Abstract: We present a theoretical expression in the form of the Pearcey function by deducing the Fresnel diffraction distribution of an elliptic line. Then, we numerically simulate and experimentally generate this kind of new Pearcey beams by using the Fresnel diffraction of optical ellipse line. This kind of beams can be referred to as Bi-Pearcey beams because their appearance of the topological structure is very similar to the combination of two face-to-face classical Pearcey beams. It is no doubt that so-called Bi-Pearcey beams are the new member of a family of form-invariant Pearcey beams. Subsequently, we also provide the theoretical mechanism of generating Bi-Pearcey beams based on the Zeeman catastrophe machine of catastrophic theory. By solving the critical equation of potential function of Bi-Pearcey beams generated by an ellipse line, we find that the optical morphogenesis of Bi-Pearcey beams is determined by the number of roots of the critical equation. The critical equation of potential function of Bi-Pearcey beams is a classical Cartan equation, which has at most three real roots. For the Fresnel diffraction of ellipse line, three real roots of the critical equation are corresponding to three stable points and represent three diffraction lines, hence they can be used to examine the optical topological structure of Bi-Pearcey beams. By choosing the appropriate control variable of Bi-Pearcey beams, two diffraction lines of an ellipse line overlap, and the strong caustic line of Bi-Pearcey beams is correspondingly generated when the two of the three real roots of the critical equation are equal. If the three real roots of the critical equation are all equal, the strongest cusps of Bi-Pearcey beams are generated, accordingly. Moreover, the equation of the caustic line and their positions of four cusps of Bi-Pearcey beams are given by solving the control variable equation of Bi-Pearcey beams. In conclusion, we elucidate the mathematical mechanism of topical morphogenesis of Bi-Pearcey beams based on catastrophic theory.

Abstract: Like the theoretical pattern of non-diffracting Bessel beams, ideal non-diffracting Mathieu beams also carry infinite energy, but cannot be generated as a physically realizable entity. Mathieu-Gaussian beams can be experimentally generated by modulating ideal Mathieu beams with a Gaussian function, and thus they are a kind of pseudo-non-diffracting beams with finite energy and finite transverse extent. The research of Mathieu-Gaussian beam propagating characteristics in free space is of great significance. In order to analytically study the propagation of Mathieu-Gaussian beams, the Mathieu function is expanded into the superposition of a series of Bessel functions in polar coordinates based on the superposition principle of light waves. It means that the Mathieu-Gaussian beam can be converted into accumulation of the infinite terms of the Bessel beams with different orders. According to the properties of the Bessel function, the free-space propagation properties of Mathieu-Gaussian beams can be studied in the circular cylindrical coordinates. Thus, a group of virtual optical sources are introduced to generate the odd Mathieu-Gaussian beams of the first kind, i.e., (2n+2)th-order, which is a family of Mathieu-Gaussian beams. Using the virtual source technique and the Green function, we derive the rigorous integral formula for the odd Mathieu-Gaussian beams of the first kind. Taking for example the first three orders with non-paraxial corrections, the analytical solution of the on-axis field of odd Mathieu-Gaussian beams of the first kind is further obtained from the integral formula. The axial intensity distribution of the odd Mathieu-Gaussian beams of the first kind is numerically calculated by the integral formula. The simulation results show that the calculation results obtained with the paraxial theory and the rigorous integral expressions of non-paraxial Mathieu-Gaussian beams are obviously different when the propagation distance of the odd Mathieu-Gaussian beams of the first kind is small. The calculation results of the two methods are coming closer and closer with the increasing propagation distance. The results indicate that the correct results can be obtained with the paraxial theory when we study the propagation of Mathieu-Gaussian beams in the far-field, but the non-paraxial theory must be used to obtain correct results when we study the propagation of Mathieu-Gaussian beams in the near-field. Owing to the complexity of the non-paraxial theory, it is difficult to obtain the exact analytic solutions of Mathieu-Gaussian beams in the near-field with the classical diffraction theory. Based on the superposition principle of light waves, by introducing the virtual source technique and the Green function, the complex Mathieu-Gaussian function can be expanded into the superposition of a series of simple Bessel functions, and the axial intensity distributions of Mathieu-Gaussian beams in the far-field and the near-field can be studied well. It will also provide a feasible method to study other complex beams propagating in free space.

Abstract: Based on differential geometry and optical diffraction theory, the determinants of optical structure of Pearcey beams are examined. We theoretically propose and experimentally observe a bundle of Pearcey beams with different optical topology structures. Besides, we have studied their properties and the results show that the structure of Pearcey beams can be flexibly controlled, hence they will be expected to play a new role in some research fields.

