Kurzfassung: To combat the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, nonpharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) were implemented worldwide, which impacted a broad spectrum of acute respiratory infections (ARIs). Methods Etiologically diagnostic data from 142 559 cases with ARIs, who were tested for 8 viral pathogens (influenza virus [IFV], respiratory syncytial virus [RSV] , human parainfluenza virus [HPIV], human adenovirus [HAdV] , human metapneumovirus [HMPV], human coronavirus [HCoV] , human bocavirus [HBoV], and human rhinovirus [HRV] ) between 2012 and 2021, were analyzed to assess the changes in respiratory infections in China during the first COVID-19 pandemic year compared with pre-pandemic years. Results Test-positive rates of all respiratory viruses decreased during 2020, compared to the average levels during 2012–2019, with changes ranging from −17.2% for RSV to −87.6% for IFV. Sharp decreases mostly occurred between February and August when massive NPIs remained active, although HRV rebounded to the historical level during the summer. While IFV and HMPV were consistently suppressed year-round, RSV, HPIV, HCoV, HRV, and HBoV resurged and went beyond historical levels during September 2020–January 2021, after NPIs were largely relaxed and schools reopened. Resurgence was more prominent among children & lt;18 years and in northern China. These observations remain valid after accounting for seasonality and long-term trend of each virus. Conclusions Activities of respiratory viral infections were reduced substantially in the early phases of the COVID-19 pandemic, and massive NPIs were likely the main driver. Lifting of NPIs can lead to resurgence of viral infections, particularly in children.

Kurzfassung: National-based prospective surveillance of all-age patients with acute diarrhea was conducted in China between 2009‒2018. Here we report the etiological, epidemiological, and clinical features of the 152,792 eligible patients enrolled in this analysis. Rotavirus A and norovirus are the two leading viral pathogens detected in the patients, followed by adenovirus and astrovirus. Diarrheagenic Escherichia coli and nontyphoidal Salmonella are the two leading bacterial pathogens, followed by Shigella and Vibrio parahaemolyticus . Patients aged 〈 5 years had higher overall positive rate of viral pathogens, while bacterial pathogens were more common in patients aged 18‒45 years. A joinpoint analysis revealed the age-specific positivity rate and how this varied for individual pathogens. Our findings fill crucial gaps of how the distributions of enteropathogens change across China in patients with diarrhea. This allows enhanced identification of the predominant diarrheal pathogen candidates for diagnosis in clinical practice and more targeted application of prevention and control measures.

Kurzfassung: Nationwide prospective surveillance of all-age patients with acute respiratory infections was conducted in China between 2009‒2019. Here we report the etiological and epidemiological features of the 231,107 eligible patients enrolled in this analysis. Children 〈 5 years old and school-age children have the highest viral positivity rate (46.9%) and bacterial positivity rate (30.9%). Influenza virus, respiratory syncytial virus and human rhinovirus are the three leading viral pathogens with proportions of 28.5%, 16.8% and 16.7%, and Streptococcus pneumoniae , Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Klebsiella pneumoniae are the three leading bacterial pathogens (29.9%, 18.6% and 15.8%). Negative interactions between viruses and positive interactions between viral and bacterial pathogens are common. A Join-Point analysis reveals the age-specific positivity rate and how this varied for individual pathogens. These data indicate that differential priorities for diagnosis, prevention and control should be highlighted in terms of acute respiratory tract infection patients’ demography, geographic locations and season of illness in China.

