Abstract:
Big Data in Biology: No longer a problem! Since the beginning of the Omics era the amount of biological data generated has risen steadily due to the massive application of high‐throughput technologies such as genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics and sensor technologies [2]. The two new data infrastructures in Germany, GFBio and de.NBI, have been established to support researchers in all disciplines in the life sciences. GFBio is a national research data infrastructure whose aim is to promote the exchange and efficient reuse of complex data in the field of life sciences. de.NBI is a national research data infrastructure for the structured and long‐term provision of biological data resources and bioinformatic tools to improve data processing and to ensure standardized data analyses. In order to maintain these expertise on an international level, the German biological science community needs long‐term funding and promotion of digital innovations and developments, which has been lacking so far.
