Abstract:
Rehabilitation for the cardiac transplantation recipient and his/her family merits further investigation, given the reported psychological difficulties patients and their families experience. The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of a structured short-term intervention group on cardiac transplantation recipients and their family members. Eight subjects and three family members participated in seven, 90-minute, weekly sessions led by a psychologist and a cardiac nurse practitioner. Affective state was assessed by the Profile of Mood States (POMS), administered before and immediately after the intervention. Levels of anger-hostility (POMS) were high pre-intervention (mean + SE: 17-9 ± 4-5) and were reduced following the group session (12.1 ± 3.5; p 〈 0.06). Our findings indicate that group intervention appears to provide clinical benefit in patients and family members following cardiac transplantation. Although these results are preliminary, they suggest a need for further investigation which can potentially inform and assist rehabilitation counselors in their work with cardiac transplantation recipients and their families.
