Abstract: Diffusion of a new technology and its required infrastructure is a complex process involving various adaptive decision makers interacting with each other, and this is extremely true in diffusion of alternative fuel vehicles. The purpose of this paper is to explore the dynamics of alternative fuel vehicles/infrastructure diffusion through a case study about the diffusion of NGVs (natural gas vehicles) in Shanghai, China. Design/methodology/approach This paper first provides a case study of the adoption of NGVs in Shanghai; then the major infrastructure and economic indicators, obstacles in the market penetration process are analyzed. Finally, an agent‐based model is established to simulate the diffusion of NGVs in Shanghai. Findings The findings show that several factors limited the adoption of NGV in Shanghai. The initial distribution of refueling stations can be critical to determining whether the technology/infrastructure system survives to become mature and successful. Therefore, the strong support offered to consumers and equipment suppliers from government is important for the market penetration. These findings are also applicable to other alternative fuel vehicles such as hydrogen. Originality/value Little real‐world observations have been carried out on the dynamics of alternative fuel vehicles/infrastructure. The paper can enrich people's understanding about the dynamics of diffusion of alternative fuel vehicles/infrastructure and gives policy implications for initializing and keeping a successful demonstration project.

Abstract: This study assessed the effects of pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMF) in a rat model of senile osteoporosis and the underlying molecular events. 24‐month‐old male Sprague–Dawley (SD) rats were randomly divided into control and PEMF groups ( n  = 8 per group) using a random digit table, while 3‐month‐old male SD rats were set as the young‐age control group. Rats in the PEMF group were treated by PEMF for 40 min/day for 5 days/week. Bone mineral density/microarchitecture, level of serum bone‐specific alkaline phosphatase (BALP), tartrate‐resistant acid phosphatase 5b (TRACP5b), and Wnt/β‐catenin signaling genes in rat bone marrow cells were then analyzed. The 12‐week PEMF intervention showed a significant effect on inhibition of age‐induced bone density loss and deterioration of trabecular bone structures in the PEMF group rats versus control rats, that is, the treatment enhanced bone mineral density of the proximal femoral metaphysis and the fifth lumbar (L5) vertebral body and improved the proximal tibia and L4 vertebral body parameters using bone histomorphometry analysis. Furthermore, the BALP level in the bones was significantly increased, but the TRACP5b level was reduced in the PEMF group of rats versus control rats. PEMF also dramatically upregulated expression of Wnt3a, LRP5, β‐catenin, and Runx2 but downregulated PPAR‐γ expression in the aged rats. The results demonstrated that PEMF could prevent bone loss and architectural deterioration due to the improvement of bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cell differentiation and proliferation abilities and activating the Wnt signaling pathway. Future clinical studies are needed to validate these findings. © 2022 Bioelectromagnetics Society.

    In: International Wound Journal, Wiley, Vol. 19, No. 3 ( 2022-03), p. 538-552
Abstract: Current low‐temperature plasma (LTP) devices essentially use a rare gas source with a short working distance (8 to 20 mm), low gas flow rate (0.12 to 0.3 m 3 /h), and small effective treatment area (1‐5 cm 2 ), limiting the applications for which LTP can be utilised in clinical therapy. In the present study, a novel type of LTP equipment was developed, having the advantages of a free gas source (surrounding air), long working distance (8 cm), high gas flow rate (10 m 3 /h), large effective treatment area (20 cm 2 ), and producing an abundance of active substances (NOγ, OH, N 2 , and O), effectively addressing the shortcomings of current LTP devices. Furthermore, it has been verified that the novel LTP device displays therapeutic efficacy in terms of acceleration of wound healing in normal and Type I diabetic rats, with enhanced wound kinetics, rate of condensation of wound area, and recovery ratio. Cellular and molecular analysis indicated that LTP treatment significantly reduced inflammation and enhanced re‐epithelialization, fibroblast proliferation, deposition of collagen, neovascularization, and expression of TGF‐β, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and catalase in Type I diabetic rats. In conclusion, the novel LTP device provides a convenient and efficient tool for the treatment of clinical wounds.

Abstract: Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women. Resveratrol, a naturally occurring phytochemical, shows great promise in developing novel anti-cancer therapies. This study hypothesized that the mitochondria-targeted delivery of resveratrol would increase its potency and induce mitochondria-mediated apoptosis. The targeted delivery of resveratrol was achieved by conjugating resveratrol to triphenylphosphonium (TPP). The anti-cancer effects of TPP-resveratrol were studied in the murine breast cancer 4T1 and the human breast cancer MDA-MB-231 cell lines. Flow cytometry was used to study apoptosis induction, cell cycle arrest, and mitochondrial membrane potential loss. The morphological changes in the mitochondria in MDA-MB-231 cells after TPP-resveratrol treatments were examined using transmission electron microscopy. Moreover, the changes in MDA-MB-231 cell metabolism after resveratrol and TPP-resveratrol treatments were studied using metabolomic analysis. We demonstrate that TPP-resveratrol significantly improved cytotoxicity in 4T1 cells and MDA-MB-231 cells by inducing apoptosis and mitochondrial membrane potential loss. Swollen and vacuolated mitochondria were observed after the TPP-resveratrol treatment. Meanwhile, TPP-resveratrol treatment down-regulated amino acid and energy metabolism and caused the dysfunction of purine and pyrimidine metabolism. Our results provide evidence supporting the targeted delivery of resveratrol to mitochondria and suggest that TPP-resveratrol may be an effective agent for breast cancer treatment.
