Abstract: Background/Aim. The shortcomings of the orthopantomography (OPG) method and radiographic misinterpretations may lead to poor treatment planning and complications during or after the third molar extraction. The aim of this study was to determine the validity and reliability of OPG findings concerning post-extraction wisdom tooth root morphology, as well as whether the degree of clinical expertise affects assessment accuracy. Methods. The cross-sectional study included 200 patients who were referred for third molar extraction. Preoperative OPGs were evaluated by examiners classified by their level of experience into three groups: students, residents, and professors. True root morphologies were recorded after the extraction, and the accuracy of the assessment was evaluated using various statistical tests. Results. The majority of assessments were accurate for the lower and upper third molars with a single root. The professor group was the most accurate when compared to the other two groups (p = 0.0015). Weighted Kappa values for intra-respondent accuracy gradually increased from the student to professor group (0.06, 0.28, 0.34, respectively). The highest discrepancy in inter-respondent accuracy was determined between the student and professor groups (poor; ?w = 0.25584). Conclusion. In this study are not achieved results which confirm reliability of panoramic acquisition for detection of accurate third molars root morphology. The level of clinical experience affects diagnostic accuracy, but complex clinical cases should be evaluated by different methods.

Abstract: Introduction/Objective. Success of guided bone regeneration depends on the size and morphology of defect, characteristics of barrier membranes and adequate angiogenesis. The aim of the study was to reveal impact of three different collagen membranes on angiogenesis and bone production in critical-size defects. Methods. Defects were created in rabbit calvarias, filled with bovine bone graft and randomly covered with one of three investigated collagen membranes (Biogide ? BG, Heart ? PC, Mucograft ? MG) or left without a membrane for the control group (C). After two and four weeks of healing, a total of 10 animals were sacrificed for histological and histomorphometric analysis of angiogenesis, bone regeneration, and inflammatory response. Results. In the early healing phase, the highest values of trabecular thickness and trabecular area were recorded with PC and BG membranes, respectively. After four weeks, significantly improved bone healing was noted in the MG group, as well as significantly pronounced inflammation. Initially, vessel density was significantly higher in the C group compared to all three membranes. After four weeks, significantly better results were observed in the MG compared to the other groups, BG compared to the rest of groups, and between PC and C groups. Conclusion. The use of collagen membranes significantly affects angiogenesis, reducing it in the early and enhancing it at the later healing phase. All three tested membranes in combination with bone graft significantly improved the amount of regenerated bone. Among the investigated groups, MG favored more pronounced angiogenic, osteogenic, and inflammatory response in the observation period of four weeks.

Abstract: Background/Aim: The aim of this study was to examine prevalence of different Candida spp. at diabetics and nondiabetics wearing dentures without clinical signs of Denture Stomatitis (DS) and to study if some local and systematic factors are confounders for harboring Candida at these subjects. Material and Methods: Total of 60 subjects wearing partial or complete upper acrylic denture having at least half of palatal mucosa covered by denture were selected and stratified into three experimental groups: systematically health subjects; patients with diagnosed Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) and good glycoregulation; and T2D subjects with poorly regulated blood sugar level. Cotton swab samples were obtained from each patient from hard palate mucosa and denture surface. Swab cultures were made on Sabouraud dextrose agar and ChromAgar Media for distinciton of various Candida spp. Density growth was also measured. Results: Frequency of Candida spp. findings were similar between groups. At healthy subjects, only C.albicans was detected. At diabetics, C.albicans was the most common isolated species, followed by C.glabrata and C.tropicalis. Negative finding of yeasts on palatal mucosa, but positive on denture surface were detected at all groups, with the highest frequency (33.4%) at diabetics with poor glycoregulation. Denture surface was heavier colonized than hard palate mucosa. Duration of diabetes in years were only independent predictors for harboring Candida spp. at denture surface (Exp B=1.186, CI=1.047-1.344, p=0.007). Conclusions: Prosthesis of denture wearers without DS may serve as reservoir of Candida spp. Presence of more pathogenic and resistant non-albicans species are related to diabetics, even without clinical signs of DS.

