Abstract: Animals that are well-managed thrive and produce better than those kept under conditions which do not take full consideration of their behavioural and welfare needs. This experiment was conducted with one hundred and eighty unsexed one day-old Marshall and Arbor Acre breeds of broiler chickens to investigate the effects of housing systems on behavioural assessment, bone morphometry and faecal egg counts. The birds were brooded for three weeks and acclimatized for one week in their respective housing systems. Each of the housing systems (deep litter and outdoor run) was allotted 90 birds with 45 chicks per breed in three replicates of 15 birds each after balancing for body weights. The birds were fed same quality and quantity of feed and water ad libitum throughout the period of the experiment which lasted for four weeks. Data were collected on behavioural observations, bone morphometry and faecal samples were analyzed to determine the helminthes egg per gram. The experiment was arranged in a 2 x 2 factorial layout in a completely randomized design. The results of behavioural assessment showed that the two breeds of broiler chickens expressed more (p 〈 0.05) of their natural instincts in the outdoor run compared with their counterparts on deep litter housing system. Irrespective of breeds, birds reared on outdoor run had higher (p 〈 0.05) bone strength (14.61N/mm2) compared with those on deep litter (10.68N/mm 2). Also, the result of faecal egg counts showed that broiler chickens reared on deep litter had a higher incidence of intestinal helminthes compared with those managed on outdoor run. It was concluded that outdoor run could be adopted to enhance more expression of natural behaviours, better bone strength and reduced incidence of intestinal helminthes in Marshall and Arbor Acre breeds of broiler chickens.

Abstract: This study evaluated The association of breed, sex, age and location of herd/flock (Village. peri-urban and sales point) with prevalence and distribution of ticks in sheep and goats in Abeokuta and its environs, A total of 300 sheep and 300 goats were randomly selected from the three locations. The estimated age, sex, and breeds of each animal were determined. Thereafter, they were examined for presence of ticks, Ticks were collected into universal bottles containing 1% formaldehyde The type, location and load on each animal were also recorded. The ticks were identified up to species level. Data on the animals, management factors and the prevalence of tick were processed into contingency tables to establish the association between the prevalence of tick and the age, sex, breed, and location using Chi-square (X) test statistics. Rhipicephalus evertsi and Boophilus spp were the tick species observed in the sheep. There were significant associations (P 〈 0.05) of prevalence of ticks, with age and location of goats, and breeds and location of sheep, respectively. It was thus concluded that animal factors of age, breed and location were significantly associated with tick infestation in sheep and goats. West African Dwarf (WAD) and O'uda breeds of sheep exhibited various levels of tick infestation while most of the Yankassa were tick-free. Tick infestation was more common with sheep of the sales point and village locations. It was therefore recommended that effective tick control measures should be instituted to prevent adverse effects of these parasites on the health and production of these animals.

Abstract: The efficacy of diminazene aceturate in three Nigerian breeds of sheep [West African Dwarf (WAD), Yankassa and Ouda] experimentally infected with Trypanosoma vivax was studied. Five rams of each breed were administered 0.5 ml of goat blood containing 2.5 × 10 6 T. vivax per millilitre intravenously, while three rams of each breed served as uninfected controls. The treatment with diminazene aceturate was intramuscularly administered to the infected sheep, when their packed cell volume (PCV) fell to 15 %, at a dosage of 7 mg.kg −1 b. w. The parameters measured were parasitaemia, live weight gain and PCV. By 24 hours post treatment (pt.), no trypanosomes were detected by either the Haematocrit Concentration Technique (HCT) or the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) in the blood of any of the treated sheep. However, a relapse of parasitaemia occurred 17 to 32 days pt. in 46.7 % of the treated rams and these were retreated with 14 mg.kg −1 b. w. diminazene aceturate. There were gradual increments in the live weight gain and the PCV of the treated rams until the resurgence of parasitaemia. Ouda had the highest cases of relapse (80 %), the least mean live weight gain and was the only breed in which mortality was recorded despite the treatment. In conclusion, diminazene aceturate administered at 7 mg.kg −1 b. w. cleared the trypanosomes in the blood of all the treated sheep within 24 hours and this was accompanied by the restoration of lost weight and the reversal of anaemia. However, the subsequent resurgence of parasitaemia indicated that a dosage of 7 mg.kg −1 b. w. was no longer reliable for complete elimination of trypanosomes from all the tissues of the host.

