    Abstract: The critique of fossil fuel regimes has been a foundational concern for the field of political ecology, in its drives to expose the injustices and harms of energy extractivism and its early warnings of the climate crisis. However, it is increasingly evident that renewable energy sources and their infrastructures will carry their own costs and trade-offs, and that critique, resistance and alternative movement-building are needed to forge a truly just renewable energy transition. This theme issue underlines the many ways in which political ecology is well-positioned to lead critical and engaged scholarship in support of energy/climate justice. In this introduction and survey, we draw on new research collected here to reflect on political ecology's distinctive analytical capacities and forms of praxis for this task. We argue that the collection advances political ecology's intellectual and political purchase on renewable transition in several crucial ways. These include (1) Theorizing Renewables-Driven Land Transformations, (2) Advancing Industrial Political Ecologies of Renewables, (3) Locating Power within Technical and Artifactual Politics and (4) Generating Knowledge and Tools for Just Transitions. We conclude with reflections on further pressing concerns for the field: for example, rising debates over scale, ownership and accountability models within renewable energy justice and democracy movements and critical conversations growing around renewable energy's own extraction geographies and diverse forms of racialization.

    Abstract: What will the low-carbon cities of tomorrow be made from? We see an unexpected answer today in the return of ‘premodern’/‘preindustrial’ materials to central cities and skylines. Champions of new mass timber materials have driven a race on iconic ‘plyscrapers’ and, increasingly, novel systems of industrial prefabrication. Drawing on the notion of sociotechnical imaginaries, we explore how advocates attempt to ‘fix’ desirable future cities and urban bioeconomies through this biomaterial. In doing so, we suggest that mass timber's emergent sociotechnical imaginary embodies a distinct kind of futuring, which we label ‘nostalgic futurism’, conjoining ‘technofuturist’ and ‘nostalgic-reparative’ visions. We find that, on the one hand, mass timber proponents embrace competitive novelty, uniting drives for architectural distinction and high-tech disruption. On the other hand, aesthetic advocates put forward visions around the material's more traditional premodern/preindustrial associations, in narratives of biophilic design which claim therapeutic benefits of contact with visible nature in buildings. These conjoined forward- and backward-looking compulsions pose tensions and internal contradictions. Nostalgic-reparative visions risk greenwashing and reproducing unequal access to environmental amenities, while reinscribing regressive appeals to an imagined past. Meanwhile, technofuturist drives extend late capitalist growth imperatives and pressures for accelerated material churn in both forests and urban centres—while obscuring tough questions about mass timber buildings’ expected lifetimes and claims for long-term carbon sequestration. Conversely, a reimagined mass timber project might support more progressive movements for climate restoration, repair, and reparations.

    Abstract: We conducted a large-scale investigation of the systemic and adipose tissue-specific alterations in a clinical population of burn patients to identify factors that may influence hypermetabolism. Background: Previous research has identified chronic disturbances in adipose tissue inflammation, lipolysis, and browning, which may drive the perpetuation of hypermetabolism following the severe adrenergic stress of a burn injury. Given that adipose tissue is thought to be a central node in the regulation of systemic metabolism, we believe that systematically delineating the pathologic role of adipose tissue postburn, will lead to the identification of novel interventions to mitigate morbidity and mortality from severe burns. Methods: This was a single-institution cohort study, which obtained plasma and subcutaneous adipose tissue samples from severely burn adult patients over various time points during acute hospitalization. Whole-body clinical, metabolic, and inflammatory mediators were assessed in plasma, while genetic analyses through RT-qPCR and single-nuclei RNA sequencing were conducted in adipose tissue. Results: Systemic inflammation and adrenergic stress increase IL-6 signaling, lipolysis, browning, and adipokine dysfunction in the adipose tissue of adult burn patients, which may further propagate the long-term hypermetabolic response. Moreover, using single-nuclei RNA sequencing, we provide the first comprehensive characterization of alterations in the adipose tissue microenvironment occurring at acute and chronic stages postburn. Conclusion: We provide novel insight toward the effect of burns on adipokine release, inflammatory signaling pathways, and adipose heterogeneity over the trajectory of acute and chronic stages.

    Abstract: Sepsis has become the leading cause of death in burn patients. Furthermore, sepsis and septic complications result in significant morbidities and longer hospitalization, which has profound impacts on the healthcare system. Despite this, sepsis in burn patients is surprisingly poorly understood and characterized. This retrospective, single-institution cohort study aimed to increase our understanding of the septic response after burns. We hypothesized that different sepsis definitions will results in distinctive septic trajectories and biochemical patterns after injury. Sepsis was defined by our burn center–specific prospective definition, the American Burn Association criteria, Sepsis-3 criteria, and the Mann-Salinas criteria. Applying these definitions, we compared clinical, metabolic, and inflammatory markers in septic and nonseptic burn patients. We found that the Sepsis-3 criteria are the most reliable screening tool used before clinical diagnoses for detecting sepsis trajectories and biochemical patterns. Moreover, we characterized distinct temporal alterations in biomarkers during the pre– and post–septic periods in burn patients, which may be incorporated into future sepsis definitions to improve the accuracy of a sepsis diagnosis in burn patients.

    Abstract: Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) have resisted explanation and have received little formal scientific attention for 75 years. A primary objective of the Galileo Project is to build an integrated software and instrumentation system designed to conduct a multimodal census of aerial phenomena and to recognize anomalies. Here we present key motivations for the study of UAP and address historical objections to this research. We describe an approach for highlighting outlier events in the high-dimensional parameter space of our census measurements. We provide a detailed roadmap for deciding measurement requirements, as well as a science traceability matrix (STM) for connecting sought-after physical parameters to observables and instrument requirements. We also discuss potential strategies for deciding where to locate instruments for development, testing, and final deployment. Our instrument package is multimodal and multispectral, consisting of (1) wide-field cameras in multiple bands for targeting and tracking of aerial objects and deriving their positions and kinematics using triangulation; (2) narrow-field instruments including cameras for characterizing morphology, spectra, polarimetry, and photometry; (3) passive multistatic arrays of antennas and receivers for radar-derived range and kinematics; (4) radio spectrum analyzers to measure radio and microwave emissions; (5) microphones for sampling acoustic emissions in the infrasonic through ultrasonic frequency bands; and (6) environmental sensors for characterizing ambient conditions (temperature, pressure, humidity, and wind velocity), as well as quasistatic electric and magnetic fields, and energetic particles. The use of multispectral instruments and multiple sensor modalities will help to ensure that artifacts are recognized and that true detections are corroborated and verifiable. Data processing pipelines are being developed that apply state-of-the-art techniques for multi-sensor data fusion, hypothesis tracking, semi-supervised classification, and outlier detection.

    Abstract: Glucagon, a hormone released from pancreatic α-cells, is critical for maintaining euglycemia and plays a key role in the pathophysiology of diabetes. To stimulate the development of new classes of therapeutic agents targeting glucagon release, key α-cell signaling pathways that regulate glucagon secretion need to be identified. Here, we focused on the potential importance of α-cell G s signaling on modulating α-cell function. Studies with α-cell-specific mouse models showed that activation of α-cell G s signaling causes a marked increase in glucagon secretion. We also found that intra-islet adenosine plays an unexpected autocrine/paracrine role in promoting glucagon release via activation of α−cell G s -coupled A 2A adenosine receptors. Studies with α-cell-specific Gα s knockout mice showed that α-cell G s also plays an essential role in stimulating the activity of the Gcg gene, thus ensuring proper islet glucagon content. Our data suggest that α-cell enriched G s -coupled receptors represent potential targets for modulating α-cell function for therapeutic purposes.
