    Abstract: Purpose. The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to comprehensively evaluate the efficacy and safety of electroacupuncture as an effective adjunctive therapy for patients with depression. Methods. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) about the treatment of depression by electroacupuncture therapy from inception to September 2021 were searched and collected in eight databases. HAMD, SDS, and Adverse Reactions were used as outcome indicators. The quality of relevant articles was evaluated using the Cochrane Collaboration’s risk of bias tool. The quality of evidence for each outcome was assessed through the Grading of Recommendations Assessment and the Development and Evaluation approach. Stata 15.0 software was used for data analysis. Results. A total of 16 depression-related RCTs were included in this meta-analysis. For the main outcome, electroacupuncture significantly reduced HAMD scores (I2:0.0%, SMD: −2.28% (95% CI−3.16 to −1.39)), and the quality of evidence was moderate. The improvement effect of electroacupuncture plus antidepressants was better than that of western drugs in patients with depression (I2:26.2%, SMD: −1.18% (95% CI−1.42 to −0.94)), and the quality of evidence was moderate. Electroacupuncture significantly reduced HAMD scores without significant heterogeneity (I2:0.0%, SMD: −3.76% (95%CI−5.78−1.73)). Studies with very low quality of evidence found that electroacupuncture was as effective as antidepressants in reducing SDS scores (I2:36.4%, WMD: −1.15% (95%CI−2.93–0.63)), and electroacupuncture was found to be more effective than sham electroacupuncture stimulation as well. Moderate quality evidence showed no statistical difference between electroacupuncture plus antidepressants/electroacupuncture and antidepressants (I2:0%, RR:1.05% (95%CI 0.73 to 1.53)). Conclusions. Our meta-analysis shows that electroacupuncture reduces HAMD scores. It is suggested to use electroacupuncture plus antidepressants to improve the curative effect and effectively reduce drug side effects.

    Abstract: Introduction. IgA nephropathy (IgAN) is a common issue. In China, Abelmoschus manihot (AM) is widely used in the treatment of IgAN. However, their combined effectiveness and safety for this purpose have not yet been explored. AM is an effective medicine for treating IgAN. This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of AM for IgAN. Materials and Methods. The Cochrane Library, PubMed, EMBASE, Allied and Complementary Medicine Database (AMED), Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM), Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure Database (CNKI), Chinese Science and Technique Journals Database (VIP), and the Wanfang Database were searched from their inceptions to June 2021. Random clinical trials (RCTs) comparing the effects of AM treatment in patients with IgAN were included. The study evaluated the efficacy or effectiveness of AM for IgAN and had clear outcome data, such as total effectiveness rate or proteinuria. Results. A total of 11 RCTs with 850 participants were included in this meta-analysis. The results of the meta-analysis showed that, compared with that of the conventional therapy alone, being combined with conventional treatment was significantly more effective for the total efficacy rate (OR = 4.33; 95% CI = 2.66, 7.04; P 〈 0.00001 ) and proteinuria (MD = −0.41 g/24 h; 95% CI = −0.44, −0.38; P 〈 0.00001 ) but had no effect on serum creatinine (Scr) (MD = −2.23 μmol/L; 95% CI = −5.90, 1.45; P = 0.24 ), eGFR (MD = −0.45 mL/min·1.73 m2; 95% CI = −1.24, 2.13; P = 0.60 ), Bun (MD = −0.22 mmol/L; 95% CI = −0.59, 0.14; P = 0.23 ), systolic blood pressure (MD = −0.04 mmHg; 95% CI = −2.59, 2.51; P = 0.98 ), diastolic blood pressure (MD = −0.34 mmHg, 95% CI = −1.65, 2.33; P = 0.74 ), systolic blood pressure (MD = −0.04 mmHg, 95% CI = −2.59, 2.51; P = 0.98 ), or serum albumin (MD = 1.70 g/L, 95% CI = −1.06, 4.45; P = 0.23 ). Conclusions. AM provided additional benefits to proteinuria individuals with IgAN. However, due to the high clinical heterogeneity and small sample size of the included trials, future studies should conduct more rigorous RCTs on the clinical efficacy and safety of AM and RCTs with a larger sample size involving multicenters.

