Abstract: The purpose of this study is to encourage graduate students to facilitate a participatory mapping activity with high school students, to have their voices heard in the disaster risk reduction (DRR) agenda. Design/methodology/approach A participatory mapping, youth-led session, was conducted with 22 high school students, where they had to identify flood and landslide-prone areas. Then, they were asked to propose and plan DRR measures in collaboration with local partners in São Luiz do Paraitinga, Brazil. Findings The participatory method engaged the graduate students and the high school students in the DRR debate, allowing them to map hazards and vulnerabilities, and to discuss five incubation projects for enhancing DRR in the city. Originality/value This research highlights the importance of involving young people in DRR formulation and planning to build local capacities in younger generations. The outputs were shared with the local civil defense and a local non-governmental organization (NGO), who suggested recommendations to improve the five incubation projects.

Abstract: The La Plata River basin is the second largest basin of South America after the Amazon basin, and it is located in an international area that occupies territories of Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, Paraguay, and Bolivia, areas of great economic activity. In the present work, the water budget over the region was studied and the atmospheric and terrestrial components were analyzed to investigate the Center for Weather Forecast and Climate Studies/Center for Ocean–Land–Atmosphere Studies (CPTEC/COLA) atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM) behavior in a simulation of 10 yr. The analysis was performed considering two sectors, northern and southern, because of their different behaviors, and the main characteristics were simulated by the model. The northern sector presents a well-defined annual cycle with well-established wet conditions in the summer, when there is development of the South Atlantic convergence zone (SACZ). In the southern sector, there is a weak annual cycle and the hydrological variables do not have large seasonal variations as in the northern sector. A period of maximum precipitation is identified at the end of spring in the southern sector. Moisture flux convergence (MFC) in the model occurs over southeast Brazil during summer and over northern Argentina in the spring, consistent with observations. Analysis of the meridional and zonal moisture fluxes reveals that there is an intrusion of moisture from the tropical region, southward, and also flux from the Atlantic Ocean, that feed both sectors. The flux from the Amazon region was the main source of external moisture during the summer season, while the flux from the Atlantic Ocean was dominant during winter. Additional analysis of El Niño 1982/83 and La Niña 1988/89 episodes showed the importance of Amazon and Atlantic moisture fluxes to the La Plata basin region. During El Niño 1982/83 there was more moisture flux from the Amazon region to the southern sector than during La Niña 1988/89. This feature was related to droughts during La Niña and floods during El Niño in the La Plata region.

Abstract: Global warming has changed the climate in many parts of the world and affected ecosystems due to anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that contribute to the rise in the surface temperature of the planet. Rising temperatures have important effects on agriculture, which accounts for one- third of Brazil's economy. This study assesses the impact of climate change over agriculture on cassava yield in Guapimirim city, State of Rio de Janeiro, Southeast Brazil. Bias corrected climate simulation performed from the nested model Eta-HadGEM2-ES was used to reproduce the climate data observed in the region and for climate projections under Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs) 4.5 and 8.5 scenarios. Simulated rainfall and evapotranspiration for the period between 1961 and 1990 was compared to the observation period and, showed a correlation with R² = 0.99 and the Average Absolute Percentage Error was less than 5.0%. The effect of climate projections on water stress during crop development was estimated using the Thornthwaite-Mather (TM) soil water balance adapted for crops. Rainfall and actual evapotranspiration projections for the three thirty-year periods 2011-2040, 2041-2070, 2071-2100 served as the basis for the assessment of the Water Requirement Satisfaction Index (WRSI) and Yield Reduction (YR) for cassava crop. Projections show significant cassava yield losses around 8.6 and 9.7 ton ha-1, respectively, under RCPs 4.5 and 8.5. This approach allows exploratory analysis applied to support crop management decision-making and irrigation strategies for sustainable agriculture and to increase crop yield in the face of impacts of climate change.

The Brazilian Forest Code implemented in 2012 kept the definition of preservation areas established in the former Forest Code (1965) but changed the delimitation parameters especially for Permanent Preservation Area (PPA) on the top of hills. In Rio de Janeiro, The State Environmental Institute (Inea) established a Resolution in 2014 to guide PPA delimitation in the state. This resolution follows most of the policies implemented by the Brazilian Forest Code of 2012 but defined new parameters for determining the hills bases. This study's goal consists on mapping the PPA on top of hill according to both legal devices and assessing the extension and connectivity of the preservation areas on São João river basin, RJ. Following the Forest Code of 2012, 60 fragments of PPA were delimited, with 553 ha of total area and distributed without any connectivity on higher altitudes. Meanwhile, following Resolution of 2014, 324 fragments of PPA were mapped, totalizing 8,420 ha, situated along the watershed and middles altitudes and enhancing connectivity. We conclude that the alteration of the delimitation parameters has an influence on the extension and connectivity of the PPA on top of hills. Our results suggest the need of deeper evaluations in order to guarantee that methodologies for PPA delimitation on top of hills embodied in legal instruments meet the environment functions clearly established for PPA in the 2012 Brazilian Forest Code. Keywords: Forest Code, Protected areas, Forest fragmentation, Geoprocessing
