Abstract: Due to its complex geological history and the emergence of various biogeographic regions, the Philippines boasts an extraordinary array of flora and fauna. This unique combination has contributed to the country’s exceptional density of terrestrial species, making it amongst the highest in the world. Mindanao, in the southern part of the Philippines, is the second largest group of islands and supports high levels of endemism and proportion of threatened species. However, consolidated biodiversity records and information remain unavailable for the region. The primary goal of the Mindanao Open Biodiversity Information (MOBIOS + ) database is to address these substantial data deficiencies by compiling contemporary biodiversity information from the 21 st century. This initiative seeks to enhance our comprehension of biodiversity trends in Mindanao over temporal and spatial dimensions, while also creating an openly-accessible database. The database we present here is the first of its kind and currently the most comprehensive attempt to establish the largest consolidated database for Mindanao biodiversity, based on publicly available literature. With its vast collection of biodiversity data, this database will prove to be a valuable resource for advancing biodiversity research and analysis. It will further facilitate the identification of species and areas that require immediate conservation prioritisation and action, addressing the urgent challenges posed by our rapidly changing planet. The MOBIOS + database is the first attempt to create a massive FAIR database aiming to collate biodiversity records from published literature in the Mindanao faunal region, south of the Philippines. The database currently includes 12,813 georeferenced specimen occurrences representing 1,907 unique taxa across 10 animal classes inhabiting the terrestrial and freshwater environments of Mindanao faunal region. We made all georeferenced specimen occurrences available in the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) platform.

Abstract: Non-heterocystous nitrogen fixing strains of cyanobacteria were screened by their ability to grow in nitrogen deficient media. The selected nitrogen fixing cyanobacterial cells were then cultured in BG11 media supplemented with [15N]-labeled sodium nitrate. Under these growth conditions any organic [14N] found in the cyanobacterial cells would simply come from nitrogen fixation because [15N] was the only available source of nitrogen in the medium. Amino acids extracted after different time periods (after 15, 30, 40, 50 and 60 days of inoculation) were used for the determination of the 14N/15N ratio using GC-MS. Results from the present study support the conclusion that at stationary phase of growth cyanobacterial nitrogen fixation was no longer supplying a significant amount of nitrogen. This approach not only provided a detailed method for the evaluation of the nitrogen fixing potential of the cyanobacteria in culture, but also suggests novel approaches for the assessment of the ability of the strains to provide nitrogen enrichment to plants under co-cultivation conditions.

Abstract: In this study, the fragmentation as postmodernist narrative technique in Mohsin Hamid’s novel “How to get filthy rich in rising Asia” is examined. He uses structural inequalities, grammatically incorrect sentences, phrases and dependent clauses. The term fragmentation is coined by Bell Hooks to highlight the problem of “hierarchy of oppression” within the feminist paradigm. Fragmentation is the major thematic concern of postmodern art that sets new parameters for the narrative techniques of postmodern literature. Fragmentation in the literary work involves complexity on semantic level where the various words act as signifier and signified at the same time. Therefore, this study probes the fundamentals of fragmentation in the text that reflects the radical changes in the postmodern society and focuses on the little narratives that create fragmented truth and cause anarchy, uncertainty and chaos in the world.