    Abstract: Background. Catheter-related bladder discomfort (CRBD), an extremely distressing complication secondary to an indwelling urinary catheterization, is frequently reported in patients with transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), postoperatively. A prospective, randomized, controlled, double-blind study was designed to assess the efficacy of transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) as a treatment for CRBD in patients undergoing TURP. Methods. Seventy benign prostatic hyperplasia male patients undergoing TURP under general anesthesia requiring intraoperative urinary catheterization were enrolled for the trial. An experienced acupuncturist performed TEAS for 30 minutes before general anesthesia with acupoints RN7, RN6, RN5, RN4, and RN3 and bilateral BL32, BL33, and BL34. Mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR), oxygen saturation (SPO2), body temperature (T), and blood samples were collected during the surgery. A series of assessments included the incidence and severity of CRBD, postoperative pain, nausea and vomiting, and physical and mental state measurements. Results. The incidence of CRBD was significantly lower in TEAS group than in control group at the time T5 [9(26%) vs. 28(80%), P 〈 0.001 ], T9 [20(57%) vs. 28(80%), P = 0.039 ], T11 [7(20%) vs. 31(89%), P 〈 0.001 ], and T12 [4(11%) vs. 7(20%), P = 0.003 ]. The severity of CRBD was significantly lower in TEAS group than in control group at the time T5 [0 vs. 10 (29%), P 〈 0.001 ], T9 [2(6%) vs. 10(29%), P = 0.011 ], and T11 [0 vs .9(26%), P = 0.002 ]. The QoR-40 total score was higher in TEAS group at time T11 [191.7(4.4) vs. 189.1(4.3), P = 0.007 ] and T12 [195.3(1.9) vs. 193.3(3.0), P 〈 0.001 ]. The postoperative analgesia requirement was higher in control group [5.0(2.9) vs. 3.8(1.9), P = 0.045 ]. Conclusions. TEAS could significantly prevent the incidence and severity of CRBD, reduce the postoperative analgesic requirement in the early postoperative period, and promote the quality of early recovery in patients undergoing TURP.

    Abstract: Introduction. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) believes that the pathogenic factors of colorectal cancer (CRC) are “deficiency, dampness, stasis, and toxin,” and Fuzheng–Jiedu Decoction (FJD) can resist these factors. In this study, we want to find out the potential targets and pathways of FJD in the treatment of CRC and also explain from a scientific point of view that FJD multidrug combination can resist “deficiency, dampness, stasis, and toxin.” Methods. We get the composition of FJD from the TCMSP database and get its potential target. We also get the potential target of colorectal cancer according to the OMIM Database, TTD Database, GeneCards Database, CTD Database, DrugBank Database, and DisGeNET Database. Subsequently, PPI analysis, KEGG pathways analysis, and GO biological processes analysis were carried out for the target of FJD in the therapy of colorectal cancer. In addition, we have also built a relevant network diagram. Results. In this study, we identified four core compounds of FJD in the therapy of colorectal cancer, including quercetin, kaempferol, beta-sitosterol, and stigmasterol. At the same time, we also obtained 30 core targets, including STAT3, INS, TP53, VEGFA, AKT1, TNF, IL6, JUN, EGF, CASP3, MAPK3, MAPK1, MAPK8, SRC, IGF1, CCND1, ESR1, EGFR, PTEN, MTOR, FOS, PTGS2, CXCL8, HRAS, CDH1, BCL2L1, FN1, MMP9, ERBB2, and JAK2. FJD treatment of colorectal cancer mainly involves 112 KEGG pathways, including FoxO (hsa04068) signaling pathway, PI3K-Akt (hsa04151) signaling pathway, HIF-1 (hsa04066) signaling pathway, T cell receptor (hsa04660) signaling pathway, and ErbB (hsa04012) signaling pathway. At the same time, 330 GO biological processes were summarized, including cell proliferation, cell apoptosis, angiogenesis, inflammation, and immune. Conclusions. In this study, we found that FJD can regulate cell proliferation, apoptosis, inflammation and immunity, and angiogenesis through PI3K-Akt signaling pathway to play an anti-CRC effect.

