Abstract: One of the obstacles of agriculture practiced in soil of low fertility is soil acidity and generally involves manganese toxicity in plants. The development of cultivars tolerant to Mn would be beneficial to farmers due to reduction in use of liming and consequently reduction in the cost of production. With this objective a preliminary experiment was conducted in nutrient solution which showed that the breeding line was highly tolerant to Mn. This breeding line originated from the cultivar IAC-Foscarin 31. Both the genotypes were planted in a pot experiment conducted in the greenhouse, in a Red Dusky Latosol soil with high Mn concentration. The results showed that the genotype tolerant had a vigorous vegetative growth attaining a height three times that of the normal genotype and without symptoms of Mn toxicity in the leaves and with roots showing normal colour with nodules. The normal genotype (IAC-Foscarin 31) showed dwarf plants with thick stems and crinkled leaves, typical of Mn toxicity symptoms. The taproot and some secundary roots showed dark coloration showing necroses of the tissue due to Mn toxicity. The concentration of Mn in the above ground parts and roots contained 33 and 15% more concentration than the normal genotype and the quantity of Mn absorbed was also 60 and 46% more than IAC-Foscarin 31 showing that the soybean breeding line is extremely tolerant to high Mn content in the plants.

Abstract: Boron deficiency is not usual in soybean crop in Brazil. The observation reported in this article occurred at Guaíra, State of Sao Paulo, Brazil on a low flat excessively limed and high in organic matter land. The soil boron content in the areas with plant deficiency was 0.06 ppm while in the areas of apparently healthy plants the soil boron content was 0.11 ppm extracted with boiling water. The leaf concentration for deficient and healthy plants was 10 and 19 ppm respectively. Primary leaves of deficient plants were leathery and thick and there was death of the apical buds. There were few flower formation and pod setting. The boron deficient plants were dwarf with thick stems creating difficulty at harvest and soybean yield was considerably reduced.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of Mg in the absorption of Mn and Zn in four soybean cultivars. Excised roots were used in the assays of absorption kinetics. The roots were placed in solutions with the following combinations: three concentrations of Mg (1.0, 3.0 and 6.0 mmol L-1) x five concentrations of Zn or Mn (0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 5.0 and 10.0 mumol L-1), with three replicates. To each of these solutions 14.8 MBq of radiozinc or radiomanganese was pipetted. After one hour of exposure, the roots were washed, ovendried, weighted, and the absorbed radioactivity determined. The obtained values were converted to micromoles per gram of dry matter. The Km and Vmax estimated values were determined by the Lineweaver & Burk transformation. The soybean cultivars showed an effect of noncompetitive inhibition between Mg and Zn and between Mg and Mn. The cultivars had distinct behavior in absorption of Mg, Mn and Zn. The Km and Vmax values were mutually independent in the absorption process of roots.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the direct and residual effects of sewage sludge soil application, as a source of phosphorus, on soybean yield, on grain quality for human consumption, and the potential of NO3- leaching. The experiment was carried out in the field, and the following treatments were compared: absence of chemical fertilization and sewage sludge; complete chemical fertilization; inoculated soybean plus dose 0 of sludge; inoculated soybean plus 1.5 t ha-1 of sewage sludge; inoculated soybean plus 3 t ha-1 of sewage sludge; inoculated soybean plus 6 t ha-1 of sewage sludge; and inoculated soybean plus chemical fertilization, except nitrogen. The highest sewage sludge doses resulted in highest soybean yield, in the first and second year. Contents of several elements in soybean grains, under sewage sludge treatments, were not significantly different from those obtained in the control and chemical fertilization treatments. Losses of NO3- to the environment may occur, mainly in the beginning of crop growth cycle.

Abstract: Among the various factors that contribute to high yields in agriculture, the good development of root system is considered one of the most important. In this research, the cause of soybeans root system growth variation was investigated. Soybeans sowing was made in two adjacent areas in the same type of the soil. In one of the areas, a no tillage system was used following Crotalaria juncea crop. In another area, the conventional management of soil was used. The variables analyzed showed that. 1) using the conventional management, the soil fertility starting from 10 cm layer to the depth of 120 cm showed adequate conditions for plant growth; 2) the concentrations of P, K and Ca of the aboveground parts of soybeans cultivated in the seven layers of the two soil profiles also confirm the better growth conditions under conventional management; 3) the area where C. juncea was planted and followed by soybeans in the no tillage management, showed hardness of the soil when compared with the conventional system. This result indicates a compactness of the soil at different layers; 4) in spite of the unfavourable conditions for the development of the root system, in the area where no tillage system was used, soybeans roots penetrated deeper than 1.2 m with nodules distributed along the profile. This was not observed in the conventional system of soil management. A probable explanation is that the vigorous taproot of C. juncea which penetrated the soil after its decomposition left the space to be filled up by the root system of the soybeans.

Abstract: During the period of 1981/82 to 1988/89 at Ribeirão Preto and 1981/82 to 1990/91 at Mococa, São Paulo State, Brazil, rotation systems were studied, with corn, cotton and soybeans using the following scheme: I - annual rotation of cotton, corn and soybeans; II - two years of cotton and one year of soybeans; III - two years of corn and one year of soybeans; IV - two years of soybeans and one year of corn; V - two years of soybeans and one year of cotton; and the monoculture of corn, cotton and soybeans. The results showed that at the two localities there was an increase in the yield of corn whatever the scheme of rotation utilized. On the other hand, for both cotton and soybeans no significant increase in the yield was observed with rotations.

Abstract: During the year 1986/87, experiments were conducted at the Experiment Stations of Mococa and Ribeirão Preto in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. The objective was to evaluate the effect of four rates of lime (0, 4, 8 and 12t/ha) on the concentrations of oil and protein in the seeds of the following soybean cultivars: IAC-Foscarin-31, IAC-11, IAC-12, and Cristalina. The maturity group varied from 130 to 160 days. The results showed that highest concentration of oil and protein was observed in seeds harvested at Mococa. Independently of liming and locality the cultivar IAC-12 presented the highest average production of oil and protein per area (561 and 963kg/ha, respectively). In both experiments, addition of lime resulted in raise of seed protein but in consistent decrease of seed oil for all cultivars. The quantity of oil and protein per area increased linearly with the increase in the rates of lime. This occurred as a result of the increase in seed yield after reducing soil acidity.
