Abstract: 719 Background: Patients with locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) undergo surgery at 6-8 weeks after neoadjuvant chemoradiation based on standard protocol. However, the optimal time to undergo surgery remains debatable. The goal of this study was to identify associations between time to surgery and additional variables with overall survival (OS) and recurrence rates in LARC patients. Methods: A retrospective chart review was conducted for 80 LARC patients with T3 or node positive disease, who have undergone neoadjuvant chemoradiation and surgery at St. Michael’s Hospital from January 1st 2005-December 31st 2015. Patients were divided into 4 groups based on time to surgery: 4-6 weeks (group 1), 6-8 weeks (group 2), 8-10 weeks (group 3), and 〉 10 weeks (group 4). Cox proportional hazards model was used to find associations with recurrence and OS. Results: Of the 80 patients, 67.5% (n = 54) were male and 32.5% (n = 26) were female. Median age at diagnosis was 59 years (range, 28-80 years). Median follow-up was 4.84 years. Recurrence occurred in 29% (n = 23) of patients. Incidence of death was 11% (n = 9). Pathologic complete response (pCR) was achieved in 15% (n = 12) of patients. Statin use during chemoradiation was prevalent in 25% (n = 20) of patients. Compared to group 1, patients in group 2 had a 14% reduction in the risk of recurrence (hazard ratio (HR): 0.86, 95% CI: 0.252.91); group 3 had a 69% reduction (HR: 0.31, 95% CI: 0.081.22) and group 4 had a 55% reduction (HR: 0.45, 95% CI: 0.073.08). There was no statistically significant difference in OS between the 4 groups. Furthermore, patients who took statins during chemoradiation had improved OS (HR: 5.42, 95% CI: 39.27.48, p 〈 0.019) with no difference in pCR rate. Conclusions: This study shows that surgery at 8-10 weeks after chemoradiation offers the best disease-free survival outcome. It also highlights a mortality benefit conferred by statin use during chemoradiation. This could be attributed to the radiosensitizing effects of statins, which allow tumor stem cells to undergo enhanced autophagy. Further prospective studies are warranted to investigate this therapeutic benefit.

Abstract: Background: Poor vision in childhood affects performance in school and has a significant impact on future life of child in terms of education and development. Current study aims at detecting the magnitude and patterns of refractive errors with amblyopia screening so that effective measures can be planned at the right time to minimize the burden. Methods: Hospital based cross sectional study conducted on 200 children between 5-15 years attending the ophthalmology OPD of a tertiary health care centre, Puducherry. Interpretation and data analysis were done by SPSS software version 13.0.Results: Mean age of presentation was 9 years. Female to male ratio in the present study was 1.3:1. Positive family history was noted among 48 children suggesting strong impact of genetic factor in refractive errors. Among 20 children who were already on spectacle correction, the most common refractive error was compound myopic astigmatism. Among 30 children who were diagnosed with amblyopia, 8 children below 8 years of age had improved vision on 1 month follow up of post treatment with spectacles and occlusion therapy and 22 children did not show improvement suggesting amblyopia can be corrected if intervention was instituted before the age of 8 years. Conclusions:Refractive errors with or without amblyopia is a significant cause of childhood visual impairment. Though it is a hospital-based study, the results were in consistent with previously published hospital and population based study. This study also expected to serve as a tool for primary health care physicians to have an overview of magnitude and patterns of refractive errors in children presenting to hospital since refractive error is a significant public health problem worldwide. Background: Poor vision in childhood affects performance in school and has a significant impact on future life of child in terms of education and development. Abstract: The era of smart homes wouldn’t be complete without intelligent refrigerators. Thus we have proposed an idea for detecting the food kept in the refrigerator and alerting the user on their spoilage which involves all the processes of ML and IoT. In places where large stocks of food are stored, manual maintenance is very hard and also when they are transported to long distant places from the cultivated lands to the end-users, they get spoiled due to lack of governance. The existing systems have provided a solution for this and we decided to give this facility for the working women who have very little time to do their household. This system helps in preventing other items in the refrigerator from the fungal attack caused by the affected ones. The solutions provided by the existing systems recommend sensors to detect the food items. Each food item might need a different sensor and hence this might lead to a lot of hardware components to be added to the refrigerator. Thus our system uses ML prediction methods like image processing. Finally, the notification of the spoiled food is intimated to the user by displaying the message in the refrigerator door.

Abstract: We come across hospitals and non-profit organizations that care for people with paralysis who have had all or partof their body incapacitated by the paralysis attack. Due to a lack of motor control by their brain, these individualsare typically unable to communicate their requirements because they are neither able to speak clearly nor use signlanguage. In such a circumstance, we suggest a system that enables a disabled person to display a message overthe liquid crystal display (LCD) screen by merely moving any part of his or her body that is capable of motion. Thissolution also addresses the circumstance where the patient is alone and no one is available to care for him or her, sending an Internet of things (IoT) message instead of a short messaging service (SMS).The system operates by interpreting the user part’s tilt direction. By grasping the device in the fingers of the movinghand, the device’s operation is demonstrated. To communicate a message, the user only needs to tilt the gadgetat a specific angle. The message is conveyed differently depending on the way the gadget is tilted. Here, thestatistics of motion are measured using an accelerometer. This information is then transmitted to a microcontroller. The microcontroller analyzes the data and displays the specific message in accordance with the input received. Theassociated message is now shown on the LCD screen by the microcontroller. As soon as it receives a motion signalfrom the accelerometer, it also emits a siren and a message. If no one was available to respond to the message onthe LCD, then the patient might opt to tilt the device for an additional period of time, which would cause an SMSto be sent via IoT to the patient’s registered caretaker with the message the patient wishes to communicate.

Abstract: Supplementation of water for irrigation in needed in south India due to uncertainty of monsoon rainfall. This paper proposes a support system to manage the irrigation system based on the information provided by humidity, temperature, soil moisture and weather information. The temperature, humidity and soil moisture data were collected by sensors. The proposed ANFIS based system consists of N inputs and a single output which determines the irrigation time needed for the crop. The experimentation is carried out using real time data collected from the region of VALLAM, located near THANJAVUR. The result helps in determining the time for irrigation which helps in increasing the yield of the crop.
