Abstract:
It has been reported that D amino-acids are present in the molecules of various antibiotic polypeptides such as gramicidin1,2, tyrociain3, gramicidin S4, aerosporin5 and bacitracin6. The penicillins on degradation give D-penicillamine (β:β-dimethylcysteine) and du Vigneaud and his collaborators7 have shown that an antibiotic penicillin may be synthesised from D-penicillamine, whereas the isomer from L-penicillamine is biologically inactive.