Abstract: Most cardiovascular diseases occur in low‐ and middle‐income regions of the world, but the socioeconomic distribution within China remains unclear. Our study aims to investigate whether the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases differs among high‐, middle‐, and low‐income regions of China and to explore the reasons for the disparities. Methods and Results We enrolled 46 285 individuals from 115 urban and rural communities in 12 provinces across China between 2005 and 2009. We recorded their medical histories of cardiovascular diseases and calculated the INTERHEART Risk Score for the assessment of cardiovascular risk‐factor burden, with higher scores indicating greater burden. The mean INTERHEART Risk Score was higher in high‐ and middle‐income regions than in low‐income regions (9.47, 9.48, and 8.58, respectively, P 〈 0.0001). By contrast, the prevalence of total cardiovascular disease (stroke, ischemic heart disease, and other heart diseases that led to hospitalization) was lower in high‐ and middle‐income regions than in low‐income regions (7.46%, 7.42%, and 8.36%, respectively, P trend =0.0064). In high‐ and middle‐income regions, urban communities have higher INTERHEART Risk Score and higher prevalent rate than rural communities. In low‐income regions, however, the prevalence of total cardiovascular disease was similar between urban and rural areas despite the significantly higher INTERHEART Risk Score for urban settings. Conclusions We detected an inverse trend between risk‐factor burden and cardiovascular disease prevalence in urban and rural communities in high‐, middle‐, and low‐income regions of China. Such asymmetry may be attributed to the interregional differences in residents’ awareness, quality of healthcare, and availability and affordability of medical services.

Abstract: This study aimed to obtain the prevalence of hyperlipidemia and its related factors in Shanxi Province, China using multivariate logistic regression analysis and tabu search-based Bayesian networks (BNs). A multi-stage stratified random sampling method was adopted to obtain samples among the general population aged 18 years or above. The prevalence of hyperlipidemia in Shanxi Province was 42.6%. Multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that gender, age, region, occupation, vegetable intake level, physical activity, body mass index, central obesity, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus are associated with hyperlipidemia. BNs were used to find connections between those related factors and hyperlipidemia, which were established by a complex network structure. The results showed that BNs can not only be used to find out the correlative factors of hyperlipidemia but also to analyse how these factors affect hyperlipidemia and their interrelationships, which is consistent with practical theory, is superior to logistic regression and has better application prospects.

Abstract: A new method for preparing magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles coated by organic dye-doped silica shell was developed in this article. Iron oxide nanoparticles were first coated with dye-impregnated silica shell by the hydrolysis of hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HTMOS) which produced a hydrophobic core for the entrapment of organic dye molecules. Then, the particles were coated with a hydrophilic shell by the hydrolysis of tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS), which enabled water dispersal of the resulting nanoparticles. The final product was characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, and vibration sample magnetometer. All the characterization results proved the final samples possessed magnetic and fluorescent properties simultaneously. And this new multifunctional nanomaterial possessed high photostability and minimal dye leakage.

Abstract: Collective movement has emerged as a key area of interest in animal behavior. While individual differences are often viewed as a potential threat to group cohesion, growing evidence suggests that these differences can actually influence an animal’s behavior as an initiator or follower during collective movements, thereby driving the group‘s movement and decision-making processes. To resolve the divergence, we asked how personality can affect the dynamics of collective movements in one group of free-ranging Tibetan macaques (Macaca thibetana) in Huangshan, China. We assessed individual personality using principal component analysis and applied the generalized linear mixed model and linear mixed model to examine the influence of personality on decision making during collective movements. Our findings reveled three distinct personality types among Tibetan macaques: sociability, boldness, and anxiousness. Individuals with higher sociability scores and rank, or those with lower anxiousness scores, were more likely to initiate successful collective movements. Older individuals were less successful in initiating movements compared to young adults. Leaders with lower anxiousness scores or higher rank attracted more followers, with females attracting larger groups than males. As for followers, individuals with higher rank tended to join the collective movement earlier. Additionally, individuals with higher sociability or boldness scores had shorter joining latency in collective movement. Finally, there was a longer joining latency for middle-aged adults compared to young adults. These results suggest that individual differences are a potential driver of collective movements. We provide some insights into the relationships between personality and decision making in Tibetan macaques.

Abstract: This article aims to understand the prevalence of hyperlipidemia and its related factors in Shanxi Province. On the basis of multivariate Logistic regression analysis to find out the influencing factors closely related to hyperlipidemia, the complex network connection between various variables was presented through Bayesian networks(BNs). Methods Logistic regression was used to screen for hyperlipidemia-related variables, and then the complex network connection between various variables was presented through BNs. Since some drawbacks stand out in the Max-Min Hill-Climbing (MMHC) hybrid algorithm, extra hybrid algorithms are proposed to construct the BN structure: MMPC-Tabu, Fast.iamb-Tabu and Inter.iamb-Tabu. To assess their performance, we made a comparison between these three hybrid algorithms with the widely used MMHC hybrid algorithm on randomly generated datasets. Afterwards, the optimized BN was determined to explore to study related factors for hyperlipidemia. We also make a comparison between the BN model with logistic regression model. Results The BN constructed by Inter.iamb-Tabu hybrid algorithm had the best fitting degree to the benchmark networks, and was used to construct the BN model of hyperlipidemia. Multivariate logistic regression analysis suggested that gender, smoking, central obesity, daily average salt intake, daily average oil intake, diabetes mellitus, hypertension and physical activity were associated with hyperlipidemia. BNs model of hyperlipidemia further showed that gender, BMI, and physical activity were directly related to the occurrence of hyperlipidemia, hyperlipidemia was directly related to the occurrence of diabetes mellitus and hypertension; the average daily salt intake, daily average oil consumption, smoking, and central obesity were indirectly related to hyperlipidemia. Conclusions The BN of hyperlipidemia constructed by the Inter.iamb-Tabu hybrid algorithm is more reasonable, and allows for the overall linking effect between factors and diseases, revealing the direct and indirect factors associated with hyperlipidemia and correlation between related variables, which can provide a new approach to the study of chronic diseases and their associated factors.
