    Abstract: Many patients with acute ischemic stroke are not eligible for thrombolysis or mechanical reperfusion therapies due to contraindications, inaccessible vascular occlusions, late presentation, or large infarct core. Sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG) stimulation to enhance collateral flow and stabilize the blood-brain barrier offers an alternative, potentially more widely deliverable, therapy. Methods— In a randomized, sham-controlled, double-masked trial at 41 centers in 7 countries, patients with anterior circulation ischemic stroke not treated with reperfusion therapies within 24 hours of onset were randomly allocated to active SPG stimulation or sham control. The primary efficacy outcome was improvement beyond expectations on the modified Rankin Scale of global disability at 90 days (sliding dichotomy), assessed in the modified intention-to-treat population. The initial planned sample size was 660 patients, but the trial was stopped early when technical improvements in device placement occurred, so that analysis of accumulated experience could be conducted to inform a successor trial. Results— Among 303 enrolled patients, 253 received at least one active SPG or sham stimulation, constituting the modified intention-to-treat population (153 SPG stimulation and 100 sham control). Age was median 73 years (interquartile range, 64–79), 52.6% were female, deficit severity on the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale was median 11 (interquartile range, 9–15), and time from last known well median 18.6 hours (interquartile range, 14.5–22.5). For the primary outcome, improved 3-month disability beyond expectations, rates in the SPG versus sham treatment groups were 49.7% versus 40.0%; odds ratio, 1.48 (95% CI, 0.89–2.47); P =0.13. A significant treatment interaction with stroke location (cortical versus noncortical) was noted, P =0.04. In the 87 patients with confirmed cortical involvement, rates of improvement beyond expectations were 50.0% versus 27.0%; odds ratio, 2.70 (95% CI, 1.08–6.73); P =0.03. Similar response patterns were observed for all prespecified secondary efficacy outcomes. No differences in mortality or serious adverse event safety end points were observed. Conclusions— SPG stimulation within 24 hours of onset is safe in acute ischemic stroke. SPG stimulation was not shown to statistically significantly improve 3-month disability above expectations, though favorable outcomes were nominally higher with SPG stimulation. Beneficial effects may distinctively be conferred in patients with confirmed cortical involvement. The results of this study need to be confirmed in a larger pivotal study.     Abstract: Vascular regeneration is a complex process, additionally limited by the low regeneration potential of blood vessels. Hence, current research is focused on the design of artificial materials that combine biocompatibility with a certain rate of biodegradability and mechanical robustness. In this paper, we have introduced a scaffold material made of poly(L-lactide-co-glycolide)/poly(isosorbide sebacate) (PLGA/PISEB) fibers fabricated in the course of an electrospinning process, and confirmed its biocompatibility towards human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC). The resulting material was characterized by a bimodal distribution of fiber diameters, with the median of 1.25 µm and 4.75 µm. Genotyping of HUVEC cells collected after 48 h of incubations on the surface of PLGA/PISEB scaffolds showed a potentially pro-angiogenic expression profile, as well as anti-inflammatory effects of this material. Over the course of a 12-week-long hydrolytic degradation process, PLGA/PISEB fibers were found to swell and disintegrate, resulting in the formation of highly developed structures resembling seaweeds. It is expected that the change in the scaffold structure should have a positive effect on blood vessel regeneration, by allowing cells to penetrate the scaffold and grow within a 3D structure of PLGA/PISEB, as well as stabilizing newly-formed endothelium during hydrolytic expansion.

    Abstract: The use of algae is gaining popularity in recent years. Algae can form a suitable substrate for biogas production because they are low in cellulose and have low lignin content. The paper contains a summary with the list of the algae species applied for the biogas production process to this date, coupled with the description of the characteristic conditions in which the process is conducted. The key importance factors during the production of biogas include, among others, grade of algae species used, temperature of the process, mode in which the material is supplied into the tank, mixing method, use of co-substrate, etc. This paper reports the results of the study involving the effect of various temperature conditions on the characteristics of the growth rate of algal biomass. The research was performed for the Chlorella vulgaris BA-0167 strain in the temperature range corresponding to the mesophilic fermentation processes in anaerobic conditions.

    Abstract: Study aim : To check if the short rehabilitation treatment (3 weeks) complemented by complex rehabilitation on advanced equipment improves the functional status of chronic stroke patients; and which clinical and objective parameters can be used to assess the efficacy of such treatment. Material and methods : 28 patients 3 to 6 months after the stroke. They participated in 3 weeks rehabilitation program in Rehabilitation Hospital. This program was supplemented by rehabilitation on: Zebris treadmill, ALFA and GAMMA platform, Biodex Balance System SD, the Balance Tutor treadmill. Their functional status was assessed by: Scandinavian Stroke Scale (SSS), Timed-Up-And-Go test (TUG), balance tests on Zebris, instrumented gait analysis on BTS system. Results : The positive changes of the patients’ functional status were found in time of TUG test, in case of balance test for 95% of the ellipsoid area, lengths of major and minor axes of the ellipsoid, average sway speed, sway path length, total ground reaction force for left and right leg, and Gillette Gait Index in case of the gait analysis. Conclusions : The improvement of the functional status of chronic stroke patients after relatively short rehabilitation treatment was achieved, due to the addition to the standard rehabilitation treatment the program on the advanced technologically equipment.

