Abstract: Titanium alloys are used in medical devices due to their mechanical properties, but also for their corrosion resistance. The natural passivation of titanium-based biomaterials, on the surface of which a dense and coherent film of nanometric thickness is formed, composed mainly of TiO2, determines an apparent bioactivity of them. In this paper, the method of obtaining new Ti20MoxSi alloys (x = 0.0, 0.5, 0.75, and 1.0) is presented, their microstructure is analyzed, and their electrochemical responses in Ringer´s solution were systematically investigated by linear polarization, cyclic potential dynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The alloys corrosion resistance is high, and no evidence of localized breakdown of the passive layer was observed. There is no regularity determined by the composition of the alloys, in terms of corrosion resistance, but it seems that the most resistant is Ti20Mo1.0Si.

Abstract: This study presents a novel laser processing technique in a liquid media to enhance the surface mechanical properties of a material, by thermal impact and micro-alloying at the subsurface level. An aqueous solution of nickel acetate (15% wt.) was used as liquid media for laser processing of C45E steel. A pulsed laser TRUMPH Truepulse 556 coupled to a PRECITEC 200 mm focal length optical system, manipulated by a robotic arm, was employed for the under-liquid micro-processing. The study’s novelty lies in the diffusion of nickel in the C45E steel samples, resulting from the addition of nickel acetate to the liquid media. Micro-alloying and phase transformation were achieved up to a 30 µm depth from the surface. The laser micro-processed surface morphology was analysed using optical and scanning electron microscopy. Energy dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction were used to determine the chemical composition and structural development, respectively. The microstructure refinement was observed, along with the development of nickel-rich compounds at the subsurface level, contributing to an improvement of the micro and nanoscale hardness and elastic modulus (230 GPa). The laser-treated surface exhibited an enhancement of microhardness from 250 to 660 HV0.03 and an improvement of more than 50% in corrosion rate.

Abstract: Due to the optimistic outcomes of the research on high-entropy alloys, new designs of these alloys are being encouraged. We studied the high-entropy CoCrFeMoNi alloy and the CoCrFeMoNi alloy doped with Zr. In order to choose the best electrical equivalent circuit for the prediction of the behavior of these high-entropy alloys at various potentials in artificial seawater, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements were conducted on samples with and without Zr-doped CoCrFeMoNi. At various potential levels, the impedance spectra were measured between −1.0 and +0.8 V vs. SCE. The study consists of a preliminary section with microstructure by metallography, open-circuit potential, and linear polarization curves by direct-current tests followed by visual analysis of the impedance spectra, and, finally, the selection of an equivalent electrical circuit model to fit the experimental data. By leveraging the advantages of EIS analysis, the information is essential for materials development, corrosion-mitigation strategies, and the successful implementation of these alloys in practical applications. It is important to note that selecting an equivalent circuit is often an iterative and subjective process, as it involves a balance between model complexity and the ability to accurately represent the system’s behavior.

Abstract: The high entropy alloys have attracted the interest of material scientists due to theirspecial mechanical properties and a very good corrosion behavior. The corrosion resistance is provided by the formation of a passive, thin and compact oxide film that prevents the chemical dissolution of the metallic matrix. The effect of aluminum in AlxCrFeCoNi high entropy alloys (with x = 1; 1.5 and 2) that were obtained by electric arc melting under argon atmosphere has been studied in the paper. In order to understand the processes involved in metal corrosion, the alloys have been tested by polarization resistance method in 3.5% NaCl solution and main corrosion parameters have been analyzed (i.e. corrosion potential; corrosion current density; corrosion rate and polarization resistance). The surfaces of the corroded samples were examined by scanning electron microscopy to estimate the effect of the chemical composition on corrosion resistance. The corrosion tests have shown that the corrosion resistance of the HEA decreases by increasing the aluminum content from about 15 at.% to 32 at. % Al and reducing the chromium content from 28 at. % to 18 at.% Cr.

Abstract: Introduction In this paper, a novel Ti-15Ta-5Zr alloy with α+β stable, homogeneous, biphasic microstructure was synthesized; this alloy revealed very good mechanical properties and hardness and a Young’s modulus of 42.2 GPa, which are more suitable for an implant material than those of other existing implant materials (Ti, Ti-6Al-4V). Experimental The microstructure was identified by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Electrochemical properties of the interface between new alloy and simulated physiological Ringer-Brown solution were investigated by the potentiodynamic cyclic and linear polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Results and discussion SEM (Fig. 1) image of the chemically etched surface revealed a homogeneous α+β biphasic microstructure showing the characteristic interleaving lamellas of α and β phases. The cyclic potentiodynamic curves in Ringer-Brown solution (Fig. 2) showed the self-passivation of Ti-15Ta-5Zr alloy with a large constant current domain that indicates the absence of the electron transfer reactions and the existence of the ion transfer reactions, namely, the constant thickening of the oxide layer, according with the high field mechanism. The curve for Ti characterized by a slow increase of the passive current density with the applied potential suggests that its native passive film seems to dissolve and repassivate. These behavior differences between Ti and Ti-15Ta-5Zr alloy are due to the alloying elements Ta and Zr, which stabilize, reinforce the passive film on the new alloy surface. Alloy corrosion, E corr potentials have more electropositive value and passive current densities, i p are lower than those of Ti (Table 1) as result of the more compact, thicker, resistant passive film existing on the Ti-15Ta-5Zr alloy surface, that contains both protective TiO 2 and Ta 2 O 5 and ZrO 2 oxides. The alloy corrosion current densities, i corr and rates, V corr are lower (of about 70 times smaller) than those of Ti, proving a more protective passive film on the alloy surface. The alloy polarization resistances, R p reached higher values (about ten times higher) than those of Ti, fact that represents a very corrosion resistant material. Table 1. Main electrochemical parameters in Ringer-Brown solution Material E corr (mV) i corr (µA/cm 2 ) V corr (µm/y) i p (µA/cm 2 ) R p (kΩ.cm 2 ) Ti -250 3.890 44.1 10.5 29 Ti-15Ta-5Zr -210 0.055 0.63 1.12 250 The Nyquist plots (Fig. 3a) exhibited open arches, demonstrating capacitive behaviour, namely, a passive film with dielectric properties; the bigger diameters and impedance values for the alloy describe a more insulating, thicker, protective passive film on its surface. Bode phase spectra (Fig. 3b) displayed two phase angles; the higher phase angles recorded for the new alloy denote a nobler passive behaviour, a more stable passive state. These phase angles suggest a passive film with two layers: for the higher phase angle corresponds a barrier, compact, inner layer and the lower phase angle indicates a less protective, porous, outer layer. The open circuit potentials of the new Ti-15Ta-5Zr alloy shifted to nobler values in time; this behavior indicates the film thickening that confers high protection to alloy. SEM micrograph evinced (Fig. 4) some depositions on the alloy surfaces after 2000 immersion hours in Ringer-Brown solution; it is a continuous layer formed by globular nanocrystals with the diameter of about 2-3 µm, with interwoven texture in a porous feature. EDX elemental analysis (Fig. 4) detected the presence of calcium, phosphorus and oxygen, namely calcium phosphate, a precursor of the hydroxyapatite, the major inorganic component of the human bone. Therefore, the alloy surface represents a suitable support for the adhesion of the bone cells. Conclusions Main electrochemical parameters attested a nobler behaviour and lower corrosion rates, proving more resistant passive film on the alloy surface (in comparison with Ti) that is reinforced, stabilized by the very protective oxides of the alloying elements Ta and Zr. The new alloy represents an advanced alloy in the domain of the non-toxic, non-allergenic ternary implant alloys.
