    Abstract: A 51-year-old woman who had lung adenocarcinoma was found to have a high uptake area over the right femoral neck by means of bone scintigraphy, suggesting a suspicious bony metastasis. 18F-FDG PET/CT was arranged, and showed an FDG-avid lesion in the same region. However, after augmented CT, a well-defined ground-glass lesion with circular calcification was found, which is the favored benign lesion of fibrous dysplasia. The following imaging of bone scintigraphy and 18F-FDG PET/CT presented no apparent change. This case demonstrates that the treatment scheme should not be solely guided by abnormalities in scintigraphy. Additional imaging is recommended for accurate staging or development of an appropriate treatment plan.

    Abstract: 99m Tc-TRODAT-1 SPECT/CT has been used to evaluate parkinsonian disorders. We present an interesting case of a 63-year-old woman with progressive tremulousness over the left side of the body for 6 months. Bilateral thalamic glioma with reduced uptake was shown on 99m Tc-TRODAT-1 SPECT/CT. Secondary parkinsonism was impressed in this case.

    Abstract: Heat stroke (HS) is a life-threatening illness and defined as when body temperature elevates above 40°C accompanied by the systemic inflammatory response syndrome that results in multiple organ dysfunctions. α -Lipoic acid (ALA) acts as a cofactor of mitochondrial enzymes and exerts anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties in a variety of diseases. This study investigates the beneficial effects of ALA on myocardial injury and organ damage caused by experimental HS and further explores its underlying mechanism. Male Wistar rats were exposed to 42°C until their rectal core temperature reached 42.9°C and ALA was pretreared 40 or 80 mg/kg (i.v.) 1.5 h prior to heat exposure. Results showed that HS-induced lethality and hypothermia were significantly alleviated by ALA treatment that also improved plasma levels of CRE, LDH, and CPK and myocardial injury biomarkers myoglobin and troponin. In addition, ALA reduced cardiac superoxide anion formation and protein expression of cleaved caspase 3 caused by HS. Proinflammatory cytokine TNF- α and NF- κ B pathways were significantly reduced by ALA treatment which may be associated with the upregulation of Hsp70. ALA significantly increased the Atg5-12 complex and LC3B II/LC3B I ratio, whereas the p62 and p-mTOR expression was attenuated in HS rats, indicating the activation of autophagy by ALA. In conclusion, ALA ameliorated the deleterious effects of HS by exerting antioxidative and anti-inflammatory capacities. Induction of Hsp70 and activation of autophagy contribute to the protective effects of ALA in HS-induced myocardial injury.

    Abstract: Fulminant myocarditis in children was rare during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, but it had the potential for high morbidity and mortality. We describe the clinical course of a previously healthy 9-month-old young male infant who rapidly deteriorated into cardiogenic shock due to coronavirus disease 2019-related fulminant myocarditis. He developed severe heart failure and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome that were treated promptly with central venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and continuous venovenous hemofiltration. He made a good recovery without significant morbidity.

    Abstract: Kawasaki disease (KD) is the most common form of acquired pediatric cardiac disease in the developed world. However, its etiology is still unclear. Epidemiological studies have shown that air pollution is a plausible risk factor in stimulating oxidative stress, inducing inflammation and causing autoimmune diseases. This study aims to assess the connections between prenatal and early life air pollution exposure to the incidence of KD. The main data source of this nationwide longitudinal study was the National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) of Taiwan. NHIRD was linked with Taiwan Maternal and Child Health Database to establish the link between mothers and children. In total, 4192 KD cases involving children under 6 years of age were identified between January 2004 and December 2010. Children in the control group were randomly selected at a 1:4 ratio and matched using their age and index year. Integrated data for the air pollutants were obtained from 71 Environmental Protection Agency monitoring stations across Taiwan. Patients who had main admission diagnosis of KD and subsequently received intravenous immunoglobulin treatment were defined as incidence cases. Ambient exposure, including pollutant standards index (PSI), carbon monoxide (CO), nitric oxide (NO), nitric dioxide (NO 2 ), and nitrogen oxide (NOx) during pregnancy were all positively associated with KD incidence. Conversely, ozone (O 3 ) exposure had a negative correlation. Exposure to CO, NO, NO 2, and NOx after childbirth remained consistent with regards to having a positive association with KD incidence. Exposure to PSI and O 3 after delivery displayed no significant association with KD. Both prenatal and postnatal cumulative CO, NO, NO 2 , and NOx exposure had a dose dependent effect towards increasing KD incidence. Certain prenatal and early life air pollutant exposure may increase the incidence of KD.

    Abstract: Tracking kinematic details of motor behaviors is a foundation to study the neuronal mechanism and biology of motor control. However, most of the physiological motor behaviors and movement disorders, such as gait, balance, tremor, dystonia, and myoclonus, are highly dependent on the overall momentum of the whole‐body movements. Therefore, tracking the targeted movement and overall momentum simultaneously is critical for motor control research, but it remains an unmet need. Here, we introduce the intrinsic oscillatory property (IOP), a fundamental mechanical principle of physics, as a method for motion tracking in a force plate. The overall kinetic energy of animal motions can be transformed into the oscillatory amplitudes at the designed IOP frequency of the force plate, while the target movement has its own frequency features and can be tracked simultaneously. Using action tremor as an example, we reported that force plate‐based IOP approach has superior performance and reliability in detecting both tremor severity and tremor frequency, showing a lower level of coefficient of variation (CV) compared with video‐ and accelerometer‐based motion tracking methods and their combination. Under the locomotor suppression effect of medications, therapeutic effects on tremor severity can still be quantified by dynamically adjusting the overall locomotor activity detected by IOP. We further validated IOP method in optogenetic‐induced movements and natural movements, confirming that IOP can represent the intensity of general rhythmic and nonrhythmic movements, thus it can be generalized as a common approach to study kinematics.

    Abstract: Magnolol (MG) is the main active compound of Magnolia officinalis and exerts a wide range of biological activities. In this study, we investigated the effects of MG using tyloxapol (Tylo)-induced (200 mg/kg, i.p.) hyperlipidemia in rats and palmitic acid (PA)-stimulated (0.3 mM) HepG2 cells. Our results showed that Tylo injection significantly increased plasma levels of triglyceride and cholesterol as well as superoxide anion in the livers, whereas MG pretreatment reversed these changes. MG reduced hepatic lipogenesis by attenuating sterol regulatory element-binding protein-1c (SREBP-1c) and fatty acid synthase (FAS) proteins and Srebp-1, Fas, Acc, and Cd36 mRNA expression as well as upregulated the lipolysis-associated genes Hsl, Mgl, and Atgl. Furthermore, MG reduced plasma interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and protein expression of NLR family pyrin domain-containing 3 (NLRP3), apoptosis-associated speck-like protein (ASC), and caspase 1 as well as upregulated nuclear translocation of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and induction of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) in hepatocytes of Tylo-treated rats. Enhanced autophagic flux by elevation of autophagy related protein 5-12 (ATG5-12), ATG7, Beclin1, and microtubule-associated protein light chain 3 B II (LC3BII)/LC3BI ratio, and reduction of sequestosome-1 (SQSTM1/p62) and phosphorylation of mTOR was observed by MG administration. However, autophagy inhibition with 3-methyladenine (3-MA) in HepG2 cells drastically abrogated the MG-mediated suppression of inflammation and lipid metabolism. In conclusion, MG inhibited hepatic steatosis-induced NLRP3 inflammasome activation through the restoration of autophagy to promote HO-1 signaling capable of ameliorating oxidative stress and inflammatory responses.
