Abstract: Aim The aim of the article is to systematize the knowledge regarding the theoretical background of the notion referred to in numerous studies as high sensitivity. The basis for the undertaken analyses is the concept of sensory processing sensitivity, which is important for the theoretical development of the issue of environmental sensitivity. Due to its application value, the concept is used in applied studies of individual differences in sensitivity to environmental stimuli. Based thereon, psychometric tools are developed to measure sensitivity, understood as a phenotypic trait in adults and children. Method The article presents qualitative research that was carried out using a systematic literature review (PRISMA) as part of the project “High sensitivity ‒ innovative module in human sciences” (HSP) No. 2020-1-PL01-KA203-082261. The study was conducted using the following databases: PubMed, ScienceDirect and Scopus. Results As part of the systematic review, 821 articles were identified containing the keywords “sensory processing sensitivity” OR “highly sensitive person” AND “theory” OR “theoretical background”. After eliminating duplicating articles (n = 33), titles and abstracts were analysed. In the next step, 705 articles were removed in line with the adopted exclusion criteria, and after analysing the full text, another 74 articles were excluded. Eventually, 12 articles were included in the review. Conclusions The obtained results indicate that in the context of the research conducted in this field, three main concepts are mentioned: Differential Sensitivity, Sensory Processing Sensitivity and Biological Sensitivity to Context. Research proves the independence of the sensory processing sensitivity trait from other traits, such as neuroticism or introversion. The concept of environmental sensitivity demonstrates its application value, and psychometric tools are developed within its framework.

Abstract: pastor‐montero s.m., romero‐sánchez j.m., paramio‐cuevas j.c., hueso‐montoro c., paloma‐castro o., lillo‐crespo m., castro‐yuste c., toledano‐losa a.c., carnicer‐fuentes c., ortegón‐gallego j.a. & frandsen a.j. (2012) Tackling perinatal loss, a participatory action research approach: research protocol. Journal of Advanced Nursing 68 (11), 2578–2585. Abstract Aim.  The aim of this study was to promote changes to improve the care provided to parents who have experienced a perinatal loss through participatory action research. Background.  The birth of a child is a joyful event for most families, however, unfortunately some pregnancies end in loss. Perinatal loss creates a heavy emotional impact not only on parents but also on health professionals, where in most cases there is an evident lack of skills, strategies and resources to cope with these kinds of situations. Design.  Participatory action research is the methodology proposed to achieve the purpose of this study. Methods.  Participatory action research consists of five stages: outreach and awareness, induction, interaction, implementation and systematization. The working group will include professionals from the Mother and Child Unit for patients at a tertiary level public hospital in Spain. The duration of the study will be 3 years since the approval of the protocol in January 2011. The qualitative techniques used will include group dynamics such as the SWOT analysis the nominal group technique, focus groups and brainstorming, among others that will be recorded and transcribed, generating reports throughout the evolution of the group sessions and about the consensus reached. Content analysis will be conducted on the field diaries kept by the participants and researchers. This project has been funded by the Andalusian Regional Ministry of Health. Discussion.  Participatory action research is a methodological strategy that allows changes in clinical practice to conduct a comprehensive transformative action in the care process for perinatal loss.

Metoda W artykule przedstawiono badania jakościowe, które zostały przeprowadzone z wykorzystaniem systematycznego przeglądu literatury (PRISMA) w ram ach prac projektu „High sensitivity ‒ innovative module in human sciences” (HSP) nr 2020-1-PL01-KA203-082261. Badanie prowadzono z wykorzystaniem baz: PubMed, ScienceDirect i Scopus. Biological Sensitivity to Context).

Abstract: People with dementia (PwD) occupy around 25% of the hospital beds. Once PwD are admitted to hospitals, their cognitive impairment is not considered in most of the cases. Thus, it causes an impact on the development of the disease becoming a stressful situation as care plans are not adapted to PwD. The aim of this study was to explore the published core elements when designing a dementia care pathway for hospital settings. A scoping review was conducted to provide an overview of the available research evidence and identify the knowledge gaps regarding the topic. This review highlights person-centered care, compassionate care and end-of-life process as some of the key elements that should integrate the framework when designing a dementia care pathway. Architectonical outdoor and indoor hospital elements have also been found to be considered when adapting the healthcare context to PwD. Findings provide information about the key points to focus on to successfully design dementia interventions in hospital environments within available resources, mostly in those contexts in which national dementia plans are in its infancy. Hospitals should transform their patients’ routes and processes considering the increasing demographic changes of people with cognitive impairment.

Abstract: Healthcare improvement science (HIS) is the generation of knowledge to cultivate change towards improving health systems performance. Our purpose was to evaluate the experience of European nursing students after an intensive one-week summer program conducted in 2019 at the University of Alicante in Spain. The educational intervention combined theoretical and practical HIS contents, with students from different countries, educational programs, and health systems. The intervention was evaluated under a qualitative approach through the open discussion group technique based on the method of participatory action research (PAR), with a total of 25 students who reflected about their experiences and perceptions during the intervention. The responses were used to improve the program’s contents, its didactics, and organization. Nursing empowerment, professional recognition, and healthcare research were some of the seven main categories identified through the systematic content analysis method triangulated by three experienced researchers. According to the students’ replies, values like compassion, respect, or empathy were identified as key elements of care. Promoting international students’ networking emerged as the key to creating a positive provision for change and the generation of improvement initiatives. Building a HIS culture may potentially provide future healthcare professionals with critical thinking skills and the resources needed to improve their future work settings.
