Abstract: The influence of thermal annealing on the surface morphologies and structural characteristics of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanopowders synthesized via the solution immersion method for triboelectric nanogenerator applications is reported in this paper. The ZnO nanopowders were thermally treated at different temperatures of annealing in the ranges between 300°C to 700°C for 1 hour, and their surface morphologies and structural properties were studied using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The ZnO nanopowders have a polycrystalline, hexagonal wurtzite structure and are composed of ZnO nanoparticles and hexagonal nanorods. ZnO based tribolectric nanogenerators were fabricated with these nanopowders and their performance was assessed in terms of the output voltage. It is found that the ZnO based triboelectric nanogenerator fabricated with ZnO nanopowders annealed at 500°C has superior performance compared with the other nanogenerators, with an average output voltage of 1.95 V. This corresponds to a fourfold increase in output voltage relative to that of the ZnO based triboelectric nanogenerator fabricated with as-deposited ZnO nanopowders. In conclusion, thermal annealing significantly influences particle size and crystallinity of ZnO nanopowders, which in turn, influences the output voltage of ZnO based triboelectric nanogenerators.

Abstract: Generally, dye sensitizers make use of inorganic elements such as ruthenium or osmium. However, these elements were toxic and hard to be produced due to its rarity. Alternatively, organic and natural sensitizer derived from various organic sources were studied. In this research, a natural dye which is chlorophyll b (Chl-b) extracted from Mitragyna Speciosa or ketum leaf pigment is used as the dye sensitizer. The geometry, optical properties and electronic properties were observed by the computational method using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) with B3LYP/6-31G with Gaussian-03 and Gaussview-03 software. Here, properties of bulk Chl-b were firstly obtained from databank as a control experiment. It was to be compared with the properties of Chl-b extracted using water as solvent. It can be observed that, UV-Vis of Chl-b showed peak absorbance at 430 nm at the blue light region of the visible light. The highest occupy molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) were calculated by DFT ground state level. Bandgap of Chl-b without and with water extraction are 2.12 eV and 2.10 eV respectively, while excitation state of LUMO to conduction band are 1.21 eV and 1.27 eV respectively. It shows that the bandgap is lower when extracted using water as the solvent. Therefore, water extracted Chl-b tends to give a better result for HOMO/LUMO energy and voltage open circuit, Voc, HOMO and LUMO energy resulted in higher energy than the bulk Chl-b in Mitragyna leaves. This lower bandgap is attributed to the addition of electrons contents in the extracted molecules which is beneficial for dye-sensitize solar cells, DSSC.

Abstract: Functional electrical stimulation (FES) has been widely used to treat spinal cord injury (SCI) patients. Many research studies employ a closed-loop FES system to monitor the stimulated muscle response and provide a precise amount of charge to the muscle. However, most closed-loop FES devices perform poorly and sometimes fail when muscle nonlinearity effects such as fatigue, time delay response, stiffness, spasticity, and subject change happen. The poor performance of the closed-loop FES device is mainly due to discrepancies in the feedback control algorithms. Most of the existing feedback control algorithms were not designed to adapt to new changes in patients with different nonlinearity effects, resulting in early muscle fatigue. Therefore, this research proposes an adaptive sliding mode (SM) feedback control algorithm that could adapt and fine-tune internal control settings in real-time according to the current subject’s nonlinear and time-varying muscle response during the rehabilitation (knee extension) exercise. The adaptive SM feedback controller consists mainly of system identification, direct torque control, and tunable feedback control settings. Employing the system identification unit in the feedback control algorithm enables real-time self-tuning and adjusting of the SM internal control settings according to the current patient’s condition. Initially, the patient’s knee trajectory response was identified by extracting meaningful information, which included time delay, rise time, overshoot, and steady-state error. The extracted information was used to fine-tune and update the internal SM control settings. Finally, the performance of the proposed adaptive SM feedback control algorithm in terms of system response time, stability, and rehabilitation time was analysed using a nonlinear knee model. The findings from the simulation results indicate that the adaptive SM feedback controller demonstrated the best control performance in accurately tracking the desired knee angle movement by having faster response times, smaller overshoots, and lower steady-state errors when compared with the conventional SM across four reference angle settings (20°, 30°, 40°, and 76°). The adaptive feedback SM controller was also observed to compensate for muscle nonlinearities, including fatigue, stiffness, spasticity, time delay, and other disturbances.

