    Abstract: Despite the widespread application of Autonomous Vehicles (AV) to various services, there has been relatively little research carried out on pedestrian–AV interaction and trust within the context of service provided by AV. This study explores the communication design strategy promoting a pedestrian’s trust and positive attitude to driverless services within the context of pedestrian–AV interaction using non-verbal social cues. An empirical study was conducted with an experimental VR environment to measure participants’ intimacy, trust, and brand attitude toward AV. Further understanding of their social interaction experiences was explored through semi-structured interviews. As a result of the study, the interaction effect of social cues was found, and it was revealed that brand attitude was formed by the direct effects of intimacy and trust as well as the indirect effects of intimacy through trust’s mediation. Furthermore, ‘Conceptual Definition of Space’ was identified to generate differences in the interplay among intimacy, trust, and brand attitude according to social cues. Quantitative and qualitative results were synthesized to discuss implications considering the service context. Practical implications were also addressed suggesting specific design strategies for utilizing the sociality of AV.

    Abstract: In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, different types of vaccines, such as inactive, live-attenuated, messenger RNA (mRNA), and protein subunit, have been developed against SARS-CoV-2. This has unintentionally created a unique scenario where heterologous prime-boost vaccination against a single virus has been administered to a large human population. Here, we aimed to analyze whether the immunization order of vaccine types influences the efficacy of heterologous prime-boost vaccination, especially mRNA and protein-based vaccines. We developed a new mRNA vaccine encoding the hemagglutinin (HA) glycoprotein of the influenza virus using the 3′-UTR and 5′-UTR of muscle cells (mRNA-HA) and tested its efficacy by heterologous immunization with an HA protein vaccine (protein-HA). The results demonstrated higher IgG2a levels and hemagglutination inhibition titers in the mRNA-HA priming/protein-HA boosting (R-P) regimen than those induced by reverse immunization (protein-HA priming/mRNA-HA boosting, P-R). After the viral challenge, the R-P group showed lower virus loads and less inflammation in the lungs than the P-R group did. Transcriptome analysis revealed that the heterologous prime-boost groups had differentially activated immune response pathways, according to the order of immunization. In summary, our results demonstrate that the sequence of vaccination is critical to direct desired immune responses. This study demonstrates the potential of a heterologous vaccination strategy using mRNA and protein vaccine platforms against viral infection.

    Abstract: 265 Background: Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) trial 85-31 has shown that addition of androgen deprivation therapy to radiation therapy (RT+ADT) for patients with locally advanced prostate cancer benefits local control and progression-free survival compared to RT alone. However, the survival gain may be diluted with increased toxicity of hormone manipulation. There is a need to develop new decision analysis methods to incorporate survival time and quality of life (QoL) adjusting for various health states and persistent complications. Methods: We previously developed “quality-adjusted survival analysis using duration” (QASAD) and “quality-adjusted survival analysis using probability” (QASAP) to estimate quality-adjusted survival time. The QASAD uses the median duration in each state to weight the utilities, while the QASAP uses the proportional probability of being in each state for weighting. The survival and complication rates of RTOG 85-31 were reconstructed based on published Kaplan-Meier survival curves, and the utility values for states were obtained from the literature. Probabilistic sensitivity analysis was applied using Monte Carlo simulation with 1000 simulated samples. Results: QASAD and QASAP showed that the quality-adjusted life year (QALY) values in RT+ADT were generally higher than those in RT. In probabilistic sensitivity analysis, QASAD resulted in 4.93 (95% bootstrapped confidence interval [CI] = 4.12 to 5.71) for RT and 5.60 (95% CI = 4.30 to 6.48) for RT+ADT. QASAP resulted in 4.85 (95% CI = 4.16 to 5.39) for RT and 4.96 (95% CI = 3.73 to 5.78) for RT+ADT. Conclusions: The decision analyses showed that RT+ADT provided slightly better quality-adjusted survival outcome after treatment than RT alone. The QASAD and QASAP methods may help the decision of optimal treatment balancing between survival gain and unfavorable quality of life. [Table: see text]

    Abstract: There are conflicting data on the association of vancomycin MIC (VAN-MIC) with treatment outcomes in Staphylococcus aureus infections. We investigated the relationship between high VAN-MIC and 30-day mortality and identified the risk factors for mortality in a large cohort of patients with invasive S. aureus (ISA) infections, defined as the isolation of S. aureus from a normally sterile site. Over a 2-year period, 1,027 adult patients with ISA infections were enrolled in 10 hospitals, including 673 (66%) patients with methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) infections. There were 200 (19.5%) isolates with high VAN-MIC (≥1.5 mg/liter) by Etest and 87 (8.5%) by broth microdilution (BMD). The all-cause 30-day mortality rate was 27.4%. High VAN-MIC by either method was not associated with all-cause 30-day mortality, and this finding was consistent across MIC methodologies and methicillin susceptibilities. We conclude that high VAN-MIC is not associated with increased risk of all-cause 30-day mortality in ISA infections. Our data support the view that VAN-MIC alone is not sufficient evidence to change current clinical practice.

