    Abstract: The prevalence of infectious diseases remains one of the major challenges faced by the Chinese health sector. Policymakers have a tremendous interest in investigating the spatiotemporal epidemiology of infectious diseases. We aimed to review the small-scale (city level, county level, or below) spatiotemporal epidemiology of notifiable infectious diseases in China through a systematic review, thus summarizing the evidence to facilitate more effective prevention and control of the diseases. Methods We searched four English language databases (PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science) and three Chinese databases (CNKI, WanFang, and SinoMed), for studies published between January 1, 2004 (the year in which China’s Internet-based disease reporting system was established) and December 31, 2021. Eligible works were small-scale spatial or spatiotemporal studies focusing on at least one notifiable infectious disease, with the entire territory of mainland China as the study area. Two independent reviewers completed the review process based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Results A total of 18,195 articles were identified, with 71 eligible for inclusion, focusing on 22 diseases. Thirty-one studies (43.66%) were analyzed using city-level data, 34 (47.89%) were analyzed using county-level data, and six (8.45%) used community or individual data. Approximately four-fifths (80.28%) of the studies visualized incidence using rate maps. Of these, 76.06% employed various spatial clustering methods to explore the spatial variations in the burden, with Moran’s I statistic being the most common. Of the studies, 40.85% explored risk factors, in which the geographically weighted regression model was the most commonly used method. Climate, socioeconomic factors, and population density were the three most considered factors. Conclusions Small-scale spatiotemporal epidemiology has been applied in studies on notifiable infectious diseases in China, involving spatiotemporal distribution and risk factors. Health authorities should improve prevention strategies and clarify the direction of future work in the field of infectious disease research in China.

    Abstract: China is the most populous country globally and has made significant achievements in the control of infectious diseases over the last decades. The 2003 SARS epidemic triggered the initiation of the China Information System for Disease Control and Prevention (CISDCP). Since then, numerous studies have investigated the epidemiological features and trends of individual infectious diseases in China; however, few considered the changing spatiotemporal trends and seasonality of these infectious diseases over time. Objective This study aims to systematically review the spatiotemporal trends and seasonal characteristics of class A and class B notifiable infectious diseases in China during 2005-2020. Methods We extracted the incidence and mortality data of 8 types (27 diseases) of notifiable infectious diseases from the CISDCP. We used the Mann-Kendall and Sen’s methods to investigate the diseases’ temporal trends, Moran I statistic for their geographical distribution, and circular distribution analysis for their seasonality. Results Between January 2005 and December 2020, 51,028,733 incident cases and 261,851 attributable deaths were recorded. Pertussis (P=.03), dengue fever (P=.01), brucellosis (P=.001), scarlet fever (P=.02), AIDS (P 〈 .001), syphilis (P 〈 .001), hepatitis C (P 〈 .001) and hepatitis E (P=.04) exhibited significant upward trends. Furthermore, measles (P 〈 .001), bacillary and amebic dysentery (P 〈 .001), malaria (P=.04), dengue fever (P=.006), brucellosis (P=.03), and tuberculosis (P=.003) exhibited significant seasonal patterns. We observed marked disease burden–related geographic disparities and heterogeneities. Notably, high-risk areas for various infectious diseases have remained relatively unchanged since 2005. In particular, hemorrhagic fever and brucellosis were largely concentrated in Northeast China; neonatal tetanus, typhoid and paratyphoid, Japanese encephalitis, leptospirosis, and AIDS in Southwest China; BAD in North China; schistosomiasis in Central China; anthrax, tuberculosis, and hepatitis A in Northwest China; rabies in South China; and gonorrhea in East China. However, the geographical distribution of syphilis, scarlet fever, and hepatitis E drifted from coastal to inland provinces during 2005-2020. Conclusions The overall infectious disease burden in China is declining; however, hepatitis C and E, bacterial infections, and sexually transmitted infections continue to multiply, many of which have spread from coastal to inland provinces

    Abstract: Maize bsd2 ( bundle sheath defective2 ) is a classical C 4 mutant with defective C 4 photosynthesis, accompanied with reduced accumulation of Rubisco (ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase oxygenase) and aberrant mature chloroplast morphology in the bundle sheath (BS) cells. However, as a hypothetical chloroplast chaperone, the effects of BSD2 on C 4 chloroplast development have not been fully examined yet, which precludes a full appreciation of BSD2 function in C 4 photosynthesis. The aims of our study are to find out the role of BSD2 in regulating chloroplasts development in maize leaves, and to add new insights into our understanding of C 4 biology. Results We found that at the chloroplast maturation stage, the thylakoid membranes of chloroplasts in the BS and mesophyll (M) cells became significantly looser, and the granaof chloroplasts in the M cells became thinner stacking in the bsd2 mutant when compared with the wildtype plant. Moreover, at the early chloroplast development stage, the number of dividing chloroplasts and the chloroplast division rate are both reduced in the bsd2 mutant, compared with wild type. Quantitative reverse transcriptase-PCR analysis revealed that the expression of both thylakoid formation-related genesand chloroplast division-related genes is significantly reduced in the bsd2 mutants. Further, we showed that BSD2 interacts physically with the large submit of Rubisco (LS) in Bimolecular Fluorescence Complementation assay. Conclusions Our combined results suggest that BSD2 plays an essential role in regulating the division and differentiation of the dimorphic BS and M chloroplasts, and that it acts at a post-transcriptional level to regulate LS stability or assembly of Rubisco.

