Kurzfassung: For the modelling of gasification processes, several models have been developed over the years. It is remarked that gasification calculation models of very high complexity entail some complications. Therefore, simpler mathematical representations of gasification characteristics and process behavior are required as a first step in addressing such systems. The preliminary calculation simplicity is needed form two perspectives: First – the pre-sizing of gasification installations, and second – the estimation of experimental or functional results. For this kind of topics, an adequate simplified model should be defined. Further, to validate the results it will be necessary to use complex calculation models. The model proposed in this paper addresses gasification with distributive air in the air distribution current, considering general concurrent flow of air fuel. Previous successful investigations, conducted by the present research team, are taken into account within model definition stages. Thus, the work presented here provides useful advances in the field of mathematical modeling of gasification processes. The originality of the model consists in its easy computational accessibility, which allows the approach of technological optimizations, such as the variation of excess air and fuel composition.

Kurzfassung: Management of Crohn’s disease (CD) based on symptom control is a tale of the past as new treatment strategies aim toward a “treat to target” concept and to a patient-tailored approach. Defining treatment goals and assessing therapeutic success have been in the center of IBD research in the past years. Clinical remission and mucosal healing are well-established treatment goals by current recommendations, although prospective data is required to determine whether achieving these targets is enough to alter disease natural course. Furthermore, there is no standard in assessing therapeutic success. Low relapse and hospitalization rates, as well as a low need of surgery are indicators of a successful treatment. Close monitoring is part of the new therapeutic strategy. Monitoring tools are numerous, comprising clinical, biological, endoscopic and imaging scores or parameters but are far from being perfect. The traditional strategy of managing CD patients based on clinical symptoms and response to treatment did not improve the long-term outcomes. Clinical activity scores are frequently used in clinical trials and daily practice, but their use alone is not an accurate measure of inflammation. Endoscopic remission is associated with a lower risk of complications and a better long-term prognostic. Several guidelines include recommendations regarding surveillance endoscopy, but there is an open debate regarding the follow-up intervals. Cross-sectional imaging techniques play a complementary role in assessing transmural inflammation and in identifying extra-intestinal complications of CD and should be used in conjunction with endoscopy. Therapeutic drug monitoring is essential in assessing loss of response and making therapeutic decisions, although firm recommendations are not implemented into daily practice. Extraintestinal manifestations are often disregarded when discussing monitoring protocols. There is no current guideline indication for extraintestinal manifestations monitoring during remission periods.

Kurzfassung: Corticosteroids have an important role in induction of remission in inflammatory bowel disease, but they are not an indicated for maintenance treatment as they are associated with many side effects. Despite new effi cient therapeutic options for maintaining remission, there is an excess in prescribing steroids in inflammatory bowel disease. Corticosteroid use was evaluated in international cohorts given that steroid free remission and avoiding serious side-effects of corticosteroids is a desirable goal. We discuss the role and the evidences on a secure web-based steroid assessment tool (SAT) which can be used as an instrument of evaluation of corticosteroid use, a quality indicator in inflammatory bowel disease.

Kurzfassung: Introduction: In inflammatory bowel disease uncontrolled inflammation may play a role in the early progression of systemic atheromatosis with increased cardiovascular risk. Endothelial dysfunction is mediated by pro-inflammatory cytokines but also by an increased level of CRP which is involved in the expression of adhesion molecules and atheroma plaque rupture. Tailored treatment with better control of the ulcerative colitis and endoscopic healing might result in decrease risk of atherothrombotic events. Aim: We decided to use a well-established method (vascular Doppler ultrasound with media-intimate index measurement) to detect an increased incidence of endothelial lesions as predictors of early atheromatosis in patients with ulcerative colitis treated with biological or conventional therapy. Material and methods: We prospectively analyzed 25 patients with RCUH with a mean age of 40 years, 16 with biological treatment. The Student t test, the Mann Whitney U test and the ANOVA test were used to compare continuous variables. Results: A discriminant analysis was performed with the presence of atheroma plaque as a dependent variable and several predictor variables, such as age, triglycerides, cholesterol of patients with ulcerative colitis. Univariate ANOVA analyzes revealed that the presence or absence of atheroma plaque differs in the variables predicting the age, INR and ecoIMT of patients with ulcerative colitis (in the age of patients (F = 8.511, degrees of freedom = 11, p = 0.014) Patients ‚INR (F = 50,437, degrees of freedom = 11, p = 0.001) and Patients’ ecoIMT (F = 7,398, degrees of freedom = 11, p = 0.020) In another analysis of discriminatory function s -introduced the predictor variables specific to measuring the evolution of ulcerative colitis, respectively Mayo and Mayo E (age (F = 0.8511, degrees of freedom = 11, p = 0.014), INR (F = 50.437, degrees of freedom = 11, p = 0.001), ecoIMT (F = 7.398, df = 11, p = 0.020) and Mayo (F = 14.885, degrees of freedom = 11, p = 0.003). Conclusions: Age, endoscopic activity, and INR were correlated with predictive ultrasound changes for atheromatosis. Strengths are the prospective nature of the study and weaknesses are the limited number of patients and the fact that most patients were in remission and treated with biologicals, which could create bias in the sense of reducing the atherosclerotic risk directly correlated with active inflammation.

