Abstract: In addition to poor infrastructure, and human resource constraints, forensic medicine specialists in developing countries face many external challenges. Objectives We aimed to investigate the prevalence, type, and source of external challenges confronting them including sex, age, religion, deceased's place of residence and the number of accompanying relatives. Materials and methods This cross-sectional, observational study was conducted between August 2020 and July 2022 at the Mortuary of AIIMS, Bhubaneswar with the approval of the ethical committee. Results Of note, forensic medicine specialists faced external challenges in about one in five cases (20.5%). Most demands were to either minimise the autopsy procedure (n = 65) or to conduct the autopsy at inappropriate times (n = 58). The demands to minimise the autopsy procedure were significantly associated with the deceased's age (p = 0.046), religion (p = 0.010), socioeconomic class (p = 0.020) and manner of death (p = 0.019). Conclusions Our study found that forensic medicine specialists in India face significant external challenges. Avoiding unnecessary complete autopsies, implementing night autopsies, and embracing minimally invasive autopsies are recommended to mitigate these challenges.

Abstract: Approximately 7% of pregnant women in the United States use electronic-cigarette (e-cig) devices during pregnancy. There is, however, no scientific evidence to support e-cig use as being ‘safe’ during pregnancy. Little is known about the effects of fetal exposures to e-cig aerosols on lung alveologenesis. In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that in utero exposure to e-cig aerosol impairs lung alveologenesis and pulmonary function in neonates. Pregnant BALB/c mice were exposed 2 h a day for 20 consecutive days during gestation to either filtered air or cinnamon-flavored e-cig aerosol (36 mg/mL of nicotine). Lung tissue was collected in offspring during lung alveologenesis on postnatal day (PND) 5 and PND11. Lung function was measured at PND11. Exposure to e-cig aerosol in utero led to a significant decrease in body weights at birth which was sustained through PND5. At PND5, in utero e-cig exposures dysregulated genes related to Wnt signaling and epigenetic modifications in both females (~ 120 genes) and males (40 genes). These alterations were accompanied by reduced lung fibrillar collagen content at PND5—a time point when collagen content is close to its peak to support alveoli formation. In utero exposure to e-cig aerosol also increased the Newtonian resistance of offspring at PND11, suggesting a narrowing of the conducting airways. At PND11, in females, transcriptomic dysregulation associated with epigenetic alterations was sustained (17 genes), while WNT signaling dysregulation was largely resolved (10 genes). In males, at PND11, the expression of only 4 genes associated with epigenetics was dysregulated, while 16 Wnt related-genes were altered. These data demonstrate that in utero exposures to cinnamon-flavored e-cig aerosols alter lung structure and function and induce sex-specific molecular signatures during lung alveologenesis in neonatal mice. This may reflect epigenetic programming affecting lung disease development later in life.

Abstract: The age determination of an individual is indispensable in various civil and criminal cases. The sternum is one of the key bones for age estimation beyond 25 years. Many studies were done in the past on age determination from the sternum had variable and inconclusive results. Further, the region-specific research on the sternum for age determination is lacking from the eastern Indian population. The present study was done to examine the sternum for its fusion status along each segment, mesosternum-xiphisternal (MXJ) junction, and manubrium-sternal (MSJ) joint by direct inspection. This cross-sectional, observational study was conducted in the mortuary of a tertiary health care center in ABC. 102 sterna were collected from known corpses during autopsy which included 73 males and 29 females aged between 6 years to 85 years. The earliest complete fusion of manubrium with the body was observed to be 17 years in females and 24 years in males. Whereas the maximum number of cases of complete fusion was observed among 51-60 years of age irrespective of the sexes, indicative of a very limited role of the sternum in estimating the age. The fusion of each segment of mesosternum has utility in determining age beyond 20 years and the xiphisternal joint remains reliable corroborative evidence for the age beyond 40 years.

Abstract: Climbers influence the diversity and composition of forest ecosystem immensely. We have investigated the floristic composition of climbing plants in tropical forests of Similipal Biosphere Reserve (SBR), Odisha, India. A total of 120 climber plant species belonging to 74 genera and 33 families were documented in all forests. Among families, the most speciose families were Fabaceae (25 species) and Convolvulaceae (22 species) followed by Cucurbitaceae (11 species), Vitaceae (8 species), Dioscoreaceae (7 species) etc. Similarly, dominant genera were Ipomoea possessing the highest number of species i.e., 9 species followed by Dioscorea (7 species), Vigna (6 species) and Cissus (4 species) etc. There was a remarkable difference noted in the structure and climbing mechanism of different climbers.  The climbing plants diversity of SBR not only contributing to the overall forest biodiversity significantly but also maintain the ecological balance of the whole ecosystem. Climbers are the major resource of economic value in and around the biosphere reserve and thus their use and sustainable management must be given principal attention.

Abstract: Death from natural diseases prior to or after entering the water is relatively rare but does occur. These underlying natural diseases lead to the incapacitation of the water victims and culminate in accidental or unintentional drownings. People who are unaware or ignorant of their disease status, living in rural areas with nearby open water sources, and belonging to economically backward communities in developing countries are more vulnerable to these unintentional drownings and pose a substantial challenge in determining the cause of death. Here we present a 45-year-old, underweight woman who brought a history of drowning in a pond near her house where she regularly took a bath. The history from the relatives and crime scene investigation was unremarkable. Thalamic hemorrhage, intraventricular hemorrhage, triple vessel atherosclerosis of the heart, and left ventricular hypertrophy suggestive of undiagnosed hypertension were discerned only after the autopsy, besides profound findings of drowning. This report highlights the significance of a meticulous autopsy to explain the cause of death in unwitnessed open water drownings, thus benefitting the bystanders and investigating team.

Abstract: Suicide, is one of the most painful way of death and even more so painful for the near and dear ones. Suicide note if recovered is heart breaking, as it becomes the last and one way communication from the deceased to his family/ friends. In almost 95% of cases it is written in own handwriting and consisting of 10-15 sentences or small paragraph. While there have been studies related to this and was observed that number of words usually doesn’t make a difference between complete and half attempt suicide. To understand a suicide note, Relevance theory was proposed which is based on a principle that "every utterance conveys the information that it is relevant enough for it to be worth the addressee's effort to process it". The note which was recovered from the deceased`s pocket and whereby mentioning that “life had become painful and stuck in a situation from where he couldn’t get out”, clearly conveys about the stress and problems in his life, though did not mention clearly or any specifics. A study conducted in USA regarding the words used in suicide notes and observed that words referencing to inclusive space like “with” or “include” are not usually used which is similar to our case and it signifies isolation or lack of belongingness.

Abstract: The phytogeography of Similipal Biosphere Reserve (SBR), Odisha, India, reveals very interesting information on distribution of tree species.  Phytogeographical affinities of tree species of SBR has been analysed by obtaining the information about the species distribution at local and global scale. A total of 240 tree species were recorded and their phytogeographical affinities were compiled with different countries of the globe. An analysis of the affinities revealed that SBR has strong affinity with Sri-Lanka (46.66%) and Myanmar (45.83%) followed by China, Malaysia, Thailand, Australia and Africa. SBR has also affinity with Himalayan vegetation possessing several trees and orchids find distribution in both the areas. The phytogeographical affinity of SBR supports the migration, establishment and naturalization of flora from/to SBR. This hypothesis needs further study for biogeographical mapping of Indian sub-continent.
