    Abstract: In this work, a hybrid composite of activated carbon (AC) functionalized with terpolymer hydrogel of polyvinyl alcohol/polyacrylamide/polyacrylic acid (PVA/PAAm/PAA) was prepared by γ-irradiation and used efficiently for sorption of Eu(III) and Sm(III) ions from aquatic solutions. Sewage sludge from the wastewater treatment plant was used to prepare AC, then activated by zinc chloride (ZnCl 2 ) and thermal treatment at 550 °C. The modification of AC by functionalized terpolymer has successfully occurred mainly to limit its precipitation and to increase its adsorption capacity which allowed capable interaction with the metal ions. Different advanced techniques were used to investigate the structure and properties of (PVA/PAAm/PAA)/AC composite before and after the sorption process. Using 20 kGy is sufficient to get gel fraction of 87.5% and equilibrium swelling was 39.1 g/g. The (PVA/PAm/PAA)/AC composite hydrogel showed a pH pzc at pH ∼3. FTIR and EDS confirmed the successful integration of the functional groups and constituent elements of AC into terpolymer hydrogel components. XRD results confirmed the typical diffraction peaks of AC in the composite and the calculated average crystallite size was 167.4 nm. The SEM morphology of AC appeared as grains distributed well into the composite. The effect of synthesized AC, PVA/PAAm/PAA and (PVA/PAAm/PAA)/AC sorbents were tested to uptake of Eu(III) and Sm(III) ions. The highest uptake was noticed for (PVA/PAAm/PAA)/AC composite and it was selected for studying the parameters affecting the sorption process such as pH, shaking time, initial concentration, and adsorbent dosage. Results of the experimental data showed that Langmuir isotherm and Pseudo-second-order kinetic models fit well the sorption process of both Eu(III) and Sm(III) ions with maximum sorption capacities of 173.24 and 160.41 mg/g and uptake percentage of 82.3% and 83.4%, respectively at the optimum conditions of pH 4, 180 min, 100 mg/L metal concentration and 0.01 g adsorbent mass. The thermodynamic parameters indicated endothermic and spontaneous nature of the sorption process. Additionally, the as-prepared composite afford high selectivity and uptake capacity for Eu(III) and Sm(III) ions at pH 4 even in the presence of competing cations; Cd(II), Co(II), Sr(II) and Cs(I). The (PVA/PAAm/PAA)/AC composite was used efficiently as a unique and selective adsorbent for the sorption of Eu(III) and Sm(III) ions.

    Abstract: Novel graphene-sugarcane bagasse-carboxy methyl cellulose (GSCCMC) nanocomposite have been synthesized via freeze-drying technique after preparation of graphene from natural graphite by modified Hummer method and evaluated as adsorbent for sorption of 60 Co(II)-radionuclides from radioactive waste solution and real wastewater samples using a series of batch adsorption experiments and compared with graphene. The synthesized (GSCCMC) nanocomposite was characterized using Fourier transformer infrared (FT-IR), Transmission electron microscope (TEM), Thermal analysis, Elemental analysis, Specific Surface area (S BET ) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), which confirmed the successful formation of graphene-sugarcane bagasse-carboxy methyl cellulose (GSCCMC) nanocomposite. Different parameters affecting the removal process including pH, contact time and metal ion concentration were investigated. Isotherm and kinetic models were studied. Adsorption kinetics described well by pseudo-second-order. The Langmuir model provides a better fitting than the Freundlich and Temkin models and the maximum adsorption capacity from Langmuir model were found to be 0.4186 and 0.2424 mol/g for (GSCCMC) nanocomposite and graphene (G), respectively. From Dubinin–Radushkevich (D–R) isotherm model, the sorption energy (E)-values of graphene (G) and (GSCCMC) are 10.16 and 10.564 kJ/mol, respectively and this mean the adsorption of 60 Co(II)-radionuclides can be explained by chemisorption process, which is characteristic of ion exchange. Desorption of 60 Co(II)-radionuclides from loaded (GSCCMC) nanocomposite was studied using different eluents (0.1 M HCl, 0.1 M NaOH and H 2 O). The data illustrated that 0.1 M HCl solution showed maximum desorption percent (D%) than other eluents. The economic viability of the adsorption process for the removal of 60 Co(II) from wastewater samples was studied. The result indicated that the cost for preparation of (GSCCMC) nanocomposite is lower than for (GSCCMC) nanocomposite that prepared from purchase the graphene powder. Therefore, the synthesized (GSCCMC) nanocomposite was used as regenerated material for sorption of 60 Co(II)-radionuclides from aqueous solutions and can be used for many times as a cost-effective and environmental friendly material in wastewater treatment.

