    Abstract: Due to its high influence on agriculture, infrastructure, water management, and other areas, precipitation is one of the most important climate factors. However, it is still challenging for climate models to realistically reproduce regional patterns, temporal variability, and precipitation intensity. This is especially true for extreme conditions and terrains with heterogeneous orography, like the Carpathian region. For the sake of quantifying the uncertainty and improving the accuracy of the precipitation simulations of the RegCM4.7 regional climate model over the Carpathian region, we evaluate the performance of different options at 10 km horizontal resolution, using ERA-Interim reanalysis data as initial and boundary conditions. Altogether 24 simulations were carried out by using various combinations of the physical schemes (2 land surface, 2 microphysics, 3 cumulus convection and 2 planetary boundary layer (PBL) schemes) for the year 2010, which was the wettest year in the Carpathian region (especially in Hungary) since 1901. Different parameterization combinations lead to different simulated climates, so their variance can serve as an estimate of model uncertainty due to the representation of unresolved phenomena. The results show that RegCM is sensitive to the choice of scheme combinations. The analysis of the RegCM4.7 ensemble indicates systematic precipitation biases, which are linked to different physical mechanisms in the summer and winter seasons. Based on the results, RegCM4.7 is the most sensitive to the applied convection scheme, but the interactions with the other schemes (e.g., land surface and microphysics) affect the convective and large-scale precipitation in addition to the total precipitation.

    Abstract: The paper investigates the reference corpus of a climate change contrarian report. We categorized the journal abstracts according to the endorsement positions on anthropogenic climate change. These results were contrasted by an in-text citation analysis. We focused here on the role of the papers included by the report editors concerning the mainstream claims around climate change. Our results showed moderate differences in the endorsement rates as well as in the sources of contrarian arguments considering the contrarian report in general and the presented journals specifically. These outcomes indicate differences among the journals regarding editorial practice, topic-dependency, and the home field advantage of some authors. Beyond the bibliometric data, our additional rhetorical analysis showed that language and wording are at least as important as the references backing the claims. The well-founded atmosphere of doubt in the climate skeptic report relies on two prevalent factors working together: relevant information accumulated on methodological uncertainties and findings that do not support mainstream knowledge claims (1); and solemn rhetoric supplemented with proper re-contextualization and reinterpretation (2).

    Abstract: Variation in climatic conditions is an important driving force of ecological processes. Populations are under selection to respond to climatic changes with respect to phenology of the annual cycle (e.g. breeding, migration) and life‐history. As teleconnections can reflect climate on a global scale, the responses of terrestrial animals are often investigated in relation to the El Niño‐Southern Oscillation and North Atlantic Oscillation. However, investigation of other teleconnections and local climate is often neglected. In this study, we examined over a 33‐year period the relationships between four teleconnections (El Niño‐Southern Oscillation, North Atlantic Oscillation, Arctic Oscillation, East Atlantic Pattern), local weather parameters (temperature and precipitation) and reproduction in great tits Parus major and blue tits Cyanistes caeruleus in the Carpathian Basin, Hungary. Furthermore, we explored how annual variations in the timing of food availability were correlated with breeding performance. In both species, annual laying date was negatively associated with the Arctic Oscillation. The date of peak abundance of caterpillars was negatively associated with local temperatures in December–January, while laying date was negatively related to January–March temperature. We found that date of peak abundance of caterpillars and laying date of great tits advanced, while in blue tits clutch size decreased over the decades but laying date did not advance. The results suggest that weather conditions during the months that preceded the breeding season, as well as temporally more distant winter conditions, were connected to breeding date. Our results highlight that phenological synchronization to food availability was different between the two tit species, namely it was disrupted in blue tits only. Additionally, the results suggest that in order to find the climatic drivers of the phenological changes of organisms, we should analyze a broader range of global meteorological parameters.

    Abstract: The goal of the present paper is to investigate whether any objectively defined and statistically significant changes can be discovered in one of the longest homogenized instrumental temperature records in East-Central Europe. Thus, it is hoped that the present analysis will add to earlier attempts and elucidate the persistence of the warming period observed in the early 20th century. Similar to the global tendency, the Early Twentieth Century Warming (hereinafter, ETCW) period can be identified between 1931 and 1951 in the annual mean temperature time series of Keszthely, a small town in Hungary. The Mann-Kendall trend test was used to determine whether a monotonic trend was present, as it is not possible to regard the residuals of the linear trend as normally distributed. A significant rising trend can be observed in the warming period in spring of the years between 1925 and 1951. In case of summer and autumn, this period cannot be characterized as having any significant identifiable trend. A rise in the mean can, however, be recognized. Overall, the specific regional manifestation of the global ETCW may clearly be illustrated in this study via detailed statistical analysis of the temperature records for Keszthely, a location with one of the longest temperature records in Hungary. However, other regions surrounding Hungary show similar climatic trends, emphasizing the fact that the behaviour presented here is not unique to Central and Eastern Europe.

    Abstract: In addition to the one-dimensional mathematical statistical methods used to study the climate and its possible variations, the study of several elements together is also worthwhile. Here, a combined analysis of precipitation and temperature time series was performed using the norm method based on the probability distribution of the elements. This means, schematically speaking, that each component was transformed into a standard normal distribution so that no element was dominant. The transformed components were sorted into a vector, the inverse of the correlation matrix was determined and the resulting norm was calculated. Where this norm was at the maximum, the extreme vector, in this case the extreme month, was found. In this paper, we presented the results obtained from a joint analysis of the monthly precipitation and temperature time series for the whole territory of Hungary over the period 1871–2020. To do this, multidimensional statistical tests that allowed the detection of climate change were defined. In the present analysis, we restricted ourselves to two-dimensional analyses. The results showed that none of the tests could detect two-dimensional climate change on a spatial average for the months of January, April, July and December, while all the statistical tests used indicated a clear change in the months of March and August. As for the other months, one or two, but not necessarily all tests, showed climate change in two dimensions.

    Abstract: Mental representations of one’s own body provide useful reference when negotiating physical environmental challenges. Body-awareness is a neuro-ontogenetic precursor for higher order self-representation, but there is a lack of an ecologically valid experimental approach to it among nonhuman species. We tested dogs ( N  = 32) in the ‘body as an obstacle’ task. They had to pick up and give an object to their owner, whilst standing on a small mat. In the test condition we attached the object to the mat, thus the dogs had to leave the mat because otherwise they could not lift the object. Dogs came off the mat more frequently and sooner in the test condition, than in the main control condition, where the object was attached to the ground. This is the first convincing evidence of body awareness through the understanding of the consequence of own actions in a species where previously no higher-order self-representation capacity was found. We urge for an ecologically valid approach, and following of bottom-up methods, in studying modularly constructed self-representation.
