Abstract: Based on the assumption that latex production is positively correlated to the diameter of the latex vessels and hoping to obtain rubber plants with larger latex vessels than those observed in normal plants, the authors duplicated the chromosome number of small seedlings, using aqueous solutions of colchicine. Some polyploid plants with 72 chromosomes were obtained. A special technique was developed, ensuring the obtention of twin plants from a single seed, by splitting very young seedlings; one of them remained untreated, while the other was submitted to a colchicine aqueous solution. Any difference noted later between the plants could only be attributed to the treatment and in several cases chromosome doubling has been achieved. In this way the pair was constituted by a diploid (2n =36) and a tetraploid plant (2n =72). The results show that in the polyploid as compared to the normal plants the stomata are larger and in smaller number per area unit. Some morphological differences were also noticed. Up to now no measurements were taken of the latex vessels neither of the polyploids nor of the normal plants. The material was propagated by budding, and a large number of each developed clone is being included in field experiments to test their productivity and resistance to diseases.

Abstract: A population composed of 153 plants of "timbó macaquinho" (Derris nicou) was studied for selection and establishment of high yielding rotenone clones. The roots were air dried and the humidity content determined. Ashes, total extracts, rotenone + degueline and rotenone were determined by chemical analyses. Individual results of the analyses are presented. From the data were calculated the net weight per plant of: a) air dried roots; b) total extracts; c) rotenone + degueline; d) rotenone; e) degueline; f) other extracts. Were also calculated: g) rotenone content in the total extracts; h) degueline content in the total extracts; i) other extracts in the total extracts; j) rotenone content in the rotenone + degueline complex. The results indicated that the population was composed of two distinct groups of plants: a) POPULATION A, with 82 plants of low rotenone content (less than 5%); POPULATION B, with 71 plants of high rotenone content (9% or more). In table 16 are presented the minimum, maximum and mean results for both populations. For the plants of population A the fallowing chief mean results were obtained: 1088g of roots; humidity, 6.88%; air dried roots, 1 005 g; ashes, 4.75%; total extracts, 9.84%; rotenone, 2.60%; degueline, 2.85%. For the plants of population B the chief mean results were as follows: roots, 1001g; humidity, 5.31%; air dried roots, 949g; ashes, 5.24%; total extracts, 28.63%; rotenone, 13.53%; degueline, 10.09%. In population A it was observed approximately the following proportion of extracts, in the total extracts: ¹/4 rotenone, ²/4 degueline and ¹/4 other extracts; in population B the proportions were, approximately, as follows: ³/6 rotenone, ²/6 degueline and ¹/6 other extracts. For both populations various correlation coefficients were calculated and were positively and highly significant (P = .01) those between: a) percentage of total extracts and percentage of rotenone; b) percentage of total extracts and percentage of rotenone + degueline; c) percentage of rotenone + degueline and percentage of rotenone.

Abstract: The results of 13 month tappings (half-spiral cut) of 29 seedlings of rubber trees, approximately 25 years old, ore presented. From September 16, 1943 to March 31, 1944, the trees were tapped every other day; from Abril 1st, to September 30, 1944, every day. The change of the tapping system, from every other day to daily, caused a small decrease in the mean yield of the group, per tapping; this yield decrease was more pronounced and frequent in the high production plants. It must be remembered, however, that during the every day period of tapping the plants passed through regular hibernation. The study of the plants as a group presented the following results, respectively for every other doy and daily tapping systems: a) 10.3% of the plant population yielded 27.0 and 24.9% of the total latex production; b) 24.1% of the plant population yielded 49.5 and 45.0% of the total latex production; c) 48.3% of the plant population yielded 75.8 and 70.7% of the total latex production; d) 75.9% of the plant population yielded 92,7 and 90.4% of the total latex production.

Abstract: This paper presents the life tables for sexually isolated males and females of the ''tobacco beetle", Lasioderma serricorne F., based on insects that lived in vials maintained in an incubator at 30°C and 85% of relative humidity, in the dark. The adults were obtained from three different cultures ; the immature stages were fed on wheat flour. For each culture the females were always longer-lived than the males (P = .01). The mean life durations for males from cultures a, b and c were respectively 23.06, 24.63 and 19.66 days. Males from cultures a and b showed no statistical difference in their life duration (P = .01). The mean life durations for females from cultures a, b, and c were respectively 33.63, 26.53 and 21.18 days. Those means are statistically different (P = .01). Males and females from cultures c were shorter lived (P = .01) than males and females of both cultures a and b. Considering the fact that the original number of beetles from culture c (382 males and 330 females) was much larger than the original number of beetles from culture a (171 males and 157 females) or b (146 males and 184 females), we know that the density of the larval population in the culture c was higher than in the culture a or b. Competition during the larval stage must be the chief factor responsible for the shortening of the mean adult life for both sexes of L. serricorne F. from culture c as compared with the mean adult life of adults from cultures a and b, less densely populated during the larval stage. This observation agrees with the criticism of Wright, mentioned by Allee, Emerson, Park and others (1) concerning the importance of exogenous events in the pre-imaginal period of the life duration of the adults. The data show that L. serricorne F. is an excellent material for studies on physiological longevity, because the adult beetles do not feed. For toxicological studies this insect species also seems to be a very appropriate material, as it is well brought out by the survivorship curves.