    Abstract: Aframomum pruinosum seeds are traditionally used in Cameroon to treat cardiac palpitations. The present work evaluates the cardioprotective effects of the aqueous (AE) and ethanolic (EE) extracts from A. pruinosum seeds against isoproterenol-induced myocardial infarction. Male Wistar rats were pretreated for 14 days with AE or EE at doses of 75 and 150 mg/kg/day or propranolol (10 mg/kg/day). On days 15 and 16, they were injected subcutaneously with isoproterenol (85 mg/kg/day). Blood pressure and heart rate were weekly recorded by tail-cuff plethysmography during pretreatment and 24 hours after the second dose of isoproterenol. At the end of the treatment period, serum Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH), Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT), Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST), cardiac nitric oxide (NO), myeloperoxidase (MPO), and oxidative stress parameters (SOD, catalase, MDA, and GSH) were assayed. Sections of left ventricle tissue were subjected to histological analysis. The vasorelaxant effects of cumulative concentrations of AE or EE (3–300 µg/mL) were evaluated on intact or endothelium-denuded isolated aorta rings precontracted with noradrenaline (1 µM). The vasorelaxant effects of the plant extracts were also tested in the presence of Nω-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME; 100 µM). AE and EE significantly prevented blood pressure decrease and heart rate increase elicited by isoproterenol. Both plant extracts inhibited the increase in ALT, AST, NO, and MPO but did not prevent LDH surge. Oxidative stress parameters were improved following A. pruinosum pretreatment. AE and EE highly reduced cardiomyocyte necrosis and fibrosis but did not prevent leukocyte infiltration. Both extracts induced a concentration-dependent vasorelaxation that was significantly inhibited by the destruction of the endothelium and by L-NAME. Extracts of A. pruinosum exhibited cardioprotective effects, and EE was the most active. The cardioprotective effects of A. pruinosum extracts could be ascribed to their antioxidant, antinecrotic, and endothelium-dependent vasorelaxant effects.

    Abstract: Erectile dysfunction (ED) is one of the most common sexual dysfunctions in men. The prevalence of ED has been increasing in recent years, which has critically affected male reproductive health and quality of life. According to various guidelines, phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors are the most commonly recommended drugs for treating ED. However, many patients turn to alternative therapies because of adverse reactions, such as headache, and the poor efficacy of these drugs. Acupuncture is a long-established treatment in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and has been approved by the World Health Organization for improving penile erection as well as other discomforts in patients. However, previous systematic reviews have not discussed the characteristics and the related mechanisms of acupuncture treatment. Therefore, this study focuses on summarizing the characteristics and advantages of TCM in acupuncture treatment for ED based on relevant literature and on predicting and analyzing the related mechanisms.

    Abstract: Aims. The study aims to explore the effects of the single-nucleotide polymorphism of miR-27a and its expression in Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori)-related diseases and the relationship between gastric pathology and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Methods. Subjects were classified into six histopathological groups and five TCM syndrome groups. All specimens underwent H. pylori detection through rapid urease test and methylene blue staining. Histopathological characteristics were observed by hematoxylin-eosin. The expression of miR-27a and its genotype were, respectively, detected by Quantitative Real-Time PCR and direct sequencing. Results. H. pylori promoted the malignant evolution of gastric mucosa and were involved in the formation of TCM syndrome. In H. pylori-positive patients, the frequency of miR-27a CT genotype at the rs895819 locus and its expression in the gastric cancer group were higher than those in other pathological groups. TCM syndrome had a close relationship with histopathological changes, and patients with spleen-qi deficiency syndrome had a higher risk of gastric cancer than other syndromes, regardless of H. pylori infection. Conclusion. The C allele at miR-27a rs895819 locus may be an oncogene in gastric cancer. High levels of miR-27a could play an important role in gastric malignant evolution, especially cancerization. There is a certain connection between TCM syndrome and pathological changes of the gastric mucosa to some extent, where patients with SQD syndrome had a higher risk of GC.
