    Abstract: We report ALMA detections of [C ii ] and a dust continuum in Az9, a multiply imaged galaxy behind the Frontier Field cluster MACS J0717.5+3745. The bright [C ii ] emission line provides a spectroscopic redshift of z = 4.274. This strongly lensed ( μ = 7 ± 1) galaxy has an intrinsic stellar mass of only 2 × 10 9 M ⊙ and a total star formation rate of 26 M ⊙ yr −1 (∼80% of which is dust-obscured). Using public magnification maps, we reconstruct the [C ii ] emission in the source plane to reveal a stable, rotation-dominated disk with V / σ = 5.3, which is 〉 2× higher than predicted from simulations for similarly high-redshift, low-mass galaxies. In the source plane, the [C ii ] disk has a half-light radius of 1.8 kpc and, along with the dust, is spatially offset from the peak of the stellar light by 1.4 kpc. Az9 is not deficient in [C ii ]; L [C II ] / L IR = 0.0027, consistent with local and high-redshift normal star-forming galaxies. While dust-obscured star formation is expected to dominate in higher-mass galaxies, such a large reservoir of dust and gas in a lower-mass disk galaxy 1.4 Gyr after the Big Bang challenges our picture of early galaxy evolution. Furthermore, the prevalence of such low-mass dusty galaxies has important implications for the selection of the highest-redshift dropout galaxies with JWST. As one of the lowest stellar mass galaxies at z 〉 4 to be detected in a dust continuum and [C ii ], Az9 is an excellent laboratory in which to study early dust enrichment in the interstellar medium.

    Abstract: The nearby, luminous infrared galaxy NGC 7469 hosts a Seyfert nucleus with a circumnuclear star-forming ring and is thus the ideal local laboratory for investigating the starburst–AGN (active galactic nucleus) connection in detail. We present integral-field observations of the central 1.3 kpc region in NGC 7469 obtained with the JWST Mid-InfraRed Instrument. Molecular and ionized gas distributions and kinematics at a resolution of ∼100 pc over the 4.9–7.6 μ m region are examined to study the gas dynamics influenced by the central AGN. The low-ionization [Fe ii ] λ 5.34 μ m and [Ar ii ] λ 6.99 μ m lines are bright on the nucleus and in the starburst ring, as opposed to H 2 S(5) λ 6.91 μ m, which is strongly peaked at the center and surrounding ISM. The high-ionization [Mg v ] line is resolved and shows a broad, blueshifted component associated with the outflow. It has a nearly face-on geometry that is strongly peaked on the nucleus, where it reaches a maximum velocity of −650 km s −1 , and extends about 400 pc to the east. Regions of enhanced velocity dispersion in H 2 and [Fe ii ] ∼ 180 pc from the AGN that also show high L (H 2 )/ L (PAH) and L ([Fe ii ])/ L (Pf α ) ratios to the W and N of the nucleus pinpoint regions where the ionized outflow is depositing energy, via shocks, into the dense interstellar medium between the nucleus and the starburst ring. These resolved mid-infrared observations of the nuclear gas dynamics demonstrate the power of JWST and its high-sensitivity integral-field spectroscopic capability to resolve feedback processes around supermassive black holes in the dusty cores of nearby luminous infrared galaxies.

