Abstract: Background: The knowledge of nursing staff regarding hepatitis B virus (HBV) when their daily activities will be closely related to patients’ body fluids, plays vital role in minimizing the risk of acquiring HBV infection. Objective: We aimed to assess the knowledge regarding HBV infection among nursing staff. Materials and Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted using a structured self-administered questionnaire among the nursing staff in Civil hospital, Shahpur, Kangra (HP). Results: Most (60%) of staff nurses had good knowledge followed by (3%) who had excellent knowledge and few (1%) staff nurses with average knowledge score regarding universal precautions about hepatitis B. No staff nurse had poor knowledge score. All of the (100%) staff nurses had desirable attitude regarding universal precautions about hepatitis B. Conclusion: The staff had good knowledge regarding HBV infection and its preventive aspect.

Abstract: Aim: To study the clinico-etiological profile of children with thrombocytopenia. Methods: This prospective hospital-based study included all children ( 〈 18 years) with thrombocytopenia at the time of hospitalization and/or thrombocytopenia during the course of their hospital stay. A detailed history was recorded and appropriate laboratory investigations were carried out. Results: The study group comprised 246 children (mean age, 9.29 years; median age, 10 years) with male to female ratio of 1.5:1. Nearly 45% of children were above 10 years of age. Trends of admissions showed that the majority of children with thrombocytopenia (n = 115) got hospitalized during the rainy season, followed by summer (n = 84). Fever (72.8%), pallor (52.8%), bleeding manifestations (22%), lymphadenopathy (20.3%), and splenomegaly (20.3%) were common clinical features. Petechiae was the most common bleeding manifestation (63%). Septicemia (24%) was the most common etiology, followed by megaloblastic anemia (14.6%), undiagnosed fever (10.2%), local infection (9.3%), hepatitis (6.5%), and scrub typhus (6.1%). About nine children died. All those who died had septicemia and multi-organ dysfunction (MOD). On logistic regression analysis, age 〉 10 years, presence of bleeding, arthralgia, rash, pallor, gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms, hematological disorders, and malignancy were associated with severe thrombocytopenia. Conclusion: Thrombocytopenia is a common hematological observation. This study revealed seasonal variation in the occurrence of thrombocytopenia in children, with the maximum number of cases in the rainy season. Septicemia is the commonest etiology. The majority of children with thrombocytopenia have no bleeding manifestations. Age 〉 10 years, presence of bleeding, arthralgia, rash, pallor, GI symptoms, hematological disorders, and malignancy are associated with severe thrombocytopenia.

Abstract: Hypertension is one of the common complications and contributes significantly to perinatal mortality and morbidity. Hypertension is a sign of underlying pathology which may be pre-existing or appear for the first time during pregnancy. The identification of clinical entity and effective management plays a significant role in the outcome of pregnancy, both for the mother and the baby. The main aim of the study was to assess the effect of planned teaching on the knowledge regarding pregnancy induced hypertension among antenatal mothers. The study was conducted on conveniently selected 30 samples of antenatal mothers in Civil hospital, Shahpur. Data was collected by Socio-demographic variables and Self Structured Knowledge Questionnaire. Collected data was analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistics. Results indicated that the planned teaching had significant impact on knowledge regarding pregnancy induced hypertension among antenatal mothers. In this study, posttest knowledge score was associated with education and occupation.

Abstract: Osler-Weber-Rendu disease or hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is an autosomal dominant genetic disorder. First recognised in the 19th century, this rare often undiagnosed familial disorder with abnormal vascular structures, causes bleeding from the nose and gastrointestinal tract. This condition is characterised by lack of communicating capillaries connecting arteries and veins resulting in multiple arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) and telangiectasia. We describe a case report of anaesthesia management of a patient with Osler-Weber-Rendu disease.

Abstract: Background: Globally the rate of caesarean section delivery has been increasing among women. The perceptions surrounding caesarean section delivery may have a significant role in the decision-making process which influenced by multiple complex factors like cultural values, beliefs and anticipations of the birth, possible traumatic events in life, available social support, and personal sense of control, are only a few. Aim: To compare the attitude towards caesarean section delivery between primigravid women and multigravid women with and without previous history of caesarean section delivery, and also to find the association of attitude of antenatal mothers with their selected demographic variables. Methodology: The descriptive study approach has been used in view of accomplishing the main objectives of the study. The tools consist of demographic profile along with structured attitude questionnaire. The subject consisted of 10 antenatal mothers and was selected by purposive sampling technique. Data was analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: The attitude assessed using attitude scale showed that majority of antenatal mothers (60%) had favorable attitude towards caesarean section. There was no significant relationship between the attitude of primi gravid and multi gravid mothers. There was no significant association found between the attitude of antenatal mothers with their selected demographic variables like age, religion, type of family, education, income per month, residence, and parity. Conclusion: Although findings revealed that most pregnant women prefer caesarean section delivery, it was found that pregnant women need more guidance by midwives and obstetricians.

Abstract: Introduction: In developing countries, malnutrition among children is a major public-health issue. It is one of the most serious global risk factor for illness and death. Malnutrition during children has an impact later in life as it is associated with significant functional impairment, reduced work capacity and decreased economic productivity. Malnourished children are more likely to suffer from delayed psychological development, poor school performance and lower intellectual achievements. Aim: Effectiveness of Teaching Programme on Malnutrition and its Prevention in under-five children. Methods: Fifty children for the were enrolled through simple randomization method in this study. Results: After administration of teaching program, 92% subjects had adequate knowledge and 8% had moderate knowledge. None of the subjects had inadequate level of knowledge showing effectiveness of teaching program. Post-test overall knowledge score was significantly higher in comparison to pre-test overall knowledge score (32.20 ± 8.77 vs. 8.14 ± 10.99; P=0.01). Age, gender, nationality, family income, fathers’ occupation, mothers’ education, religion, students’ status, previous knowledge, and source of information were significantly associated with the post-test level of knowledge on malnutrition and its prevention. Conclusion: Teaching programme is effective in increasing knowledge of adolescent regarding malnutrition and its prevention in under-five children.

Abstract: Background: Weaning is vital for the growth and development of infants and children. If a baby is to maintain the expected rate of growth and remain healthy and well nourished, supplementary feeding has to be resorted from the 6th month of age onwards to meet nutritional requirements. Aim: To evaluate the effect of planned teaching program on the knowledge regarding weaning among mothers of infants. Methods: Total s 60 mothers were included. Data was collected by using a self structured questionnaire. Results: Out of 60 mothers in pretest, 27 (45%) had poor, 33(55%) had average and no one (0%) had good knowledge score. Post test results revealed that no one (0%) had poor knowledge, 42(70%) scored average knowledge, 18(30%) achieved good knowledge. The improvement in the knowledge was statistically significant (P=0.0002) Conclusion: The planed teaching program utilized in the study had been found to be an effective tool for significantly improving the mother`s knowledge.
