Abstract: Background: To study the prevalence of dry eye among the patients of pterygium and to find the clinical correlation between dry eye and pterygium. Methods: The study was conducted at postgraduate department of Ophthalmology of GMC Jammu over a period of one year. 90 pterygium patients and 180 age and sex matched controls presenting to the eye OPD of GMC Jammu were included in the study. The TBUT, Schirmer’s test, basal tear secretion and Rose Bengal staining score were estimated in all patients. A TBUT of less than 10 seconds, a Schirmer’s test of less than 10mm, basal tear secretion of less than 10mm, Rose Bengal staining score of more than 3 were considered abnormal. Results: Redness 57 (63.33%) was the most frequently occurring symptom in pterygium patients followed by cosmosis 49 (54.44%). The mean TBUT, mean Schirmer’s, mean basal secretion and mean Rose Bengal staining score values were 9.88±3.39 seconds, 13.17±4.57mm, 10.11±4.81mm and 3.27±1.85 in pterygium patients and 14.22±3.99 seconds, 16.40±5.21mm, 12.19±5.05mm and 2.49±1.86 in the control group respectively. There was a statistically significant difference in the dry eye results between the pterygium patients and control groups (p 〈 0.001). The odd’s ratio between dry eye and pterygium was 3.83, dry eye was present in 53 pterygium patients. Conclusions: The prevalence of dry eye in pterygium patients was 58.89% which suggests that there is a strong positive clinical correlation between dry eye and pterygium.

Abstract: Background: Blindness due to cornea is a major public health issue, especially in developing countries like India. Corneal transplantation is the treatment for restoring vision in corneal blind patients. The aim of present study was to compare the level of awareness regarding eye donation among medical, engineering and law students. Methods: The present cross sectional, comparative study involved students following their respective courses (1st final year) from October 2017 to December 2017. Out of 168 students, 60 were medical, 56 were engineering and 52 were law students. The study started with initial clarification of questions and those who were willing to participate, were requested to fill the semi-structure pilot tested questionnaire form on eye donation with informed consent. Results: All the students were aware of eye donation, but medical students were much aware on various parameters. The most powerful information tool to reach out all the students was television whereas among medical ophthalmology is one of subject they study in their respective course which provide them maximum knowledge regarding eye donation. Conclusions: Level of awareness and knowledge regarding eye donation is much better among medical students (MBBS) in comparison with engineering and law students. Thus, professionals (medical doctors, engineers and lawyers) should be actively involved in creating awareness regarding eye donation and hence play vital role to reach out people for optimum benefit.

Abstract: Background: One of the frequent problem in schizophrenic patients is non adherence to treatment which can be partial or complete7 and can leads to poor clinical outcomes. Non adherence to antipsychotic medications can lead to increased episodes of violent behavior, exacerbation of psychotic symptoms, increased rates of suicidal/homicidal behavior and resistance to drugs. Aims: To find prevalence of non adherence to treatment in schizophrenic patients. Materials & Methods: This is an observational, cross-sectional study which was conducted over a period of two months, on schizophrenic patients attending the outpatient department (OPD) of tertiary care hospital, Jammu. After meeting inclusion and exclusion criteria, total of 131 patients were selected for the study. Various parameters like age, sex, education, marital status etc were collected. A patient is said to be non adherent if he takes less than 80% of prescribed medication or have gaps in medication of at least 7 days.  Results: 64.9% schizophrenic patients were non adherent to their treatment. Prevalence of non adherence was higher in those schizophrenic patients who were males, unmarried, uneducated, unemployed, from rural areas, below 20 years of age and belongs to lower socioeconomic status whereas it was low in those who had parents as their caretakers. Conclusion: In the present study it is concluded that the prevalence of non adherence among schizophrenic patients is high which may hamper treatment outcome, worsens the prognosis of the disease and produces excessive burden on the caretakers of these patients. Hence it is suggested that in addition to providing treatment to these patients, necessary initiatives must be taken by health care professionals to prevent relapses of symptoms by maintaining treatment compliance. Abstract: Background: Glaucoma comprises group of disorder which cause damage to the ganglion cells and optic nerve fibers resulting in permanent loss of vision. Glaucoma is a silent killer of vision, the only treatable factor is IOP which can be lowered by medical means, laser treatment or surgery. Objectives: The objective of the study was to see profile of patients of glaucoma in jammu province. Material and method: The present prospective study involved 200 patients was conducted in the out-patient department of ophthalmology at tertiary care hospital of North India. After meeting inclusion & exclusion crieteria the patients underwent detailed clinical history, general examination, complete ophthalmological examination including dilated fundus examination, intra ocular pressure measurement, gonioscopy etc was done to diagnose different types of glaucoma. Results: Maximum number of patients i.e.128 were seen in age group of ≥50yrs followed by 60 in 41-50 yrs. Males i.e. 127 outnumbered females in present study. Total of 139 were from rural area. Maximum patients complain of diminution of vision ie 180 followed by pain in 135. Vision of 6/24-6/18 i.e. 59 (R/E) & 57 (L/E) followed by PL to 〈 6/60 in 48(R/E) & 47(L/E) patients whereas PL absent was seen in 12 patients. Gonioscopically angle was open in 172(R/E) & 174(L/E) patients. Total of 102 patients had POAG. Conclusion: From present study we may conclude that glaucoma problem was more common in elderly age group and in males. It can lead to loss of vision among patient who suffer extreme optic nerve damage without realizing it. Therefore, for everybody above the age of 40years, it is mandatory to have IOP checked once a year especially if there is any risk factor for glaucoma like diabetes mellitus, myopia, family history of glaucoma, prolonged use of topical steroids etc. Keywords: Glaucoma, Gonioscopy, Intraocular Pressure(IOP), Visual acuity.

Abstract: Background: Phacoemulsification is a state of the art surgery for cataract removal. From the simple procedure of couching practiced by sushruta to latest method of phaco emulsification of Charles kelman, cataract surgery had undergone a tremendous metamorphosis. Phacoemulsification is one of the most successful surgical procedures performed, and its popularity is due to decreased operating time and a shorter postoperative healing period. The objective of the study was to evaluate intraoperative and postoperative complications of phacoemulsification with PCIOL implantation surgery. Materials & Methods: The present prospective study was conducted over a period of 6 months on patients having visually significant cataract that presented to or were referred to ophthalmology Department, GMCH, Jammu and after getting admission underwent planned extracapsular cataract extraction by phacoemulsification with posterior chamber intraocular lens ( PCIOL) implantation. After meeting inclusion & exclusion crieteria all the patients underwent complete examination as history, ocular examination, systemic examination and laboratory tests like haemoglobin etc. Results: Out of 200, maximum numbers of patients were in age group of 41-50 i.e. 90 followed by 82 patients in 51-60yrs age group. Males were 112.Total of 148 patients were from urban area. Best corrected preoperative visual acuity of ≤6/36 was seen in 102 patients whereas 6th week postoperatively only 7 patients had visual acuity of ≤6/36. The final 6th week postoperative best corrected visual acuity of 6/12- 6/6 was found in 171 patients. Among intraoperative complications hyphaema & constriction of pupil each were seen in 2 patients, followed by posterior capsule rent in 3 patients only while postoperatively mild uveitis was seen in 30 followed by striate keratopathy in 12 patients. Conclusion: From present study, we may conclude that phacoemulsification with posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation is a good surgical tecqinique for cataract which can be performed safely with good visual outcome, with few intraoperative and postoperative complications in expert hands.