    Abstract: The ultrasonication-supported sorption process is regarded as one of the most innovative and promising methods for removing heavy metal ions from contaminated water. This study describes the sorption of Ce( iii ) and Sr( ii ) ions from loaded aqueous solutions using ultrasound waves as an aid in the sorption process. These metal ions were sorbed on a sawdust-TiO 2 nanocomposite in the presence and absence of ultrasound. The use of ultrasound with sawdust-TiO 2 nanocomposite to remove the Ce( iii ) and Sr( ii ) ions resulted in better sorption for these metal ions than that in the absence of ultrasound. This is due to the synergistic process that occurs when ultrasound waves are combined with the nanocomposite. The main operating parameters are shown, including pH, metal ion concentration, sorbent dose, sonication time, ultrasonic power, temperature, and regeneration process. Kinetic and isotherm models were also investigated, which confirmed that the reaction was compatible with the pseudo-second order and Langmuir isotherm models. Sr( ii ) and Ce( iii ) ions exhibited the highest sorption at 45 °C, 0.5 g L −1 sorbent mass, 100 mg L −1 initial concentration for the two metals, pH 5.2 for Sr( ii ), pH 4 for Ce( iii ), and 30 min sonication time, which was found to be 92.51 mg g −1 and 73.7 mg g −1 , respectively. This study also demonstrated that the sawdust-TiO 2 nanocomposite was more effective at sorbing Sr( ii ) and Ce( iii ) ions when compared to other adsorbent materials.

    Abstract: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is characterized by low-circulating concentration of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and raised triacylglycerol (TAG). Exercise reduces hepatic fat content, improves insulin resistance and increases clearance of very-low-density lipoprotein-1 (VLDL 1 ). However, the effect of exercise on TAG and HDL-C metabolism is unknown. We randomized male participants to 16 wk of supervised, moderate-intensity aerobic exercise ( n = 15), or conventional lifestyle advice ( n = 12). Apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-I) and VLDL-TAG and apolipoprotein B (apoB) kinetics were investigated using stable isotopes (1-[ 13 C]-leucine and 1,1,2,3,3- 2 H 5 glycerol) pre- and postintervention. Participants underwent MRI/spectroscopy to assess changes in visceral fat. Results are means ± SD. At baseline, there were no differences between exercise and control groups for age (52.4 ± 7.5 vs. 52.8 ± 10.3 yr), body mass index (BMI: 31.6 ± 3.2 vs. 31.7 ± 3.6 kg/m 2 ), and waist circumference (109.3 ± 7.5 vs. 110.0 ± 13.6 cm). Percentage of liver fat was 23.8 (interquartile range 9.8–32.5%). Exercise reduced body weight (101.3 ± 10.2 to 97.9 ± 12.2 kg; P 〈 0.001) and hepatic fat content [from 19.6%, interquartile range (IQR) 14.6–36.1% to 8.9% (4.4–17.8%); P = 0.001] and increased the fraction HDL-C concentration (measured following ultracentrifugation) and apoA-I pool size with no change in the control group. However, plasma and VLDL 1 -TAG concentrations and HDL-apoA-I fractional catabolic rate (FCR) and production rate (PR) did not change significantly with exercise. Both at baseline (all participants) and after exercise there was an inverse correlation between apoA-I pool size and VLDL-TAG and -apoB pool size. The modest effect of exercise on HDL metabolism may be explained by the lack of effect on plasma and VLDL 1 -TAG.