    Abstract: Occupational attainment, which represents middle-age cognitive activities, is a known proxy marker of cognitive reserve for Alzheimer's disease. Previous genome-wide association studies have identified numerous genetic variants and revealed the genetic architecture of educational attainment, another marker of cognitive reserve. However, the genetic architecture and heritability for occupational attainment remain elusive. We performed a large-scale genome-wide association study of occupational attainment with 248 847 European individuals from the UK Biobank using the proportional odds logistic mixed model method. In this analysis, we defined occupational attainment using the classified job levels formulated in the UK Standard Occupational Classification system considering the individual professional skill and academic level. We identified 30 significant loci (P & lt; 5 × 10−8); 12 were novel variants, not associated with other traits. Among them, four lead variants were associated with genes expressed in brain tissues by expression quantitative trait loci mapping from 10 brain regions: rs13002946, rs3741368, rs11654986 and rs1627527. The single nucleotide polymorphism-based heritability was estimated to be 8.5% (standard error of the mean = 0.004) and partitioned heritability was enriched in the CNS and brain tissues. Genetic correlation analysis showed shared genetic backgrounds between occupational attainment and multiple traits, including education, intelligence, leisure activities, life satisfaction and neuropsychiatric disorders. In two-sample Mendelian randomization analysis, we demonstrated that high occupation levels were associated with reduced risk for Alzheimer's disease [odds ratio (OR) = 0.78, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.65–0.92 in inverse variance weighted method; OR = 0.73, 95% CI = 0.57–0.92 in the weighted median method]. This causal relationship between occupational attainment and Alzheimer's disease was robust in additional sensitivity analysis that excluded potentially pleiotropic single nucleotide polymorphisms (OR = 0.72, 95% CI = 0.57–0.91 in the inverse variance weighted method; OR = 0.72, 95% CI = 0.53–0.97 in the weighted median method). Multivariable Mendelian randomization confirmed that occupational attainment had an independent effect on the risk for Alzheimer’s disease even after taking educational attainment into account (OR = 0.72, 95% CI = 0.54–0.95 in the inverse variance weighted method; OR = 0.68, 95% CI = 0.48–0.97 in the weighted median method). Overall, our analyses provide insights into the genetic architecture of occupational attainment and demonstrate that occupational attainment is a potential causal protective factor for Alzheimer's disease as a proxy marker of cognitive reserve.

    Abstract: A thorough understanding of the morphology of the lamina of the second cervical vertebra (C2) is important for safe C2 translaminar screw placement. Although anatomical characteristics of the C2 lamina have been widely documented, individual differences in morphology have not been addressed. The aim of this study was to morphometrically analyze the cross-sectional shape of the C2 lamina and classify the shape to describe individual differences. Morphometric analysis was conducted on 145 three-dimensional C2 models based on computerized tomography images from Korean adult cadavers. Several parameters were measured on a cross-section image of the lamina model. Based on numerical criteria, all of the C2 lamina’s cross-sectional shapes could be categorized into three distinctive morphological types: pyriform, ellipse, and obpyriform shapes. We confirmed that most Koreans can accommodate C2 translaminar screw placement with a lower limit of the 95% confidence interval of thickness measured at 6.26 mm. Morphometric analysis suggested that the obpyriform-shaped lamina (4.48%) is likely to require screw trajectory adjustment to avoid cortical breakout of the screw. Our results will enhance current anatomical understanding of the C2 lamina and thus facilitate safer C2 translaminar screw placement.

    Abstract: Perovskite is attracting considerable interest because of its excellent semiconducting properties and optoelectronic performance. In particular, lead perovskites have been used extensively in photovoltaic, photodetectors, thin-film transistors, and various electronic applications. On the other hand, the elimination of lead is essential because of its strong toxicity. This paper reports the synthesis of lead-free calcium titanate perovskite (CaTiO3) using a solution-processed combustion method. The chemical and morphological properties of CaTiO3 were examined as a function of its thickness by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and ultraviolet–visible spectrophotometry. The analysis showed that thicker films formed by a cumulative coating result in larger grains and more oxygen vacancies. Furthermore, thickness-dependent hysteresis behaviors were examined by fabricating a metal-CaTiO3-metal structure. The electrical hysteresis could be controlled over an extremely low voltage operation, as low as 100 mV, by varying the grain size and oxygen vacancies.
