    Abstract: Abstract. Teluk Bakau Village is one of the largest conservation areas of seagrass ecosystem located in Bintan Island. This research aim to study the distribution of species, seagrass coverage and seagrass density in Teluk Bakau Village. The research was conducted at two stations, Beralas Pasir Island and Teluk Bakau Village Beach. Seagrass data collections are computed using transect quadrat method. The results of this study show that there is total 8 species of seagrasses found in the conservation area of seagrass ecosystem in Teluk Bakau, namelu Enhalus acoroides, Thalassia hemprichii, Cymodocea rotundata, Cymodocea serulata, Halophila ovalis, Halophila minor, Syringodium isoetifolium and Halodule uninervis. The highest seagrass cover value was found at Beralas Pasir Island station about 47%, while in Teluk Bakau Village Beach station the seagrass coverage value was arround 29%. Based on these coverage value, the seagrass ecosystem in Teluk Bakau area fall in the category of medium conditon. The excistence of seagrass ecosystem in Teluk Bakau village is utilized by the community in small scale fisheries activity, therefore it is utmost important that its biodiversity and level of coverage are maintaned or even improved.Keywords: Bintan, conservation, coverage, seagrass, teluk bakau Abstrak. Desa Teluk Bakau merupakan salah satu kawasan konservasi ekosistem padang lamun yang terletak di Pulau Bintan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji sebaran spesies, tutupan dan kerapatan lamun di Desa Teluk Bakau. Metode pengamatan ekosistem padang lamun dengan menggunakan metode transek kuadrat. Penelitian dilakukan di dua stasiun yaitu Pantai Timur Teluk Bakau dan Pulau Beralas Pasir. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa total terdapat 8 spesies lamun yang ditemukan di kawasan konservasi ekosistem padang lamun di Teluk Bakau, meliputi spesies Enhalus acoroides, Thalassia hemprichii, Cymodocea rotundata, Cymodocea serulata, Halophila ovalis, Halophila minor, Syringodium isoetifolium dan Halodule uninervis. Nilai tutupan lamun tertinggi ditemukan di stasiun Pulau Beralas Pasir sebesar 47% dan stasiun Pantai Desa Teluk Bakau memiliki nilai tutupan lamun sebesar 29%. Berdasarkan nilai tutupannya ekosistem padang lamun di kawasan Teluk Bakau berada dalam kondisi sedang. Keberadaan ekosistem lamun di Desa Teluk Bakau dimanfaatkan oleh masyarakat dalam aktivitas perikanan skala kecil, sehingga sangat penting untuk menjaga keberagaman dan nilai tutupan ekosistem lamun.Kata Kunci: Bintan, konservasi, lamun, Teluk Bakau, tutupan

Morphometric and DNA Barcoding of endemic Halmaheran walking shark (Hemiscyllium halmahera, Allen, 2013) in North Maluku, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 3331-3343. The walking shark (Hemiscyllium halmahera) commonly referred to as bamboo shark, is a shark species that belongs to the Hemiscyllidae family which is endemic in North Maluku, and Indonesian waters. These Hemiscyllium species are generally confined to the Australian-New Guinea region, save a specie which originates from Halmahera, an Indonesian island. Ever since its discovery, sufficient information on its existence has been largely unavailable. Hence, the purpose of this study is (1) to assess the morphology, using meristic measurements and length-weight relationship, and (2) to determine the molecular characteristics through DNA barcoding, phylogenetic reconstruction, and genetic diversity. The samples used in this research were obtained from Halmahera Archipelago, North Maluku, including Halmahera, Tidore, Ternate, Maitara, and Guraici in several expeditions between March 2017 and January 2018. 36 individuals in total were measured for morphometric parameters including Total Length (TL), Standard Length (SL), Head Length (HL), Body Circumference (BC), and Body Weight (BW). Out of a total of 36 sharks, tissue samples were obtained from 32 individuals for molecular identification. After the required measurements were obtained, all individuals sharks were released back to their habitat safely. Equations of linear regression were used to analyze the relationship between length and weight. Morphometric measurements indicated that the average total length of the walking shark samples obtained, were not more than 75± cm for both male and female specimens. The length-weight analysis revealed a positive allometric growth pattern in H. halmahera species, where weight was gained faster than an increase in length. The results of the DNA fragment length analysis from all samples were 793-bp. All 32 tissue samples identified as H. halmahera consisted of 3 samples from Ternate Island, 14 samples from Maitara Island, 9 samples from Guraici Island (South Halmahera), 10 samples from Central Halmahera, and 2 samples from Tidore Island. These results confirmed that DNA subsequence analysis indicates that H. halmahera is different from those sequences extracted from Genbank in the Australia-New Guinea region. This study successfully identified H. halmahera based on their morphological and molecular characters, and has therefore contributed to international genetic database (Barcoding Of Life Database-BOLD) for further studies.