Kurzfassung: Romania is in a full process of development in regards to producing energy from renewable sources. Successes have been recorded in the wind and hydro sectors, however, challenges are still to be solved in the field of biofuels. In previous years, research and investments targeting facilities that make use of a larger range of renewable fuels and their respective incineration technologies were carried out. The experience thus gained allows for a redefinition of the range of fuels which can constitute cost-worthy power producing solutions. Defining the renewable fuels of the future is of utmost importance for a country with a significant agricultural potential, but also with a temperate climate. After eliminating some cultures specific to warmer climates and not taking into account the quantity/price ratio, the current paper highlights a synthetic approach (a matrix) to the fuels of the future applicable to the power sector in Romania. At the definition base for the matrix also stands data gained from the experience of the researchers in the respective domain.

Kurzfassung: The experimental research has highlighted the variety of possibilities of combustion of animal fat from bovine and swine mixed with liquid hydrocarbons. Previous research has established that the upper limit for an efficient combustion was 30 %. For a perfect mixing, the lower temperature limit was set to 40 °C. In the fuel laboratory, at the department TMETF was determined the viscosity of the mixtures for different proportions. The values obtained for various concentrations and preheating temperatures were close to the values for liquid hydrocarbons. The experimental researches have studied the combustion of the mixture using a mechanically spraying burner with constant pressure between 14 and 18 bar. The aspiration of the mixture is done from a specially designed tank; this tank is equipped with an electric heater, in order to maintain the mixture at a constant temperature between 40 °C to 50 °C. After that, the burner heats again the mixture with an integrated heating device up to 75 °C. The burner is also equipped with an air blower, pump and a calibrated nozzle. The combustion resulted from the experimental boiler with a power rated to 55 kW were monitored with a thermal vision camera and an exhaust gas analyser. This research has demonstrated the viability of using this type of mixtures in energetic burning equipment designed for liquid hydrocarbons.

Kurzfassung: Introduction: Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are accompanied by an early and accelerated atherosclerotic process. Previous studies showed that Doppler ultrasonography and intima media thickness (IMT) is a reliable marker for early atherosclerosis diagnosis. The aim of our study was to evaluate the presence of early atherosclerosis in a group of subjects with inflammatory bowel diseases, using Doppler ultrasonography and intima-media thickness (IMT) as a marker of subclinical atherosclerosis. Methods: A case-control study was conducted on 61 patients with inflammatory bowel disease and 19 healthy individuals. The included patients had an established IBD diagnosis, based on clinical, endoscopic, and histological criteria for at least 12 months. Results: In our study echo IMT was not significantly higher in IBD patients than in matched healthy controls. We found no difference between Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis patients or between conventional or biologic treatment regarding the echo IMT. Severity of the disease and its duration were predictors of an increased IMT. We found that disease activity (measured by the endoscopic scores and CRP) correlates with higher values of echo IMT. Also the presence of anemia reached statistical significance and was correlated with increased echo IMT in the biologic treatment group. Conclusions: In our study we found an increased echo IMT in IBD patients versus control, but the values did not reach statistical significance. We found no difference between Crohn’s disease and UC, conventional or biologic treatment. Age and duration of disease were corelated with increased IMT. Disease that was not controlled (high endoscopic, clinical and biological markers of activity) was correlated with increased echo IMT. The limitations of our study are that in our patients therapy was started early in the course of the disease and that the majority of the patients were in remission when echography was made. Further studies are necessary to evaluate factors correlated with early atherosclerosis in IBD and how echo IMT can be used as a tool in the proactive evaluation of these patients.

Kurzfassung: The experimental investigations carried out within the present research focus on a simple gasification technology dedicated to biofuels conversion according to the Lurgi procedure. Specifically, an installation with a fixed grill and a homogeneous distribution of the air inlet over the combustion space are considered. In order to provide a thorough background for the experimental research, this paper presents first the challenges related to the air distribution. If for coal gasification the difficulty of the homogeneous penetration of the air inlet within the whole combustion volume is balanced by the possibility of the direct emission of CO valorization, for biomass gasification this factor becomes fundamental. The original contribution of the technology introduced in this paper assumes an improved combustion process for Lurgi-type gas generators. The experimental installation employed has a particular design, enabling a homogeneous distribution of the air inlet over the entire combustion zone, up to the top of the embers layer. This allows achieving a maximum CO 2 content in the flue gas flux, effectively reducing it inside the embers bed. The high calorific value of biofuels used favors developing an efficient combustion process, occurring at high temperatures. Thus, the reduction process of the CO 2 is self-controlled. The experimental installation operates at a slow fuel rate, with discontinued supply and precise airflow control. The quality of the gas obtained is evaluated based on the resulting open flame, analyzing its composition.