Abstract: Electrocardiograph during anaesthesia provides information on cardiac electrical activity which may affect cardiac function. This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of prolonged volatile anaesthesia using halothane and isoflurane on the electrographic and anaesthetic profiles in Nigerian dogs. They were prepared for anaesthesia and connected to a 5-lead patient monitor (GMI®). Venous access was secured and lactated ringer's solution administered at a maintenance flow rate of 5mlkghr-1.Tracheae were intubated following induction with thiopentone and anaesthesia maintained with 0.5% halothane (group A) and 2.0% isoflurane (group B) in 2liters/minute oxygen respectively with the animals breathing spontaneously. The readings were taken, prior to induction of anaesthesia (control) and every 30 minutes thereafter for six hours during anaesthesia. Data were presented as mean and standard deviation.Differences were considered significant at p≤0.05. The values of ST segment (sec) and P-waves (sec) were both low, 0.068 ± 0.013 and 0.064 ± 0.017 and 0.020 ± 0.001 and 0.020 ± 0.001 respectively for isoflurane and halothane. However the values of P-waves (mV) and P-R intervals (sec) were significantly higher in group A, (0.193 ±0.136 and 0.046 ±0.01) compared to group B, 0.193 ± 0.98 and 0.039 ± 0.01 respectively. Isoflurane produced prolongation of Q-T intervals (sec) and QRS complex (sec), 0.123 ± 0.018 and 0.023 ± 0.008 compared to halothane, 0.121 ± 0.023 and 0.021 ± 0.005. The ECG parameters measured revealed no adverse effect of halothane or isoflurane on the heart in Nigerian local dogs. There was prolonged QT interval in group B. In conclusion, halothane appears a better drug of choice in prolonged anaesthesia in Nigerian dogs.

Abstract: A comparative immunogenicity and efficacy study of local and imported infectious bursal disease (IBD) vaccines administered to chicks (cockerels) at varying regimes (10 and 18, 10 and 28, 14 and 35 days of age) was carried out. The test birds were challenged seven days after the booster dose of the IBD vaccine by administering six drops of 20% suspension of infected Bursa of Fabricius homogenate in saline intraocularly. The results showed that the control (unvaccinated) birds as well as those that were vaccinated on the 14 and 35" days of life showed signs of IBD and up to 80% of the birds in these two categories died two days post-challenge. The birds that were vaccinated on the 10% and 18and 10and 28 days of life were apparently protected from clinical infection as there was no morbidity or mortality among them as a result of the IBD virus challenge. The results of the study suggest that both local and imported vaccines are immunogenic and vaccination of chicks on the 10h and 184 and 10h and 28 days of life is effective and protective.

Abstract: A White Fulani cow whose record reveals three-year old, weighing about 350kg belonging to DUFARMS of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta was presented with a swelling on the left flank. Clinical evaluation of the animal revealed the following: rectal temperature, 38.2oC, heart rate, 60bpm and respiratory rate, 35bpm. A rectangular shaped mass, soft and warm to touch was palpated on the left flank. Pus was aspirated from the swelling with a sterile needle and syringe, and taken for biogram. Staphylococcus aureus was isolated from the aspirate which was sensitive to antibiotic, enrofloxacin, ciprofloxacin and gentamycin (Table 1). Total surgical extirpation of the encapsulated abscess was carried out aseptically under sedation and local anaesthesia and managed chemotherapeutically using antimicrobial, analgesic, anti-inflammatory agents post operatively.

Abstract: Saltwater intrusion into the coastal aquifer has long been recognized as a major threat to groundwater quality around the world. Groundwater evaluation of salt water intrusions in Igbokoda coastal area, southwestern Nigeria was carried out employing combined Horizontal Profiling and Vertical electrical sounding. Two traverses each with two sounding points were occupied. The result from the survey revealed 4 to 5 major layers comprising the unconsolidated silty sand and sandy clay (overburden), clayey zone, consolidated sand zone, partly intruded salt water intruded sandy clay zone and salt water intruded clay zone. The curves were the complex types KQH, KHA, QH and HKH curves. The overburden has resistivity that ranged from 253 to 1316.7Ω-m, thickness that ranged from 0.2 m to 7m. The clayey zone had resistivity of 846.0 Ω-m and thickness of 4m. The consolidated sand zone had resistivity that ranged from 2848.7 to 2865.7Ω-m and thickness that ranged between 4 and 21m. The partly intruded salt water zone is characterized by resistivity that varies between 18.4Ω-m and 93.0Ω-m and thickness of about 7-25m. The salt water intruded zone is characterized by resistivity that ranges between 4.1Ω-m and 9.7Ω-m and thickness of 4-48m. The partly-salt water intruded zones and salt water intruded zone were characterized with low resistivity while the high resistivity zones of consolidated sand layer constitute fresh water bearing zone that could serve as boreholes in the study area.

Abstract: A three and a half year old N'dama cow weighing about 150kg was rescued from a steel jaw trap during grazing the previous day and presented at the Teaching and Research Farm Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Nigeria with a fresh, deep wound. The animal was treated but there were no satisfactory response to Penicillin/streptomycin intramuscular injection at 10,0001U/kg for seven days and also i/m 20% Oxytetracycline injection at 20mg/kg repeated after 48 hours. A loopful of pus samples aseptically taken from the wound were streaked on blood agar base enriched with 7% horse blood (Oxoid, UK) using the quadrant streaking method and incubated aerobically at 37°C for 24-48 hours. Aeromonas hydrophila was isolated which was resistant to the commonly used antibiotics on the farm. Following the results obtained from the sensitivity test, the animal was placed on Enrofloxacin for seven days, the swelling regressed, no pus was expressed from the wound site and no pain was elicited from the joint on application of pressure by the 8th day Aeromonas hydrophila is pathogenic to man; hence care should be taken in handling of animal traps.