Abstract: This study fabricated tantalum (Ta)-doped titanium dioxide with a unique nanorod-assembled actinomorphic-flower-like microsphere structured film. The Ta-doped TiO2 actinomorphic-flower-like microsphere (TAFM) was fabricated via the solution immersion method in a Schott bottle with a home-made improvised clamp. The samples were characterised using FESEM, HRTEM, XRD, Raman, XPS, and Hall effect measurements for their structural and electrical properties. Compared to the undoped sample, the rutile-phased TAFM sample had finer nanorods with an average 42 nm diameter assembled to form microsphere-like structures. It also had higher oxygen vacancy sites, electron concentration, and mobility. In addition, a reversed double-beam photoacoustic spectroscopy measurement was performed for TAFM, revealing that the sample had a high electron trap density of up to 2.5 μmolg−1. The TAFM showed promising results when employed as the resistive-type sensing film for a humidity sensor, with the highest sensor response of 53,909% obtained at 3 at.% Ta doping. Adding rGO to 3 at.% TAFM further improved the sensor response to 232,152%.

Abstract: peech is the utmost communication medium for human beings which conveys rich and valuable information such as accent, gender, emotion and unique identity. Therefore, automatic speaker recognition can be developed based on unique characteristics of one’s speech and utilized for applications such as voice dialing, online banking, and telephone shopping to verify the identity of its users. However, retrieving salient features which are capable of identifying speakers is a challenging problem in speech recognition systems since speech contains abundant information. In this study, a total of 438 audio data obtained from speakers uttering speech in text-independent context is proposed using speech data elicited from three Malay male speakers. The performance of two popularly used feature extraction techniques namely, linear prediction coefficients (LPC) and Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC) were compared using discriminant analysis model. Although both features yielded impressive outcomes, the MFCC features surpassed that of LPC by achieving a higher accuracy rate of 99.09%, which was 4.34% higher than the latter.

Abstract: Gender discrimination and awareness are essentially practiced in social, education, workplace, and economic sectors across the globe. A person manifests this attribute naturally in gait, body gesture, facial, including speech. For that reason, automatic gender recognition (AGR) has become an interesting sub-topic in speech recognition systems that can be found in many speech technology applications. However, retrieving salient gender-related information from a speech signal is a challenging problem since speech contains abundant information apart from gender. The paper intends to compare the performance of human vocal tract-based model i.e., linear prediction coefficients (LPC) and human auditory-based model i.e., Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC) which are popularly used in other speech recognition tasks by experimentation of optimal feature parameters and classifier’s parameters. The audio data used in this study was obtained from 93 speakers uttering selected words with different vowels. The two feature vectors were tested using two classification algorithms namely, discriminant analysis (DA) and artificial neural network (ANN). Although the experimental results were promising using both feature parameters, the best overall accuracy rate of 97.07% was recorded using MFCC-ANN techniques with almost equal performance for male and female classes.

Abstract: The effect of thickness of aluminium doped zinc oxide (AZO), doping concentration of Aluminium as well as the annealing temperature to the fabrication of AZO photoconductor sensor is the main focused of this research. Silvaco TCAD tool is used to fabricate the AZO photoconductor sensor and to obtain the electrical characteristics of the device by using its simulation software. The device performance was investigated with various thicknesses of AZO film, annealing temperatures and different Al doping concentration. The Al doping was varied 1×1017 cm −3 , 1×1019 cm −3 and 1×1021 cm −3 , the thickness was varied 0.2 nm, 1.0 nm and 1.2 nm and the temperature was varied from 300°C, 500°C and 700°C. The electrical properties of AZO photodetector were characterized using current voltage (I-V) measurement system respectively. The result shows that by changing the thicknesses of aluminium doped zinc oxide (AZO), and the doping concentration of aluminium in the zinc oxide have greatly improved the electrical characteristics as well as the electrical performances of the photoconductor sensor. Indeed, the post fabrication and simulation process using simulation tools is helpful for the determination of the parameters during the later process of the real device fabrication.