    Abstract: In years with unfavorable weather, winter frost during the blossoming season can play a significant role in reducing fruit yield and impacting the profitability of cultivation. The mango Naomi cultivar Mangifera indica L. has a low canopy that is severely affected by the effects of frost stress. As a result of the canopy being exposed to physiological problems, vegetative development is significantly inhibited. The current investigation aimed to study the influence of spraying nitric oxide and fogging spray systems on Naomi mango trees grafted on ‘Succary’ rootstock under frost stress conditions. The treatments were as follows: nitric oxide (NO) 50 and 100 μM, fogging spray system, and control. In comparison to the control, the use of nitric oxide and a fogging system significantly improved the leaf area, photosynthesis pigments of the leaf, the membrane stability index, yield, and physical and chemical characteristics of the Naomi mango cultivar. For instance, the application of 50 μM NO, 100 μM NO, and the fogging spray system resulted in an increase in yield by 41.32, 106.12, and 121.43% during the 2020 season, and by 39.37, 101.30, and 124.68% during the 2021 season compared to the control, respectively. The fogging spray system and highest level of NO decreased electrolyte leakage, proline content, total phenolic content, catalase (CAT), peroxidases (POX), and polyphenol oxidase (PPO) enzyme activities in leaves. Furthermore, the number of damaged leaves per shoot was significantly reduced after the application of fogging spray systems and nitric oxide in comparison to the control. Regarding vegetative growth, our results indicated that the fogging spray system and spraying nitric oxide at 100 μM enhanced the leaf surface area compared to the control and other treatments. A similar trend was noticed regarding yield and fruit quality, whereas the best values were obtained when the fogging spray system using nitric oxide was sprayed at a concentration of 100 μM. The application of fogging spray systems and nitric oxide can improve the production and fruit quality of Naomi mango trees by reducing the effects of adverse frost stress conditions.

    Abstract: Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonists control postprandial glucose and lipid excursion in type 2 diabetes; however, the mechanisms are unclear. Objective To determine the mechanisms of postprandial lipid and glucose control with lixisenatide (GLP-1 analog) in type 2 diabetes. Design Randomized, double-blind, cross-over study. Setting Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Research, Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford, United Kingdom. Patients Eight obese men with type 2 diabetes [age, 57.3 ± 1.9 years; body mass index, 30.3 ± 1.0 kg/m2; glycosylated hemoglobin, 66.5 ± 2.6 mmol/mol (8.2% ± 0.3%)]. Interventions Two metabolic studies, 4 weeks after lixisenatide or placebo, with cross-over and repetition of studies. Main Outcome Measures Study one: very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) and chylomicron (CM) triacylglycerol (TAG) kinetics were measured with an IV bolus of [2H5]glycerol in a 12-hour study, with hourly feeding. Oral [13C] triolein, in a single meal, labeled enterally derived TAG. Study two: glucose kinetics were measured with [U-13C]glucose in a mixed-meal (plus acetaminophen to measure gastric emptying) and variable IV [6,6-2H2] glucose infusion. Results Study one: CM-TAG (but not VLDL-TAG) pool-size was lower with lixisenatide (P = 0.046). Lixisenatide reduced CM [13C]oleate area under the curve (AUC)60–480min concentration (P = 0.048) and increased CM-TAG clearance, with no effect on CM-TAG production rate. Study two: postprandial glucose and insulin AUC0–240min were reduced with lixisenatide (P = 0.0051; P & lt; 0.05). Total glucose production (P = 0.015), rate of glucose appearance from the meal (P = 0.0098), and acetaminophen AUC0–360min (P = 0.006) were lower with lixisenatide than with placebo. Conclusions Lixisenatide reduced [13C]oleate concentrations, derived from a single meal in CM-TAG and glucose rate of appearance from the meal through delayed gastric emptying. However, day-long CM production, measured with repeated meal feeding, was not reduced by lixisenatide and decreased CM-TAG concentration resulted from increased CM-TAG clearance.
