Abstract: To enhance malaria elimination, Vietnam adopted a Reactive Surveillance and Response (RASR) Strategy in which malaria case notification and investigation must be completed within 2 days followed by a focus investigation within 7 days. The nationwide performance of Vietnam’s RASR strategy has yet to be evaluated. This study aims to evaluate the performance and feasibility of RASR in Vietnam, thereby providing recommendations for improved RASR. Methods To assess malaria RASR in Vietnam, a mixed-methods study of (1) secondary data analysis of nationwide malaria case-based dataset from 2017 to 2021; (2) a quantitative survey, and (3) qualitative in-depth interviews and focus group discussions administered to central, provincial and district level stakeholders/staff and to the commune and community level front line health services providers was conducted. Results In Vietnam, there are guidelines and procedures for implementation of each step of RASR. The completeness of case notification on the reported monthly aggregated data was very high in both the paper-based (12,463/12,498, 99.7% in 2017–2020) and electronic reporting systems (467/467, 100% in 2021 when electronic reporting was introduced); however, there were delays in notification while using the paper-based system (timely notification—7,978/12,498, 63.8%). In 2021, the completeness (453/467, 97.0%) and timeliness (371/467, 79.4%) of case investigation were found to be high. Reactive case detection was the major focus investigation response, with fever screening achievement of 88.6% (11,481 / 12,965) and 88.5% (11,471 / 12,965) among index case and neighbouring household members, respectively. Conclusions Overall, there was policy commitment for implementation of RASR in Vietnam. The completeness and timeliness of case notification and case investigation were high and improved after the introduction of the electronic reporting system. More evidence is required for reactive case detection in defining the screening area or population.

Abstract: Metal-free catalysts are always desirable owing to their low cost and sustainable nature. In this report, we have synthesized a biomass-based metal-free electrocatalyst for glucose detection. The synthesis process includes two steps: (i) furfuryl alcohol (FA) polymerization into poly(furfuryl alcohol) (PFA) and (ii) covalent grafting of PFA onto the surface of CNTs via Diels–Alder (DA) reaction. Both the processes were performed in one pot using a choline chloride-based deep eutectic solvent (DES), which played an important role to achieve the maximum loading of PFA onto the CNT surface under ultra-sonication conditions. XRD, TGA, FT-IR, Raman spectroscopy, and SEM-EDX analytical results collectively confirmed the successful grafting of PFA. It was observed that the nanocomposites having covalent interactions between the CNTs and PFA exhibited better performance than their analogous and previously reported non-metal electrocatalysts for the electrocatalytic detection of glucose. These outcomes are important for designing and developing low cost metal-free electrodes by utilizing sustainable sources.

Abstract: In this study, we measured the activity concentrations of Cs-137 and Sr-90 in surface seawater and surface sediments at the Tra Co, Bach Long Vi, and Ky Anh locations in the Gulf of Tonkin, Vietnam, from December 2018 to October 2019. The average activity at the selected locations was 1.22, 1.43, and 1.33 Bq/m 3 for Cs-137 and 0.88, 1.17, and 1.09 Bq/m 3 for Sr-90 in surface seawater samples and 0.74, 1.01, and 0.81 Bq/kg dry for Cs-137 and 0.49, 0.49, and 0.43 Bq/kg dry for Sr-90 in sediment samples. The ratio of the average activity concentration (Cs-137/Sr-90) in the surface seawater was 1.42, 1.22, and 1.22 at the Tra Co, Bach Long Vi, and Ky Anh locations, respectively. These are somewhat low compared to the global ratios (1.6 and 1.8). Meanwhile, Cs-137/Sr-90 ratios in the sediment samples at the selected locations were 1.51, 2.06, and 1.88, respectively, which is equal to or greater than the corresponding value for global sedimentation according to the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR). Correlations between Sr-90, Cs-137, and organic carbon content were detected in this study. The results showed that Cs-137 has a high correlation with the organic carbon content in sediment, while Sr-90 has a low correlation.

