Kurzfassung: We show that if among the tested hypotheses the number of true hypotheses is not equal to the number of false hypotheses, then Neyman-Pearson theory of testing hypotheses does not warrant minimal epistemic reliability (the feature of driving to true conclusions more often than to false ones). We also argue that N-P does not protect from the possible negative effects of the pragmatic value-laden unequal setting of error probabilities on N-P’s epistemic reliability. Most importantly, we argue that in the case of a negative impact no methodological adjustment is available to neutralize it, so in such cases the discussed pragmatic-value-ladenness of N-P inevitably compromises the goal of attaining truth.

Kurzfassung: During warfare and acts of terrorism an extreme threat to vehicles and other high-value assets comes from armour-piercing projectiles. Under these conditions, defence systems should include devices capable of rapid detection of these threats. Defence assets should also be provided with counter-projectile systems capable of destroying incoming armour-piercing projectiles at a safe distance from the asset to be protected. This paper describes the concept of a system comprising of a lightweight short-range radar and a counter-projectile for countering armour-piercing projectiles. The purpose of the radar is to monitor the environment and search for incoming armour-piercing projectiles. When an armour-piercing projectile is detected in a designated monitoring area, an automatic command is given for the counter-projectile launcher to be fired. The counter-projectile deployed can be equipped with a single or multi-sensor detection head unit and an explosive payload mo dule, both being the primary components of the warhead. When the signal analysis blocks interfaced with the detection head determine that the armour-piercing projectile to be struck down is in the target position in relation to the counter-projectile deployed, they automatically command the explosive payload module to detonate. The components of the system concept were tested in proving ground conditions. The successful results of these tests confirmed the validity of the solutions initially adopted and the execution of the individual systems.

Kurzfassung: Locating active radars in real environmental conditions is a very important and complex task. The efficiency of the direction finding (DF) of ground-based radars and other microwave emitters using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) is dependent on the parameters of applied devices for angle location of microwave emitters, and on the construction and modes of operation of the observed transmitting antenna systems. An additional factor having the influence on DF of the radar, when are used systems installed on the UAV, is the rotation of the antenna of a radar. The accuracy of estimation of direction of any microwave transmitter is determined by the terrain properties that surround the transmitter and the objects reflecting microwave signals. The exemplary shapes of the radar antenna patterns and the associated relationships with the probability of remotely detecting the radar and determining its bearings are described. The simulated patterns of the signals received at an emitter-locating device mounted on a UAV and the expected results of a monopulse DF based on these signals are presented. The novelty of this work is the analysis of the DF efficiency of radars in conditions where intense multi-path phenomena appear, and for various amplitudes and phases of the direct signal and multi-path signals that reach the UAV when assuming that so-called simple signals and linear frequency modulation (LFM) signals are transmitted by the radar. The primary focus is on multi-path phenomenon, which can make it difficult, but not entirely impossible, to detect activity and location of radar with a low-flying small UAV and using only monopulse techniques, that is, when only a single pulse emitted by a radar must be sufficient to DF of this radar. Direction of arrival (DOA) algorithms of signals in dense signal environment were not presented in the work, but relevant suggestions were made for the design of such algorithms.

Kurzfassung: This article aims to propose an algorithm for the automatic recognition of selected radar signals. The algorithm can find application in areas such as Electronic Warfare (EW), where automatic recognition of the type of intra-pulse modulation or the type of emitter operation mode can aid the decision-making process. The simulations carried out included the analysis of the classification possibilities of linear frequency modulated pulsed waveform (LFMPW), stepped frequency modulated pulsed waveform (SFMPW), phase coded pulsed waveform (PCPW), rectangular pulsed waveforms (RPW), frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW), continuous wave (CW), Stepped Frequency Continuous Wave SFCW) and Phase Coded Continuous Waveform (PCCW). The algorithm proposed in this paper is based on the use of continuous wavelet transform (CWT) coefficients and higher-order statistics (HOS) in the feature determination of selected signals. The Principal Component Analysis (PCA) method was used for dimensionality reduction. An artificial neural network was then used as a classifier. Simulation studies took into account the presence of noise interference with signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in the range from −5 to 10 dB. Finally, the obtained classification efficiency is presented in the form of a confusion matrix. The simulation results show a high recognition test accuracy, above 99% with a signal-to-noise ratio greater than 0 dB. The article also deals with the selection of the type and parameters of the wavelet. The authors also point to the problems encountered during the research and examples of how to solve them.

Kurzfassung: This article analyses the possibility of using the Analytic Wavelet Transform (AWT) and the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) for the purpose of recognizing the intrapulse modulation of radar signals. Firstly, the possibilities of using AWT by the algorithms of automatic signal recognition are discussed. Then, the research focuses on the influence of the parameters of the generalized Morse wavelet on the classification accuracy. The paper’s novelty is also related to the use of the generalized Morse wavelet (GMW) as a superfamily of analytical wavelets with a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) as classifier applied for intrapulse recognition purposes. GWT is used to obtain time–frequency images (TFI), and SqueezeNet was chosen as the CNN classifier. The article takes into account selected types of intrapulse modulation, namely linear frequency modulation (LFM) and the following types of phase-coded waveform (PCW): Frank, Barker, P1, P2, and Px. The authors also consider the possibility of using other time–frequency transformations such as Short-Time Fourier Transform(STFT) or Wigner–Ville Distribution (WVD). Finally, authors present the results of the simulation tests carried out in the Matlab environment, taking into account the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in the range from −6 to 0 dB.

Kurzfassung: The capability of a radar imaging system to stay undetected while gathering data is one of the most desired for military reconnaissance systems. This is particularly difficult to achieve for synthetic aperture radar (SAR), that have to emit electromagnetic energy all the time during the operation and to move along a strictly defined route. Therefore the idea of a passive imaging system although encountering many constraints seems to be very interesting. The possibilities of a passive synthetic aperture radar system working with different types of emitters of opportunity are described in the paper. Impact of signal characteristics on image quality and geometry issues are discussed among others. Results of computer simulations of such a system implementing different imaging algorithms as well as the results of the experiment performed with passive SAR system model are presented.
