study of 5538 non-diabetic CAD patients who had received percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Participants were assigned to one of three groups according to their AIP index. High AIP index cases were then compared to low index patients according to major adverse cardiac events (MACE). Restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis was also conducted to investigate interrelations between AIP index levels and hazard ratios (HR) for MACEs. Results Patients with a high AIP index encountered metabolic dysfunction compared to those with a low AIP index i.e., higher Body Mass Index (BMI), Total Cholesterol (TC), Triglycerides (TG), and uric acid as well as lower HDL-C. Each of the aforementioned interrelations were significant with p values of less than 0.001. There was also a significant increase in the number of MACEs in the high AIP index group compared to the low AIP index group (HR: 1.37, 95% CI 1.04–1.81; p  = 0.025). A J-shaped RCS curve highlighted a change in the HR after the 0.18 juncture (HR per SD: 1.20, 95% CI 0.96–1.50). Further subgroup analysis supported the main findings, all with HRs greater than one. Conclusion The AIP index could be used in prognostics for non-diabetic CAD patients 2 years after PCI. The relationship between hazard ratio and the AIP index appears to be J-shaped. Although, further multi-center studies designed for non-diabetic patients with potential metabolic dysfunction should be conducted to determine the value of the AIP index.

    Abstract: Allicin is a sulfur‐containing compound extracted from raw garlic ( Allium sativum L .). We compared the effect of allicin addition on growth performance, serum biochemical parameters, and rumen microbiota of goats compared to monensin. Twenty‐four Anhui white goats were assigned randomly to one of three dietary treatments: 1) a basal diet (CON); 2) the basal diet with allicin addition at 750 mg per head per day (AC); 3) the basal diet with monensin addition at 30 mg per kg of diet (MS). Animals were fed for 8 weeks. Results showed the average daily gain, and feed efficiency was increased with allicin and monensin addition. Serum levels of IgG, total superoxide dismutase, and glutathione peroxidase were higher in the AC group than those in the CON and MS groups. The microbiota analysis revealed that monensin addition mainly affected genera related to carbohydrate and protein metabolism, and allicin mainly affected genera related to energy metabolism and intestinal health. In conclusion, allicin could improve growth performance and have advantages over monensin in improving the antioxidant capacity and immune function of goats. Allicin may be a potential alternative to monensin.

    Abstract: To explore the efficacy of diffuse magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for identifying clinicopathological changes in immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN) patients. Methods The study enrolled IgAN patients and healthy volunteers. IgAN patients were divided into group 1 (eGFR ≥ 90 ml/min/1.73m2), group 2 (60 ≤ eGFR & lt; 90 ml/min/1.73m2), and group 3 (eGFR & lt; 60 ml/min/1.73m2). Intravoxel incoherent motion diffusion-weighted imaging (IVIM-DWI) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) were performed via 3.0 T magnetic resonance. Diffuse MRI, clinical, and pathological indicators were collected and analyzed. P  & lt; 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results Forty-six IgAN patients and twenty-seven volunteers were enrolled. The apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), diffusion coefficient (D), perfusion fraction (f), and fractional anisotropy (FA) were significantly different among IgAN subgroups and controls. These parameters were positively correlated with eGFR and negatively with creatinine, and inversely correlated with glomerular sclerosis, interstitial fibrosis, and tubular atrophy (all P  & lt; 0.05). They had significantly high area under the curve (AUC) for distinguishing IgAN patients from controls, while FA had the highest AUC in identifying Group 1 IgAN patients from volunteers. Conclusions DTI and IVIM-DWI had the advantage of evaluating clinical and pathological changes in IgAN patients. DTI was superior at distinguishing early IgAN patients and might be a noninvasive marker for screening early IgAN patients from healthy individuals. Advances in knowledge DTI and IVIM-DWI could evaluate clinical and pathological changes and correlated with Oxford classification in IgAN patients. They could also identify IgAN patients from healthy populations, while DTI had superiority in differentiating early IgAN patients.