Abstract: Objective: This study aims to observe the value of the dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) technique in the assessment of primary lung cancer. Compare the difference in density of lung tumors on the true non-contrast (TNC) and virtual non-contrast (VNC) images. Investigate the iodine concentration value of lung tumors in differentiating malignant and benign lesions as well as adenocarcinoma and squamous carcinoma in lung cancer. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional descriptive study in 42 patients with solitary pulmonary nodules proved by pathology underwent doublephase enhanced CT scan at the Diagnostic Imaging Center of K Hospital, Hanoi. Process dual-energy CT data into virtual monoenergetic and virtual non-contrast images, comparing with true non-contrast images. Compare the iodine concentration of malignant and benign lesions, adenocarcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma lung cancer. The slope rate was calculated from the spectral curve. Patients were divided into an inflammatory group, a malignant group, and a tuberculosis group. The Kruskal–Wallis test and Nemenyi test were performed to compare quantitative parameters among the three groups. Results: The study comprised 42 patients (34 males). The mean age of patients was 56 ±11. 23/42 right lung tumors (accounted for about 55%), 13/33 left lung tumors (about 40%). Pathological results showed that 73.8% (31/42) of the lesions were malignant, and 26.2% were benign. The density of lung tumors on the true non-contrast (TNC) and virtual noncontrast (VNC) images is 43,81 ± 10,90 and 43,32 ± 11,15 HU (p=0,147). The contrast-noise ratio of lung tumors has the highest value in the virtual monochrome image at 65 keV. The iodine concentration of malignant tumors was 0,37±0,15mg/ml, higher than benign lesions. The normalized iodine concentration (nIC) of lung tumors can differentiate malignant from benign lesions with an area under the curve of 0,748, with a best cut-off point of 0,27 mg/ml having a sensitivity is 74,2%, specificity of 81,8%. The normalized iodine concentration (nIC) of lung tumors can also differentiate adenocarcinoma from squamous cell carcinoma with an area under the curve of 0,835, with a best cut-off point of 0,36 mg/ml having a sensitivity is 76,5%, specificity of 100%. The mean slope rate for the inflammatory group was 2,51 ± 0,25, significantly higher than these parameters for the malignant group (p 〈 0.05), and the parameters for the malignant group were significantly higher than the tuberculosis group (p 〈 0.05). Conclusion: Virtual non-contrast images can replace the role of true non-contrast images. In virtual monoenergetic, the 65 keV sequence has the best Contrast to Noise Ratio (CNR). Quantitative analysis of iodine concentration in lung tumors can help differentiate malignant and benign lung lesions, adenocarcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma. HU slope rate showed statistically significant differences, which is helpful in the differential diagnosis among inflammatory, malignant, and tuberculosis lesions.

Abstract: Abstract Introduction: In recent years, cancer in the oral cavity has been a fairly common disease in Vietnam. The treatment of this pathology requires the coordination of many different specialties such as wide resection of the tumor, reconstructive surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy. Reconstruction of post-excision tumors in the oral cavity is always a challenge with the surgeon. The report aims to provide outcomes and share our chimeric ALT flap experience to cover defects after oral cancer resection. Patients and Methods: Cross-sectional study on 18 patients who had reconstruction with free flap after wide resection cancer's tumor in the oral cavity. Research randomly selected for age and gender. The results evaluate the flap survival rate, the degree of coverage, function, and aesthetics after surgery, the 5-year survival rates. Results: 18 patients had the ratio of male/female: 14/4; age ranged from 39 to 62 years old. Pathology's results of 15/18 patients were squamous cell carcinoma; 3/18 is adenoma mucoepidermoid carcinoma. The proportion of patients having chemotherapy before surgery is 4/18, radiation before surgery is 6/18. 100% flap survival rate is 16/18; Partial necrosis of the flap 2/18. 18/18 patients had radiation therapy after surgery. The 5 – years survival rate to the end of the study was 11/18. Conclusion: Using chimeric ALT flap to cover the defect after cancer tumor removal in the oral cavity is an optimal choice with many advantages: the ability to cover a wide defect so it can be cut broadly, preserving the maximum function of the oral, minimizing morbidity at the donor site. However, the surgery needs teamwork of highly trained, multi-specialist coordination and modern equipment. Keywords: Chimeric ALT flap, oral cavity cancer, squamous cell carcinoma.

Abstract: This study was conducted at the Maize Research Instituteof Vietnam using 24 maize hybrids, identified as STM1 to STM24, at five different salt concentrations, which were 0, 50, 100, 150, and 200 mM NaCl. After seven days of germination at room temperature, seedlings were transplanted to nutrient-rich solutions salinized with salt. 17 day-old seedlings were then harvested to calculate their growth parameters of the day to seedlings fully wilt and degradation, root and shoot length, seedling dry matter production, and content. As the study results show, salt stress caused the reduction of plant growth in all hybrids, however, the STM10 and STM21 varieties showed the best salt tolerance, while STM17 and STM18 presented most salt-sensitive. The analyzed results for Na+ and K+ showed that among the hybrids, STM21 had lower Na+ and higher K+ contents in both roots and shoots of the seedlings than others.
