    Transdisciplinary sustainability research in real-world labs: success factors and methods for change

    Kurzfassung: The transdisciplinary research mode has gained prominence in the research on and for sustainability transformations. Yet, solution-oriented research addressing complex sustainability problems has become complex itself, with new transdisciplinary research formats being developed and tested for this purpose. Application of new formats offers learning potentials from experience. To this end, we accompanied fourteen research projects conceptualized as real-world labs (RwLs) from 2015 to 2018. RwLs were part of a funding program on ‘Science for Sustainability’ in the German federal state of Baden-Württemberg. Here, we combine conceptual and empirical work to a structured collection of experiences and provide a comprehensive account of RwLs. First, we outline characteristics of RwLs as transformation oriented, transdisciplinary research approach, using experiments, enabling learning and having a long-term orientation. Second, we outline eleven success factors and concrete design notes we gained through a survey of the 14 RwLs: (1) find the right balance between scientific and societal aims, (2) address the practitioners needs and restrictions, (3) make use of the experimentation concept, (4) actively communicate, (5) develop a ‘collaboration culture’, (6) be attached to concrete sites, (7) create lasting impact and transferability, (8) plan for sufficient time and financial means, (9) adaptability, (10) research-based learning, and (11) recognize dependency on external actors. Characteristics and success factors are combined to illustrate practical challenges in RwLs. Third, we show which methods could be used to cope with challenges in RwLs. We conclude discussing the state of debate on RwLs and outline future avenues of research.

    Kurzfassung: As the number of concomitantly used drugs increases, the prevalence of medication risks increases. These include, for example, drug interactions which may reduce or increase the desired and undesired effects of individual drugs. Objectives The POLypharmacy, drug interActions and Risks (POLAR) project aims to contribute to the detection of medication risks in patients with polymedication using methods and processes of the Medical Informatics Initiative (MII) on the basis of “real world data” (inpatient treatment data of university hospitals). In the article, the specific clinical problems are presented and illustrated based on an evaluation example. Materials and methods Specific pharmacological questions are mapped algorithmically and applied in distributed analyses in 13 data integration centers. An essential prerequisite for the application of these algorithms is the core data set structure of the MII, which relies on international information technology, interoperability, and terminology standards. Results In POLAR, it was demonstrated for the first time that inpatient treatment data can be made usable across sites for research questions on drug-related problems based on coordinated, interoperable data exchange formats in a privacy-compliant manner. Conclusions An interim report from the POLAR project shows the first, preliminary result of an analysis. In addition, more general discussions of technical, legal, communicative opportunities and challenges are presented, with a focus on using inpatient treatment data as “real world data” for research purposes.

    Kurzfassung: Real-world laboratories are receiving increasing public attention and have established themselves as a relevant research format in technology assessment. They appear particularly suited to address current challenges through social learning. However, references to educational implications have remained largely unexplored theoretically to date. Against this background, we consider learning processes in real- world laboratories in terms of their contribution to social learning. To this end, starting from critical education theory, the article reconstructs three dimensions of learning in the real-world laboratory using the Magdeburg student project in:takt as a case study. As a result, learning processes in real-world laboratories prove to be an experimental and spatial appropriation of the world that contributes to overcoming societal challenges.

    Kurzfassung: Die Wissensgesellschaft bringt neue Herausforderungen und Möglichkeiten für Städte mit sich und verändert Stadtentwicklungsprozesse. Für eine umfassende wissenschaftliche Begleitung dieses Wandels werden neue Formate inter- und transdisziplinärer Forschungsarbeit notwendig, die es ermöglichen, relevante Akteure der Stadtentwicklung einzubinden sowie gleichzeitig nachhaltige Prozesse urbaner Transformation ergebnisoffen in Gang zu setzen. Das Reallabor „Urban Office – Nachhaltige Stadtentwicklung in der Wissensgesellschaft“ erweitert deshalb etablierte, an Beobachtung orientierte Positionen der Forschung. Dies geschieht mit Hilfe von vier konkreten städtebaulichen Vorhaben (Praxisprojekte), anhand derer ForscherInnen verschiedener Disziplinen co-produktiv mit Praxisakteuren Forschungs-, Governance- und Planungsprozesse auf Augenhöhe anstoßen. Von zentraler Bedeutung für ein erfolgreiches Agieren ist die Entwicklung neuer Kommunikations- und Forschungsformate, die die Stadtverwaltung, die Internationale Bauausstellung Heidelberg (IBA), BürgerInnen sowie weitere PraxispartnerInnen in den Prozess des Co-Design integrieren und das „Urban Office“ zum Ort von Reflexion und „Co-Produktion von Wissen“ und somit selbst zum Teil des „Experiments“ werden lassen.