    Abstract: Selecting the first galaxies at z 〉 7 − 10 from JWST surveys is complicated by z 〈 6 contaminants with degenerate photometry. For example, strong optical nebular emission lines at z 〈 6 may mimic JWST/NIRCam photometry of z 〉 7–10 Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs). Dust-obscured 3 〈 z 〈 6 galaxies in particular are potentially important contaminants, and their faint rest-optical spectra have been historically difficult to observe. A lack of optical emission line and continuum measures for 3 〈 z 〈 6 dusty galaxies now makes it difficult to test their expected JWST/NIRCam photometry for degenerate solutions with NIRCam dropouts. Toward this end, we quantify the contribution by strong emission lines to NIRCam photometry in a physically motivated manner by stacking 21 Keck II/NIRES spectra of hot, dust-obscured, massive ( log M * / M ⊙ ≳ 10 – 11 ) and infrared (IR) luminous galaxies at z ∼ 1–4. We derive an average spectrum and measure strong narrow (broad) [O iii ] 5007 and H α features with equivalent widths of 130 ± 20 Å (150 ± 50 Å) and 220 ± 30 Å (540 ± 80 Å), respectively. These features can increase broadband NIRCam fluxes by factors of 1.2 − 1.7 (0.2–0.6 mag). Due to significant dust attenuation ( A V ∼ 6), we find H α +[N ii ] to be significantly brighter than [O iii ]+H β and therefore find that emission-line dominated contaminants of high − z galaxy searches can only reproduce moderately blue perceived UV continua of S λ ∝ λ β with β 〉 − 1.5 and z 〉 4. While there are some redshifts ( z ∼ 3.75) where our stack is more degenerate with the photometry of z 〉 10 LBGs at λ rest ∼ 0.3–0.8 μ m , redder filter coverage beyond λ obs 〉 3.5 μ m and far-IR/submillimeter follow-up may be useful for breaking the degeneracy and making a crucial separation between two fairly unconstrained populations, dust-obscured galaxies at z ∼ 3–6 and LBGs at z 〉 10.

    Abstract: To sustain star formation rates (SFRs) of hundreds to thousands of solar masses per year over millions of years, a galaxy must efficiently cool its gas. At z ∼ 2, the peak epoch for stellar mass assembly, tracers of gas heating and cooling remain largely unexplored. For one z ∼ 2 starburst galaxy GS IRS20, we present Spitzer IRS spectroscopy of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) emission, and ALMA observations of [C II] 158 μ m fine-structure emission which we use to probe ISM heating/cooling. Coupled with an unusually warm dust component, the ratio of [C II] /PAH emission suggests a low photolelectric efficiency, and/or the importance of cooling from other far-IR lines in this galaxy. A low photoelectric efficiency at z ∼ 2 could be key for the peak in the SFR density of the universe by decoupling stellar radiation from ISM gas temperatures.

    Abstract: We present a search for extremely red, dust-obscured, z 〉 7 galaxies with JWST/NIRCam+MIRI imaging over the first 20 arcmin 2 of publicly available Cycle 1 data from the COSMOS-Web, CEERS, and PRIMER surveys. Based on their red color in F277W−F444W (∼2.5 mag) and detection in MIRI/F770W (∼25 mag), we identify two galaxies, COS-z8M1 and CEERS-z7M1, that have best-fit photometric redshifts of z = 8.4 − 0.4 + 0.3 and 7.6 − 0.1 + 0.1 , respectively. We perform spectral energy distribution fitting with a variety of codes (including bagpipes , prospector , beagle , and cigale ) and find a 〉 95% probability that these indeed lie at z 〉 7. Both sources are compact ( R eff ≲ 200 pc) and highly obscured ( A V ∼ 1.5–2.5) and, at our best-fit redshift estimates, likely have strong [O iii ]+H β emission contributing to their 4.4 μ m photometry. We estimate stellar masses of ∼10 10 M ⊙ for both sources; by virtue of detection in MIRI at 7.7 μ m, these measurements are robust to the inclusion of bright emission lines, for example, from an active galactic nucleus. We identify a marginal (2.9 σ ) Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array detection at 2 mm within 0.″5 of COS-z8M1, which, if real, would suggest a remarkably high IR luminosity of ∼10 12 L ⊙ . These two galaxies, if confirmed at z ∼ 8, would be extreme in their stellar and dust masses and may be representative of a substantial population of highly dust-obscured galaxies at cosmic dawn.