Kurzfassung: This meta-analysis aimed to determine the efficacy of curcumin in preventing liver fibrosis in animal models. Methods A systematic search was conducted on studies published from establishment to November 2023 in PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Library, and other databases. The methodological quality was assessed using Sycle’s RoB tool. An analysis of sensitivity and subgroups were performed when high heterogeneity was observed. A funnel plot was used to assess publication bias. Results This meta-analysis included 24 studies involving 440 animals with methodological quality scores ranging from 4 to 6. The results demonstrated that curcumin treatment significantly improved Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) [standard mean difference (SMD) = -3.90, 95% confidence interval (CI) (−4.96, −2.83), p & lt; 0.01, I 2 = 85.9%], Alanine aminotransferase (ALT)[SMD = − 4.40, 95% CI (−5.40, −3.40), p & lt; 0.01, I 2 = 81.2%]. Sensitivity analysis of AST and ALT confirmed the stability and reliability of the results obtained. However, the funnel plot exhibited asymmetry. Subgroup analysis based on species and animal models revealed statistically significant differences among subgroups. Furthermore, curcumin therapy improved fibrosis degree, oxidative stress level, inflammation level, and liver synthesis function in animal models of liver fibrosis. Conclusion Curcumin intervention not only mitigates liver fibrosis but also enhances liver function, while concurrently modulating inflammatory responses and antioxidant capacity in animal models. This result provided a strong basis for further large-scale animal studies as well as clinical trials in humans in the future. Kurzfassung: 〈 b 〉 〈 i 〉 Background/Aims: 〈 /i 〉 〈 /b 〉 Elevated serum uric acid (UA) was intimately correlated with vascular stiffness and abnormal ankle brachial index (ABI) in various populations. These correlations lost significance after adjustment for estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), indicating that the association of UA and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) or ABI might be driven by kidney function. UA is predominantly eliminated through the kidneys, and metabolic disorders can influence the clearance of UA. In this study, we aimed to explore the putative correlation between FEUA and baPWV or ABI to determine to what extent the associations with UA were affected by renal function. 〈 b 〉 〈 i 〉 Methods: 〈 /i 〉 〈 /b 〉 This cross-sectional study enrolled 2351 participants, who underwent general health screening in Hanzhong people’s hospital from March to June of 2017. BaPWV and ABI were measured using a volume-plethysmographic apparatus (BP-203RPEII; Nihon Colin, Tokyo, Japan). FEUA was divided into quartiles: Q1:FEUA≤3.07; Q2: 3.07 & #x3c;FEUA≤5.32; Q3: 5.32 & #x3c;FEUA≤9.19; and Q4: FEUA & #x3e; 9.19. 〈 b 〉 〈 i 〉 Results: 〈 /i 〉 〈 /b 〉 Lower FEUA predicted a higher prevalence of high baPWV and low ABI (p for trend & #x3c;0.001). The respective ORs for high baPWV from the first to the third quartiles of FEUA were 1.777(1.323, 2.387); 1.561(1.158, 2.104); and 1.680 (1.250, 2.259). The prevalence of low ABI was greatly elevated with the decrement of FEUA [ORs for the first to third FEUA quartiles were 6.977(2.062, 23.610); 5.123(1.475, 17.790); and 2.685(0.709, 10.171), respectively]. The association of FEUA and ABI was independent of related confounding factors. However, the association between FEUA and baPWV was greatly influenced by corresponding confounders, especially gender. The efficacy of FEUA in the prediction of low ABI was stronger than that of serum UA. However, serum UA was more powerful in the prediction of high baPWV. 〈 b 〉 〈 i 〉 Conclusion: 〈 /i 〉 〈 /b 〉 Kidney function exerted a profound influence on the relationship between UA and baPWV or ABI, revealing complex interactions among cardiovascular risk factors.

Kurzfassung: Cascading failure is ubiquitous in many networked infrastructure systems, such as power grids, Internet and air transportation systems. In this paper, we extend the cascading failure model to a scale-free network with tunable clustering and focus on the effect of clustering coefficient on system robustness. It is found that the network robustness undergoes a nonmonotonic transition with the increment of clustering coefficient: both highly and lowly clustered networks are fragile under the intentional attack, and the network with moderate clustering coefficient can better resist the spread of cascading. We then provide an extensive explanation for this constructive phenomenon via the microscopic point of view and quantitative analysis. Our work can be useful to the design and optimization of infrastructure systems.

Kurzfassung: A numerical method to simulate air flow around a bundle conductor line by means of the FLUENT software is presented and verified by a wind tunnel test for aerodynamic characteristics of a twin bundle conductor line. The lift and drag coefficients of the leeward sub-conductor of a twin bundle conductor varying with its relative position in the wake zone to the windward one under different wind velocities are numerically determined by the presented method. A user-defined subroutine of ABAQUS software is developed to apply the aerodynamic loads on each sub-conductor and the electromagnetic force between sub-conductors. The numerical simulation method for wake-induced oscillation of a bundle conductor line is proposed. By means of the numerical method, wake-induced oscillation processes of twin bundle conductor transmission lines under different parameters, including current intensity, spacer layout, span length and wind velocity, are numerically simulated. Moreover, the effects of those parameters on the oscillation characteristics of the lines, such as vibration mode, frequency, amplitude and motion trace, are discussed. The results obtained provide a fundamental basis for the understanding of wake-induced oscillation behaviour of twin bundle conductor transmission lines and the development of control technique for wake-induced oscillation.