Abstract: Introduction Removable partial denture (RPD) is common treatment option for unilateral partially edentulous patients not indicated for implant therapy. Unilateral complex partial denture (UCPD) could be an alternative approach to RPD treatment, but there is lack of evidence about UCPD treatment outcomes during the long-term clinical performance. The aim of this this study was to use periodontal, prosthodontic and participant satisfaction measures to evaluate the long-term clinical performance of UCPD. Material and methods This 5 year follow-up clinical study evaluated pocket probing depth (PPD) and vertical clinical attachment loss (CAL-V) of direct abutment (DA), indirect abutment (IA) and control teeth (CT). Also complications and failures of UCPD were analysed using questionnaire of participant satisfaction with UCPD (stability, comfort and manipulation). Results Evaluation of data showed that CAL-V and PPD significantly increased over time for DA, IA and CT (p 〈 0.0001), but the tooth function (DA, IA and CT) did not significantly influence changes in PPD and CAL-V. The fracture of one abutment tooth and increase of the number of artificial teeth deformations (p=0.039) were observed after 5 years. Participant satisfaction with denture after 1 year and 5 years vs. 7 days was significantly improved. Conclusion Despite limitations of this clinical study and assuming regular oral maintenance with proper indication, UCPD might be considered as good treatment option for Kennedy II rehabilitation in patients not indicated for implant therapy or who cannot tolerate extensive RPD design.

Abstract: The ageist attitudes among dental clinicians may result in inadequate treatment planning and reduce quality of life for older adults. This study aimed at performing a preliminary validation of an ageism scale for dental students (ASDS) in Serbia (ASDS‐Serb). Methods and Results The 27‐item ASDS was translated from English into Serbian and completed by 129 dental students. Principal component analysis (PCA), Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), internal consistency reliability and discriminant validity were estimated. PCA produced a 17‐item scale distributed into five factors that explain 64.24% of the total variance. All items showed high to moderate reliability (0.50–0.83). CFA indicates an acceptable model fit with significant standardized factor loadings ranging from 0.14–0.99. The first factor dealt with negative views of older adults’ life and dental treatment, the second factor related to ethical values about older people, the third factor compared younger and older adults in dental care and the fourth factor related to difficulties in medical history taking. The fifth factor related to perceptions of oral health and treatment of older adults. Discriminant validity revealed significant differences related to the semester of studies, gender and having older people in the family. Conclusion The preliminary validation of the ASDS‐Serb resulted in a 17‐item scale distributed into the five factors with acceptable validity and reliability.

Abstract: The subgingival biofilm, as the most complex microbial community, has been proven to be reservoir of Candida spp. The main concept of this study was to investigate if there is a difference between the sensitivity of Candida albicans (C. albicans) isolated from tongue and subgingival areas of periodontitis patients to antifungal agents. The aim of the study was to determine: (1) the distribution of different Candida species in the tongue and subgingival samples of periodontitis patients; (2) the susceptibility of Candida albicans strains from tongue and subgingival biofilm to the effects of commonly used antifungal agents: fluconazole, amphotericin B and itraconazole; (3) the correlation between the susceptibility of Candida albicans and clinical periodontal parameters. Tongue and subgingival biofilm samples of periodontitis subjects (N = 163) were examined. Susceptibility was tested when the same Candida species was isolated from both sites (17 subjects). Candida spp. were isolated in 23.3% of tongue and 21.5% of the subgingival samples. All isolates were susceptible to amphotericin B, while 64.71% of tongue and 52.94% of subgingival isolates were susceptible to fluconazole. A low frequency of itraconazole susceptibility was observed for tongue (17.64%) and subgingival isolates (11.76%). The correlations between full-mouth plaque score and Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) for tongue isolates were strongly positive for all antimycotics. Positive correlation was also observed between moderate periodontal destruction and MICs for tongue and subgingival isolates. The susceptibility of C. albicans to antifungals correlate with oral hygiene and moderate periodontal destruction. There is no difference in antifungal susceptibility between tongue and subgingival isolates.

Abstract: (1) Background: Hoarseness is not uncommon in children, especially at school age, as communication with peers is intensified. It is caused by improper use or overuse of the vocal apparatus. (2) Methods: The study included 85 hoarse children aged 6–12 (study group) and 240 healthy children (control group) of the same age. The study group underwent a detailed medical history, phoniatric examination, larynx fiber endoscopy, allergy treatment and the Pediatric Voice-Related Quality of Life questionnaire, modified by Jasmina Stojanovic. (3) Results: Our modified questionnaire revealed the significance of parental perception of a voice disorder in a child after organized activities. Using our modified questionnaire, we were able to determine the most frequent form of a voice disorder in children—speaking too loudly—is often neglected by the environment and can lead to an overall lower life quality. (4) Conclusions: As the presence of hoarseness impairs the quality of life in the pediatric population, awareness of a voice disorder must be recognized and treated on time to overcome the possible side effects on a child’s psychological and emotional development.