    Abstract: Massive galaxy clusters undergo strong evolution from z ∼ 1.6 to z ∼ 0.5, with overdense environments at high-z characterized by abundant dust-obscured star formation and stellar mass growth which rapidly give way to widespread quenching. Data spanning the near- to far-infrared (IR) can directly trace this transformation; however, such studies have largely been limited to the massive galaxy end of cluster populations. In this work, we present ‘total light’ stacking techniques spanning $3.4\!-\!500\, \mu$m aimed at revealing the total cluster emission, including low-mass members and potential intracluster dust. We detail our procedures for WISE, Spitzer, and Herschel imaging, including corrections to recover the total stacked emission in the case of high fractions of detected galaxies. We apply our techniques to 232 well-studied log$\, M_{200}/\mathrm{M}_{\odot }\sim 13.8$ clusters in multiple redshift bins, recovering extended cluster emission at all wavelengths. We measure the averaged IR radial profiles and spectral energy distributions (SEDs), quantifying the total stellar and dust content. The near-IR profiles are well described by an NFW model with a high (c ∼ 7) concentration. Dust emission is similarly concentrated, albeit suppressed at $r\lesssim 0.3\,$Mpc. The measured SEDs lack warm dust, consistent with the colder SEDs of low-mass galaxies. We derive total stellar masses consistent with the theoretical Mhalo−M⋆ relation and specific star formation rates that evolve strongly with redshift, echoing that of log$\, M_{\star }/\mathrm{M}_{\odot }\gtrsim 10$ cluster galaxies. Separating out the massive population reveals the majority of cluster far-IR emission ($\sim 70\!-\!80{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$) is provided by the low-mass constituents, which differs from field galaxies. This effect may be a combination of mass-dependent quenching and excess dust in low-mass cluster galaxies.

    Abstract: The plethora of alternative food labels emerging in the marketplace reflects consumer interest in informed and sustainable purchasing. However, consumers’ preferences vary with respect to the sustainability metrics represented by labeling programs. The goal of this project was to characterize public university students’ perceptions of product parameters commonly represented by food labels for produce (e.g., cost, taste, certified organic, locally grown). A consumer survey ( n = 338) was conducted at two university dining halls, located in close proximity to major residence hall communities which house approximately 2600 students. Culinary, health and cost attributes (taste, nutritional value, price and appearance) were ranked as more influential in determining purchasing decisions than sustainability attributes related to production and sourcing. While sustainability values were not as influential in driving purchasing behaviors as compared with product attributes, they were important to approximately 50% of the survey respondents. By identifying the sustainability values of students and their willingness to pay more for specific types of sustainable food, results from this study can inform efforts to align priorities of campus dining services with the values of their student patrons, as well as identify educational opportunities around agriculture and food production.

    Abstract: We present James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) integral-field spectroscopy of the nearby merging, luminous infrared galaxy, NGC 7469. This galaxy hosts a Seyfert type-1.5 nucleus, a highly ionized outflow, and a bright, circumnuclear star-forming ring, making it an ideal target to study active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback in the local universe. We take advantage of the high spatial/spectral resolution of JWST/MIRI to isolate the star-forming regions surrounding the central active nucleus and study the properties of the dust and warm molecular gas on ∼100 pc scales. The starburst ring exhibits prominent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission, with grain sizes and ionization states varying by only ∼30%, and a total star formation rate of 10–30 M ⊙ yr −1 derived from fine structure and recombination emission lines. Using pure rotational lines of H 2 we detect 1.2 × 10 7 M ⊙ of warm molecular gas at a temperature higher than 200 K in the ring. All PAH bands get significantly weaker toward the central source, where larger and possibly more ionized grains dominate the emission, likely the result of the ionizing radiation and/or the fast wind emerging from the AGN. The small grains and warm molecular gas in the bright regions of the ring however display properties consistent with normal star-forming regions. These observations highlight the power of JWST to probe the inner regions of dusty, rapidly evolving galaxies for signatures of feedback and inform models that seek to explain the coevolution of supermassive black holes and their hosts.