    Abstract: Environmental DNA (eDNA) methods are increasingly viewed as alternate or complementary approaches to conventional capture-based surveys for marine conservation and fisheries management purposes, especially at large spatial scales in mega-biodiversity regions such as Indonesia. Decapod crustacean distribution and diversity across Indonesia are still poorly known, even for economically important fisheries commodities. This study assessed coral reef associated decapod diversity and distribution by sampling 40 sites in three regions (West, Central, East), representing 17 provinces and 10 Fisheries Management Areas (FMAs) across Indonesia, with a special focus on the blue swimming crab Portunus pelagicus . DNA sequencing (Illumina iSeq100) data were analysed in mBRAVE (Multiplex Barcode Research And Visualization Environment) yielded 406 OTUs belonging to 32 families, with 47 genera and 51 species identified. The number of families identified was highest in the Central region (25), while the most genera (31) and species (36) were identified in the West region. Alpha diversity did not differ significantly between regions or provinces, while Beta diversity differed significantly between provinces but not between regions. Our results also showed 31 species are possibility native based on the distribution meanwhile 12 species do not appear to have been recorded based of SeaLifeBase or WorMS. While providing a reference for further exploration of Indonesian coastal and small island decapod biodiversity, the high proportion of unidentified taxa calls for concerted efforts to develop and maintain reference specimen and sequence repositories and expand species conservation status assessments. The economically important decapod crustaceans identified in this study included three crabs ( Charybdis anisodon, Charybdis japonica, Portunus pelagicus ), a freshwater prawn ( Macrobrachium nipponense ), a lobster ( Panulirus stimpsoni ) and two penaeid shrimps ( Mierspenaeopsis hardwickii and Trachysalambria aspera ). For most decapod taxa, observed patterns indicate management under existing provincial and/or FMA level management structures is appropriate. Furthermore, the data can inform science-based fisheries management strategies, in particular for P. pelagicus .

    Abstract: The frequency of algal bloom’s event has been increased in Jakarta Bay, recently. Most of the bloom events were tend to be reoccurred after the rainy season. The research was conducted from 2008 until 2015 to study the linkage of nutrients and the ratios on the growth of the phytoplankton population. Collecting samples were conducted using a canonical plankton net of 20 µm mesh size, 125 cm length and 30 cm diameter of the opening mouth. The results of the study showed that the concentration of phosphate in the waters ranged from 0.01-12.5 µg/l (average 4.58 µg/l) and nitrate ranged from 0.01-15.89 µg/l (average 0.72 µg/l). The N/P ratio during the study ranging from 0.2 up to 45.4. High ratios of nutrients were mostly recorded in 2010 where the overall abundance of phytoplankton is very high. There is a strong correlation of N/P ratio with the community structure or composition of the phytoplankton population. The variability of phytoplankton abundance appears to be related to nutrient ratios of nitrate and phosphate.

    Abstract: Abstract. Srimariana ES, Apituley DAN. 2019. Antioxidant activity of extracted green algae silpau (Dyctyosphaeria versluysii). Nusantara Bioscience 11: 153-156. Silpau (Dictyosphaeria versluysii) is a green algae that is widely available in Southwest Moluccas regency, living on coral reefs and not classified as seasonal plants. Silpau has long been used by local people, generally in the form of processed vegetables or colo-colo (traditional food). Except for its nutritional value, comprehensive information about silpau still unknown. Therefore, this study was carried out to determine its potential as an antioxidant. The phytochemical content of silpau was analyzed according to the standard method. The antioxidant activity of green algae silpau extract was carried out by reducing DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) free radicals. Phytochemical test of silpau revealed that silpau contain terpenoid compounds. The result of the study showed that the IC50 value of methanol extract of silpau was 547.97 ppm, indicated that silpau methanol extract categorized as a weak antioxidant.
