Abstract: Light rings are characterized by one or a very few latewood-cell layers, an indication of shortened growing seasons, and are particularly frequent in black spruce ( Picea mariana (Mill.) BSP) at the treeline in Québec. The construction of a light-ring chronology spanning the period AD 1398–1982 showed that the highest frequency ( 〉 25%) of light rings among 160 trees and krummholz occurred in 1593, 1620, 1634, 1784, 1816, 1817, 1853, 1969, and 1972. These diagnostic rings be a useful cross-dating tool for dendroecologists working with living and dead krummholz with a low-growth variability. About two-thirds of the 65 light-ring years coincide with years (or triads) of major volcanic eruptions. The climatic conditions (low temperature) occurring at the end of the growing season, in part induced by the climatic effect of volcanism, seem to initiate light rings.

Abstract: ABSTRACT PURPOSE: To study a paired-match comparison between refractive lens exchange with pseudophakic IOL implant (RLE) and Artisan phakic IOL for high hyperopia. METHODS: Nineteen eyes (12 patients, 20 to 41 years old) with an Artisan phakic IOL (Model 203: 1.00-D increment) for hyperopia from +2.75 to +9.25 D were matched to 19 eyes (15 patients, 26 to 46 yr) with hyperopia from +2.75 to +7.50 D, who had refractive lens exchange (pseudophakic IOL implantation; lenses: 0.50-D increment). Average paired-match difference was 1.13 D and 7.7 years of age. RESULTS: At 1 month after surgery, 84% of refractive lens exchange/pseudophakic IOL eyes and 94% of Artisan phakic IOL eyes had a spherical equivalent refraction within ±1.00 D of emmetropia; 58% and 68% of eyes, respectively, were within ±0.50 D (P=.97). No eye lost lines of best spectacle-corrected visual acuity (BSCVA) and no significant changes in BSCVA were found in any eye at 1 month after surgery (P=.17). The percentage of eyes with uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) of 20/40 or better improved from 79% to 89% of eyes at 1 to 2 months after phakic IOL; it remained at 89% to 82% of eyes from 1 to 2 months after refractive lens exchange/ pseudophakic IOL. The coefficient of correlation showed statistically better accuracy (intended vs. achieved refraction; P=.035) for the Artisan phakic IOL (R = 0.83) than for refractive lens exchange/ Pseudophakic IOL (R = 0.50). CONCLUSIONS: Spherical equivalent refraction outcome and BSCVA after surgery were similar for both procedures. The Artisan phakic IOL in carefully selected patients provided a better overall outcome for young patients with high hyperopia whose accommodation was preserved, as compared to refractive lens exchange. Abstract: ABSTRACT PURPOSE: To investigate the relationship between contrast sensitivity (CS), Zernike wavefront aberrations (WFA), and asphericity after laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) for myopia. METHODS: LASIK was performed using the Nidek EC-5000 excimer laser with custom aspheric transition zone (CATz) ablations. Total and high order (HO) WFA of 71 eyes (37 patients) undergoing LASIK in March 2003 were measured before and at 1 month postoperatively with the Nidek OPD-Scan aberrometer at a 4-mm pupil entrance; asphericity was measured at 6 mm (Q index). Preoperative and 1 to 3-month postoperative contrast sensitivity were evaluated with the Vector Vision CSV-1000 at 3, 6, 12, and 18 CPD; the Area Under the Log Contrast Sensitivity Function (AULCSF) was calculated. Uncorrected-visual acuity (UCVA) was evaluated. RESULTS: One month after LASIK, CS decreased significantly at 6 CPD and above (P 〈 .05), then returned to normal at 3 months (P=.33). Postoperative AULCSF correlated with patient age (P=.04) but not with total WFA (P=.13), HO WFA (P=.50), or asphericity (P=.22). Postoperative Logmar UCVA correlated with postoperative total and HO WFA (P 〈 .05). Postoperative total WFA correlated with spherical equivalent refraction (P 〈 .0001); HO WFA correlated with Strehl ratio (P=.004) and asphericity (P=.03). The HO WFA increase was 0.065 µm (P 〈 .05) and did not correlate with preoperative refraction (P=.40). Increase in asphericity correlated with corneal refractive change and was predicted by the parabolic Munnerlyn equation (P 〈 .0001). CONCLUSIONS: After LASIK, AULCSF was not dependent on WFA, but mainly on patient age. WFA results correlated well with postoperative spherical equivalent refraction, asphericity, and Strehl ratio. These conclusions support a published hypothesis that postoperative low amount of WFA does not completely fit contrast sensitivity measurements. [J Refract Surg 2004;20(suppl):S678-S684]

Abstract: BackgroundPopulation health studies often use existing databases that are not necessarily constituted for research purposes. The question arises as to whether different data sources such as in administrative health data (AHD) and self-report questionnaires are equivalent and lead to similar information. ObjectivesThe main objective of this study was to assess the level of agreement between self-reported medical conditions and medical diagnosis captured in AHD. A secondary objective was to identify predictors of agreement among medical conditions between the two data sources. Therefore, the purposes of the study were to explore the extent to which these two methods of commonly used public health data collection provide concordant records and identify the main predictors of statistical variations. MethodsData was extracted from CARTaGENE, a population-based cohort study in Québec, Canada, which was linked to the provincial health insurance records of the same individuals, namely the MED-ÉCHO database from the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ) and the fee-for-service billing records provided by the physician, for the time period 1998-2012. Agreement statistics (kappa coefficient) along with sensitivity, specificity and predictive positive value were calculated for 19 chronic conditions and 12 types of cancers. Logistic regressions were used to identify predictors of concordance between self-report and AHD from significant covariates (sex, age groups, education, region, income, heavy utilization of health care system and Charlson comorbidity index). ResultsAgreement between self-reported data and AHD across diseases ranged from kappa of 0.09 for chronic renal failure to 0.86 for type 2 diabetes. Sensitivity of self-reported data was higher than 50% for 14 out of the 31 medical conditions studied, especially for myocardial infarction (88.62%), breast cancer (86.28%), and diabetes (85.06%). Specificity was generally high with a minimum value of 89.70%. Lower concordance between data sources was observed for higher frequency of health care utilization and higher comorbidity scores. ConclusionOverall, there was moderate agreement between the two data sources but important variations were found depending on the type of disease. This suggests that CARTaGENE’s participants were generally able to correctly identify the kind of diseases they suffer from, with some exceptions. These results may help researchers choose adequate data sources according to specific study objectives. These results also suggest that Québec’s AHD seem to underestimate the prevalence of some chronic conditions, which might result in inaccurate estimates of morbidity with consequences for public health surveillance.

Abstract: Living, dead and subfossil trees of black spiruce (Picea mariina [Mill.] BSP were used to build a 1300-year chronology based on ring width and wood density. All density sariables (maximcum, minimum, earlywood and latewood densities) among the three types of trees were simlilar, whereas ring width was significantly Higher in liviing trees thani in deacd and subfossil trees. Correlition of the indexed series from liviing and dead trees and from dead and subfossil trees that grew during the samiie periods were higher for Maximum density (r = 0.70, 0.63) and mean latewood density (r = 0.65, 0.66) than for Minimum density (r = 0.16. 0.35 and ring with (r=0.15, 0.49). respctively. Maximum density and mean latewood density were significantly correlated with all temperature variables: mean annual (January-December) and growing season (May September) temperatures, sum of degree days and frost-free days. Accordingly, Maximum and latewood density in tree-rings of spruce stem at tree-linec can be conisidered as a function Of summner-temnperature distributions and different types of trees can be combined for the reconstruction of long-term climatic trends due to theii synchronous variations.
