Abstract:
The aim of the present study is to identify the specific role of each parent in the construction of their child's attachment representations. The Adult Attachment Interview (George, Kaplan et Main, 1985) was administered to the fathers and the mothers of 30 families ; their three-year-old children took the Story Completion Task ( Bretherton et al., 1990). Results show positive correlations between mother and child representations. This confirms previous findings showing that, according to her internal working model, a mother tends to be a more or less secure base for her child and thereby influences his sense of security. However, our results also suggest that fathers would more likely transmit « semantic models », mainly by language. This difference in transmission of attachment models between both parents points out the specificity of the father's role. It also raises the question of interactional differences and thus the question of each parent's specific contribution to the child's development.
