In: International Journal of Multiple Research Approaches, Dialectical Publishing, Vol. 14, No. 3 ( 2022-12-31), p. 101-121
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to analyze how university students perceive their readiness and attitudes to learn in the context of remote teaching in the COVID-19 pandemic. A fully mixed concurrent equal-status design was conducted involving 1,127 students enrolled at the Federal University of Santa Catarina, in Florianópolis, Brazil, who completed an online questionnaire. Inferential statistics were used to analyze the quantitative data. The qualitative responses were analyzed using the R pourles Analyzes Multidimensinelles Interface by Textes et de Questionnaires (IRAMUTEQ®). The quantitative and qualitative data were integrated throughout the study—yielding an integrated form of mixed methods known as a meta-methods research study, involving the full(er) integration of multiple methods research approaches and mixed methods research approaches. Specifically, the qualitative and quantitative data were integrated via descriptive-based quantitizing and inferential-based quantitizing techniques. No statistically significant difference was identified regarding students’ attitudes towards remote teaching, learning, and assessment as a function of field of study. However, there was a statistically significant difference between the fields with regard to the communication in remote learning (i.e., online communication), indicating that the nature of specific knowledge addressed in the educational process might require different forms of communication in the context of online teaching. In addition, it was identified that younger students, up to 24 years old, reported more difficulties with this online teaching model. The graduate students demonstrated more positive attitudes towards remote learning compared to the undergraduate students. Predominantly, the participants of this study believed “that there is no equivalence between remote and face-to-face teaching,” which can be explained by the lack of autonomy to manage their learning process because only 56.8% consider that they had autonomy to study and to learn. During the qualitative stage, students responded to the following open-ended question: To what extent do you consider your current family situation/home environment suitable for remote learning? Via the analysis using the Iramuteq® software, the following five semantic themes were extracted: (a) Feeling privileged; (b) Difficulties in establishing a study routine; (c) Difficulty in concentrating; (d) Internet access problems; and (e) Structural limitations. The integrated analysis allowed elucidation of the influence of the home environment on remote learning. The integration of data revealed that underage, single, childless, and living-alone students were statistically significantly associated with the thematic categories regarding the difficulty in concentrating, difficulty in establishing a routine of studies, and having problems accessing the Internet. Implications of these findings are discussed.

Abstract: Objective: evaluate the transition of care from the perspective of people living with chronic diseases and identify its relation with clinical and sociodemographic characteristics. Method: cross-sectional study with 487 patients who were discharged from a hospital. Clinical and sociodemographic characterization instruments were used, as well as the Care Transitions Measure-15, which measures Preparation for self-management, Secured preferences, Understanding about medications and Care plan factors. Descriptive and inferential statistical analysis. Results: the transition of care was satisfactory (76.8±10.4). Average of the factors: Preparation for self-management (82.2±10.8), Secured preferences (84.7±14.3), Understanding about medications (75.7±13.7) and Care plan (64.5±13.2). Female patients had a higher average in the understanding about medications factor. Whites and residents in the urban area better evaluated the Care plan factor. The highest mean was observed for the Secured preferences factor (84.7±14.3) and the lowest for the Care plan factor (64.5±13.2). In all factors, significant differences were found in the variables (surgical patient, carrying clinical artifacts and not being hospitalized for COVID-19). Patients hospitalized for up to five days showed statistical difference in Preparation for self-management and Understanding about medications factors. In patients who were not readmitted within 30 days of discharge, Preparation for self-management was better. The better the Preparation for self-management, the lower the 30-day readmission rates. Conclusion: in patients living with chronic diseases, sociodemographic and clinical variables are associated with the transition of care. Patients who better evaluated preparation for self-management had fewer readmissions within 30 days.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Near-miss analysis is an effective method for preventing serious adverse events, including never events such as wrong-site surgery. OBJECTIVE: To analyze all near-miss incidents reported in a large general hospital in southern Brazil between January 2013 and August 2017. METHOD: We performed a descriptive retrospective study of near-miss incidents recorded in the hospital’s electronic reporting system in a large non-profit hospital (497 beds). The results are expressed as absolute (n) and relative frequencies (%). Pearson’s chi-square test, Fisher’s exact test (Monte Carlo simulation) and linear regression were used. RESULTS: A total of 12,939 near-miss incidents were recorded during the study period, with linear growth in the number of reports. Near-miss incidents were most frequent for medication, followed by processes unspecified in the International Classification for Patient Safety framework, followed by information control (patient chart and fluid balance data), followed by venous/vascular puncture. The highest prevalence of reports was observed in inpatient wards, in adult, pediatric, and neonatal intensive care units, and in the surgical center/post-anesthesia care unit. Pharmacists and nursing personnel recorded most of the reports during the day shift. CONCLUSION: The most frequent categories of near-miss incidents were medication processes, other institutional protocols, information control issues, and venous/vascular puncture. The significant number of reported near-miss incidents reflects good adherence to the reporting system.

Objetivos: Verificar a associação do polimorfismo T102C 5HT-2A e síncope vasovagal.