Abstract: The primary objective of this study was to assess the potential utility of quince seed mucilage as an excipient within a graft copolymer for the development of an oral-controlled drug delivery system. The Cydonia oblonga-mucilage-based graft copolymer was synthesized via a free radical polymerization method, employing potassium per sulfate (KPS) as the initiator and N, N-methylene bisacrylamide (MBA) as the crosslinker. Various concentrations of monomers, namely acrylic acid (AA) and methacrylic acid (MAA), were used in the graft copolymerization process. Metoprolol tartarate was then incorporated into this graft copolymer matrix, and the resultant drug delivery system was subjected to comprehensive characterization using techniques such as Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The swelling behavior of the drug delivery system was evaluated under different pH conditions, and in vitro drug release studies were conducted. Furthermore, pharmacokinetic parameters including the area under the curve (AUC), maximum plasma concentration (Cmax), time to reach Cmax (Tmax), and half-life (t1/2) were determined for metoprolol-loaded hydrogel formulations in rabbit plasma, and these results were compared with those obtained from a commercially available product. The key findings from the study include observations that higher concentrations of acrylic acid (AA) and Cydonia oblonga mucilage (CM) in the graft copolymer enhanced swelling, while the opposite trend was noted at elevated concentrations of methacrylic acid (MAA) and N, N-methylene bisacrylamide (MBA). FTIR analysis confirmed the formation of the graft copolymer and established the compatibility between the drug and the polymer. SEM imaging revealed a porous structure in the prepared formulations. Additionally, the swelling behavior and drug release profiles indicated a pH-sensitive pattern. The pharmacokinetic assessment revealed sustained release patterns of metoprolol from the hydrogel network system. Notably, the drug-loaded formulation exhibited a higher Cmax (156.48 ng/mL) compared to the marketed metoprolol product (96 ng/mL), and the AUC of the hydrogel-loaded metoprolol was 2.3 times greater than that of the marketed formulation. In conclusion, this study underscores the potential of quince seed mucilage as an intelligent material for graft-copolymer-based oral-controlled release drug delivery systems.

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to address double stratification and activation energy in flow of tangent hyperbolic fluid. Flow is induced by non-linear stretching sheet of variable thickness. Heat flux by Cattaneo–Christov theory is implemented. Design/methodology/approach Non-linear system is computed for the convergent solutions. Attention is particularly focused to the velocity, temperature and concentration. Findings It is found that temperature and thermal layer thickness are decreased for larger stratification. Originality/value In view of aforementioned communication, the aim of the present study is fourfold: First, to inspect stagnation point flow of tangent hyperbolic liquid by a stretched sheet; second, to discuss effect of non-Fourier heat flux and double stratification; third, to investigate activation energy; and fourth, to examine variable thickness effect.

Abstract: Stream of consciousness is a psychological theory which is presented by Professor William James in his book "The Principles of Psychology". Stream of consciousness is a continuous flow of sense-perceptions, thoughts, feelings, and memories in the human mind. This term is reserved for indicating an approach to the presentation of psychological aspects of character in fiction. In Urdu fiction, Syed Sajjad Zaheer first used this technique in his novel "London ki Aik Raat" very well.

Abstract: Objectives: Patients with psoriasis have higher prevalence of associated medical disorders including psoriatic arthritis, obesity, diabetes, dyslipidemia, thyroid abnormalities and cardiovascular disease. The rationale of current study was to determine prevalence of associated medical co-morbid conditions in psoriasis cases. Study Design: Descriptive cross sectional study. Setting: Dermatology Clinic, Bahawalpur Victoria Hospital. Period: January to July 2015. Material & Methods: Informed consent was obtained from 117 adult patients ( 〉 18 years) of both the genders diagnosed with psoriasis for 〉 3 months. Patients with chronic renal failure, chronic liver disease, erythroderma, chromosomal abnormality syndromes and pregnant females were excluded. Blood pressure and body mass index; i.e. BMI=weight (kg)/ height (m2) were documented. Fasting blood sugars, HbA1c, lipid profile and electrocardiogram was done. Results: Mean age was 41.94±11.60 years. Among 117 cases, 66(56.41%) were males and 51(43.59%) were females; male to female ratio was 1.3:1. Diabetes mellitus was found in 53(45.30%), hypertension in 21(17.95%), obesity in 29(24.79%), ischemic heart disease in 62(52.99%) and dyslipidemia in 22(18.80%) patients. Conclusion: Current study concludes that patients with psoriasis have higher prevalence of ischemic heart disease and diabetes mellitus followed by obesity, dyslipidemia and hypertension. It is suggested that psoriasis cases presenting to dermatology department should be assessed for these co-morbid conditions for early diagnosis and management of these conditions.