    Abstract: Metasurfaces consisting of planar subwavelength structures with minimal thickness are appealing to emerging technologies such as integrated optics and photonic chips for their small footprint and compatibility with sophisticated planar nanofabrication techniques. However, reduced dimensionality due to the 2D nature of a metasurface poses challenges to the adaptation of a few useful methods that have found great success with conventional optics in 3D space. For instance, Bragg diffraction is the foundation of the well‐established technique of phase‐coded multiplexing in volume holography. It relies on interference among the scattered waves from multiple layers across the thickness of a sample. In this work, despite losing the dimension in thickness, a metasurface is devised to experimentally demonstrate phase‐coded multiplexing by replacing free‐space light with a surface wave in its output. The in‐plane interference along the propagation of the surface wave resembles the Bragg diffraction, thus enabling phase‐coded multiplexing in the 2D design. An example of code‐based all‐optical routing is also achieved by using a multiplexed metasurface, which can find applications in photonic data processing and communications.

    Abstract: Angiogenesis is considered as an important process in tumor growth, metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and associated with cancer progression, suggesting that an important research and development field of clinical molecular targeted drugs for HCC. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying tumor angiogenesis in HCC remains elusive. In the current study, we demonstrate that upregulation of AMYB proto-oncogene-like 1 (MYBL1) was associated with high endothelial vessel (EV) density and contributed to poor prognosis of HCC patient. Functionally, MYBL1 overexpressing enhanced the capacity of HCC cells to induce tube formation, migration of HUVECs, neovascularization in CAMs, finally, enhanced HCC cells metastasis, while silencing MYBL1 had the converse effect. Furthermore, HCC cells with high MYBL1 expression were more resistance to sorafenib treatment. We observed that CD31 staining was significantly increased in tumors formed by MYBL1-overexpressing cells but decreased in MYBL1-silenced tumors. Mechanistically, MYBL1 binds to the ANGPT2 promoter and transcriptionally upregulate ANGPT2 mRNA expression. Strikingly, treatment with monoclonal antibody against ANGPT2 significantly inhibited the growth of MYBL1-overexpressing tumors and efficiently impaired angiogenesis. Furthermore, the histone post-translational factors: protein arginine methyltransferase 5 (PRMT5), MEP50, and WDR5 were required for MYBL1-mediated ANGPT2 upregulation. Importantly, we confirmed the correlation between MYBL1 and ANGPT2 expression in a large cohort of clinical HCC samples and several published datasets in pancreatic cancer, esophageal carcinoma, stomach adenocarcinoma, and colon cancer. Our results demonstrate that MYBL1 upregulated the ANGPT2 expression, then induced angiogenesis and confer sorafenib resistance to HCC cells, and MYBL1 may represent a novel prognostic biomarker and therapeutic target for patients with HCC.

    Abstract: Accumulating evidence demonstrates that dysregulation of ubiquitin-mediated degradation of oncogene or suppressors plays an important role in several diseases. However, the function and molecular mechanisms of ubiquitin ligases underlying hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remain elusive. In the current study, we show that overexpression of TRIM54 was associated with HCC progression. TRIM54 overexpression facilitates proliferation and lung metastasis; however, inhibition of TRIM54 significantly suppressed HCC progression both in vitro and in vivo . Mechanically, we demonstrated that TRIM54 directly interacts with Axis inhibition proteins 1 (Axin1) and induces E3 ligase-dependent proteasomal turnover of Axin1 and substantially induces sustained activation of wnt/β-catenin in HCC cell lines. Furthermore, we showed that inhibition of the wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway via small molecule inhibitors significantly suppressed TRIM54-induced proliferation. Our data suggest that TRIM54 might function as an oncogenic gene and targeting the TRIM54/Axin1/β-catenin axis signaling may be a promising prognostic factor and a valuable therapeutic target for HCC.

    Abstract: The mammalian cerebrum performs high-level sensory perception, motor control and cognitive functions through highly specialized cortical and subcortical structures 1 . Recent surveys of mouse and human brains with single-cell transcriptomics 2–6 and high-throughput imaging technologies 7,8 have uncovered hundreds of neural cell types distributed in different brain regions, but the transcriptional regulatory programs that are responsible for the unique identity and function of each cell type remain unknown. Here we probe the accessible chromatin in more than 800,000 individual nuclei from 45 regions that span the adult mouse isocortex, olfactory bulb, hippocampus and cerebral nuclei, and use the resulting data to map the state of 491,818 candidate cis -regulatory DNA elements in 160 distinct cell types. We find high specificity of spatial distribution for not only excitatory neurons, but also most classes of inhibitory neurons and a subset of glial cell types. We characterize the gene regulatory sequences associated with the regional specificity within these cell types. We further link a considerable fraction of the cis -regulatory elements to putative target genes expressed in diverse cerebral cell types and predict transcriptional regulators that are involved in a broad spectrum of molecular and cellular pathways in different neuronal and glial cell populations. Our results provide a foundation for comprehensive analysis of gene regulatory programs of the mammalian brain and assist in the interpretation of noncoding risk variants associated with various neurological diseases and traits in humans.