    Abstract: This paper reports the results of research into air, water and oil flow through pipes filled with open-cell metal foams, which form a material with a considerable potential for application in the design of process equipment. This study applied three metal foams with various geometrical parameters. The objective of the experiments involved the measurement of pressure drop within a relatively large range of the variability of the flow conditions. On the basis of data from the literature and analysis of the results of experiments, an assessment was undertaken concerned with the influence of the geometrical parameters of the foams as well as velocities and fluid properties on the flow regime and pressure drop. The results demonstrate that the theory concerned with the fluid flow through porous media has a limited application with regard to metal foams due to the considerable turbulence of the flow through such foams. If flow occurs in other conditions than laminar regime, the permeability of metal foams is relative not only to the geometrical structure of the foams but also depends on the properties and velocity of the fluid. The present study demonstrated that the assessment of the flow regime can apply the modified Reynolds number in which the characteristics dimension is defined on the basis of the parameters accounting for the geometrical foam structure. Three flow regimes were distinguished – laminar flow, transient Forchheimer and transient Froud flow. The ranges corresponding to the occurrence of the particular flow regimes were subsequently determined.

    Abstract: The selection of dressing is crucial for the wound healing process. Traditional dressings protect against contamination and mechanical damage of an injured tissue. Alternatives for standard dressings are regenerating systems containing a polymer with an incorporated active compound. The aim of this research was to obtain a biodegradable wound dressing releasing propolis in a controlled manner throughout the healing process. Dressings were obtained by electrospinning a poly(lactide-co-glycolide) copolymer (PLGA) and propolis solution. The experiment consisted of in vitro drug release studies and in vivo macroscopic treatment evaluation. In in vitro studies released active compounds, the morphology of nonwovens, chemical composition changes of polymeric material during degradation process, weight loss and water absorption were determined. For in vivo research, four domestic pigs, were used. The 21-day experiment consisted of observation of healing third-degree burn wounds supplied with PLGA 85/15 nonwovens without active compound, with 5 wt % and 10 wt % of propolis, and wounds rinsed with NaCl. The in vitro experiment showed that controlling the molar ratio of lactidyl to glycolidyl units in the PLGA copolymer gives the opportunity to change the release profile of propolis from the nonwoven. The in vivo research showed that PLGA nonwovens with propolis may be a promising dressing material in the treatment of severe burn wounds.

    Abstract: The dynamic cross-talk between epididymal cells is hormonally regulated and, in part, through direct cell-to-cell interactions. To date, no information is available regarding possible impact of anti-androgens on the proteins involved in the gap junctional communication within the boar epididymis. Thus, a question arised whether prenatal or postnatal exposure to an anti-androgen flutamide alters the expression of gap junction protein - connexin43 (Cx43) and androgen receptor (AR) expression in the caput, corpus and cauda epididymis and leads to delayed effects on morphology and function of adult pig epididymis. Methods First two experimental groups received flutamide prenatally on gestational days 20-28 and 80-88 (GD20 and GD80) and further two groups were exposed to flutamide postanatally on days 2-10 and 90-98 after birth (PD2 and PD90). Epididymides were collected from adult boars. Routine histology was performed using hematoxylin-eosin staining. The expression of Cx43 and AR were analyzed using immunohistochemistry and Western blotting. Both analyses were supported by quantitative approaches to demonstrate the variations of the expression levels following the treatment. Apoptotic cells were identified using TUNEL assay. Results Histological examination revealed differences in epididymal morphology of flutamide-exposed boars when compared to controls. Scarce spermatic content were seen within the corpus and cauda lumina of GD20, PD2 and PD90 groups. Concomitantly, frequency of epididymal cell apoptosis was significantly higher ( p 〈 0.05) after exposure to flutamide at GD20. Moreover, in GD20, PD2, and PD90 groups, significantly lower AR expression ( p 〈 0.05) was found in the principal and basal cells of the corpus and cauda regions, while in the stromal cells AR expression was significantly reduced ( p 〈 0.05) along the epididymal duct. Concomitantly, a decrease in Cx43 expression ( p 〈 0.05) was noticed in the stromal cells of the cauda region of GD20 and PD2 groups. This indicates high sensitivity of the stromal cells to androgen withdrawal. Conclusions The region-specific alterations in the epididymis morphology and scarce spermatic content within the lumina of the corpus and cauda indicate that flutamide can induce delayed effects on the epididymal function of the adult boar by decrease in AR protein levels that results in altered androgen signaling. This may cause disturbances in androgen-dependent processes including Cx43 (de)regulation, however, we can not exclude the possibility that in response to flutamide decreased Cx43 expression may represent one mechanism responsible for functional disturbance of the boar epididymis.
