Abstract: Abstract: This research aimed to understand the perception of the health professional(s) of the primary care about violence situations against women and to identify the strategies facing this problem. Therefore, a qualitative research was carried out through four focal groups, with further analysis of the information through the technique of Grounded Theory. The professionals recognize the presence of this violence; however, there is not always a reception or intervention. On the other hand, some professionals exemplified strategies to intervene and reported the effects of this interference in the reduction of the violence episodes. The results show up some questions that guide these positions and behaviours and are important for the reflection on the potentialities of Primary Care in this area.

Abstract: To determine the incidence and predictors of coronal caries among community‐dwelling elderly in a southern Brazilian city. Methods A cohort study was conducted using a simple random sample of persons aged 60 years or older in Carlos Barbosa city, southern Brazil. Interviews and oral examinations were conducted among 388 dentate individuals at baseline and among 273 at 4‐year follow‐up. The incidence of coronal caries was modeled by means of negative binomial regression. Results Some 184 (76.7%) participants presented with new coronal caries lesions or restorations, whose mean number was 2.2 ± 2.1, whereas the 4‐year mean coronal caries incidence rate was 0.28 ± 0.29. In the multivariate model that controlled for baseline predictors, older age, male gender, living in a rural area, current smoking, and negative self‐perception of oral health were associated with coronal caries incidence. Among clinical variables, the use of partial dentures was a predictor, whereas higher saliva flow rate was a protective factor for the outcome. Conclusions Demographic factors, primary determinants of health, behavioral, and clinical variables were predictors of the incidence of coronal caries. As people enter old age, even stronger emphasis should be put on preventive strategies.

Abstract: Abstract The aim was to evaluate the prevalence of utilization of prenatal oral health services and its associated factors, through data from Cycle I (2011-12) and II (2013-14) of PMAQ-AB. This was cross-sectional study with 4,340 women (Cycle I) and 6,209 women (Cycle II), with outcome of utilization oral health service in prenatal care. Multilevel Poisson regression was used for obtain prevalence ratios (PR). In Cycle I, the prevalence of prenatal oral health service utilization was 45.9% and 51.9% in cycle II. In cycle I, large municipalities (PR = 1.35; 95%CI 1.05-1.81), income ranging from 1 to 2 minimum wages (PR = 1.13; 95%CI 1.03-1.25), age ranging from 31 to 40 years old (PR = 1.33, 95%CI 1.15-1.54) and registry of dental appointments (PR = 1.17; 95%CI 1.06-1.29) they were associated with the outcome. In cycle II, southeast region (PR = 1.18; 95%CI 1.03-1.36), high oral healthcare coverage (PR = 1.11; 95%CI 1.01-1.22), age ranging from 31 to 40 years old (PR = 1.22; 95%CI 1.09-1.36), the health workers enrollment in permanent education actions (PR = 1.14; 95%CI 1.01-1.30) and opening times that match the user’s needs (PR = 1.40; 95%CI 1.25-1.57) they were associated with the outcome. The individual factors and factors related to the organization of the healthcare service are associated with oral healthcare utilization during prenatal care.

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between psychological resilience and oral health related to quality of life through a hierarchical approach based on a conceptual theoretical model in a cohort of elderly residents in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study nested in a cohort study in 2008. We evaluated 498 elderly residents in Carlos Barbosa, Rio Grande do Sul. The measures included sociodemographic questionnaire, health behavior, quality of life related to oral health (OHRQOL), measured by the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14), Resilience Scale, and DMFT. The association between resilience and potential impacts on perceptions of oral health-related quality of life was assessed through negative binomial regression. Mean ratios (MR) are presented with 95% confidence intervals (95%CI). RESULTS: Higher means of OHIP were found in women 6.7 ± 6.3; p = 0.011), in rural dwellers (7.3 ± 6.7; p = 0.004) and singles (8.0 ± 6.3; p = 0.032). The final model of multivariate analysis showed that being a rural dweller (MR = 1.32; 95%CI 1.06 - 1.65) and being married (MR = 1.36; 95%CI 1.07 - 1.72) were independently associated with OHRQOL. There was no association between resilience and OHRQOL. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that factors such as sociodemographic variables are associated with OHRQOL. The hypothesis that resilience might play a role in the outcome has not been confirmed.

Abstract: doi: 10.1111/j.1741‐2358.2012.00656.x Assessing changes in oral health‐related quality of life and its factors in community‐dwelling older Brazilians Objective:  To describe changes in oral health‐related quality of life and to evaluate the associations of these changes in community‐dwelling older people. Materials and methods:  In this longitudinal study a representative sample of 872 older people, living in Brazil, was evaluated during 2004. The follow‐up was carried out during 2008, with 587 older persons evaluated. A questionnaire assessing socio‐demographic information, health history, oral health‐impact profile and number of natural teeth was used. Changes in oral health‐related quality of life were categorized as improvement or deterioration. Data analysis was performed using a hierarchical approach based in a conceptual framework. A hierarchal approach was carried out using Poisson regressions. Results:  Older persons living in rural areas, those who reported brushing once a day or less and older persons with fewer natural teeth had an increased chance of reporting deterioration in oral health‐related quality of life. Women and participants who received a minimum wage of less than US$219.50 were more likely to report improvement in oral health‐related quality of life. Conclusion:  The results of this study suggest that changes in the oral health‐related quality of life are influenced by many of the variables that were included in the conceptual framework.
