Abstract:
Titanium and its alloys are widely used for metallic surgical implants, such as artificial hip joints and bone plate. The artificial hip joints have galvanic couple between stem made of Titanium or its alloy and femoral head made of CoCr alloy, and are subjected to high levels of mechanical stress. Tribocorrosion of artificial hip joints has been frequently reported. The tribocorrosion behavior is affected not only by anodic reaction on friction part but also by cathodic reaction on the non-friction part. Therefore, it is important to study the effect of cathodic reaction on tribocorrosion. However, it is difficult to analyze local reaction and separate the anode current and cathode current by experiments. Since the numerical simulation enables such analysis, it is very useful to apply the numerical simulation to the analysis of tribocorrosion. However, the electrochemical numerical simulation of tribocorrosion has not been performed yet. In the present work, we performed the electrochemical numerical simulation for tribocorrosion of Titanium with galvanic couple in simulated body fluid to investigate the effect of the cathodic reaction on the tribocorrosion behavior.
