    Abstract: The resilience and sustainability of supply chains are facing new challenges due to the increasing complexity of supply chains. Compared to traditional supply chain networks, the Physical Internet (PI) has the potential to address sustainable development challenges and build resilient supply chain networks by providing interconnected and open logistics services. However, the interplay between resilience and sustainability has yet to be thoroughly explored in the PI-enabled supply chain literature. This paper aims to investigate the relationship between resilience and sustainability in PI-enabled supply chains. An innovative hybrid approach that combines the resilient-sustainable performance scoring method with mixed-possibilistic programming is proposed to trade-off and analyze the relationship between the two. Applying the concepts of resilience and sustainability to PI-enabled supply chains involves optimizing costs, sustainable performance, and resilience levels simultaneously. This enables coping with unforeseen disruptions from suppliers, plants, and PI hubs. The results of computational experiments have demonstrated that the PI-enabled supply chain exhibits stronger sustainable and resilience performance in dealing with random disruptions compared to traditional supply chains. The fruitful research yielded important management insights and practical implications, thereby contributing to the reinforcement of the literature on PI.

    Abstract: Background and Purpose— Genome-wide association studies found that the common allele T of single nucleotide polymorphism rs11206510 on chromosome 1p32 was associated with increased low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol levels (LDL-C) and with risk of coronary artery disease (CAD) in white populations. The goals of this study are to determine whether rs11206510 is associated with LDL-C and CAD in a different ethnic population, namely a Chinese cohort, and to investigate whether rs11206510 is associated with ischemic stroke. Methods— The association of rs11206510 with LDL-C was analyzed in 1415 Chinese Han subjects. The CAD study utilized a GeneID cohort with 1543 CAD patients and 1240 controls. For stroke studies, 2 independent cohorts were used and included the GeneID North cohort, with 1205 cases and 1205 controls, and the GeneID Central cohort, with 692 cases and 882 controls. Results— Different from white populations, the minor allele C of rs11206510 was associated with increased LDL-C levels in the Chinese Han population (adjusted P =0.002) and conferred risk of early-onset CAD (380 cases vs 1240 controls; adjusted P =0.002, odds ratio, 1.89), but not with overall CAD (adjusted P =0.82). The allelic association with ischemic stroke was highly significant in 2 independent cohorts, with adjusted P =1.13×10 −5 (odds ratio,1.71) in the GeneID North cohort and adjusted P =9.32×10 −5 (odds ratio, 1.70) in the GeneID Central cohort. Genotypic association was also significant for both early-onset CAD and ischemic stroke. Conclusions— Our results indicate that single nucleotide polymorphism rs11206510 is associated with LDL-C levels and early-onset CAD in the Chinese Han population. For the first time to our knowledge, this study also demonstrates that rs11206510 confers a significant risk of ischemic stroke.

    Abstract: The fecundity reduction with aging is referred as the reproductive aging which comes earlier than that of chronological aging. Since humans have postponed their childbearing age, to prolong the reproductive age becomes urgent agenda for reproductive biologists. In the current study, we examined the potential associations of α‐ketoglutarate (α‐KG) and reproductive aging in mammals including mice, swine, and humans. There is a clear tendency of reduced α‐KG level with aging in the follicle fluids of human. To explore the mechanisms, mice were selected as the convenient animal model. It is observed that a long term of α‐KG administration preserves the ovarian function, the quality and quantity of oocytes as well as the telomere maintaining system in mice. α‐KG suppresses ATP synthase and alterations of the energy metabolism trigger the nutritional sensors to down‐regulate mTOR pathway. These events not only benefit the general aging process but also maintain ovarian function and delay the reproductive decline. Considering the safety of the α‐KG as a naturally occurring molecule in energy metabolism, its utility in reproduction of large mammals including humans deserves further investigation.

    Abstract: The transition from vegetative to reproductive growth is very important for early maturity in cotton. However, the genetic control of this highly dynamic and complex developmental process remains unclear. A high‐resolution tissue‐ and stage‐specific transcriptome profile was generated from six developmental stages using 72 samples of two early‐maturing and two late‐maturing cotton varieties. The results of histological analysis of paraffin sections showed that flower bud differentiation occurred at the third true leaf stage (3TLS) in early‐maturing varieties, but at the fifth true leaf stage (5TLS) in late‐maturing varieties. Using pairwise comparison and weighted gene co‐expression network analysis, 5312 differentially expressed genes were obtained, which were divided into 10 gene co‐expression modules. In the MElightcyan module, 46 candidate genes regulating cotton flower bud differentiation were identified and expressed at the flower bud differentiation stage. A novel key regulatory gene related to flower bud differentiation, GhCAL , was identified in the MElightcyan module. Anti‐GhCAL transgenic cotton plants exhibited late flower bud differentiation and flowering time. GhCAL formed heterodimers with GhAP1‐A04/GhAGL6‐D09 and regulated the expression of GhAP1‐A04 and GhAGL6‐D09 . GhAP1‐A04 ‐ and GhAGL6‐D09 ‐silenced plants also showed significant late flowering. Finally, we propose a new flowering regulatory pathway mediated by GhCAL . This study elucidated the molecular mechanism of cotton flowering regulation and provides good genetic resources for cotton early‐maturing breeding.

    Abstract: It is well known that hypoxanthine (HX) inhibits nuclear maturation of oocytes by elevating the intracellular cAMP level, while melatonin (MT) is a molecule that reduces cAMP production, which may physiologically antagonize this inhibition and restore the meiosis process. We conducted in vitro and in vivo studies to examine this hypothesis. The results showed that 10 –3 M MT potentiated the inhibitory effect of HX on mouse oocyte meiosis by lowering the rate of germinal vesicle breakdown (GVBD) and the first polar body (PB1). However, 10 –5 M and 10 –7 M MT significantly alleviated the nuclear suppression induced by HX and restored meiosis in 3- and 6-week-old mouse oocytes, respectively. We identified that the rate-limiting melatonin synthetic enzyme AANAT and melatonin membrane receptor MT1 were both expressed in oocytes and cumulus cells at the GV and MII stages. Luzindole, a non-selective melatonin membrane receptor antagonist, blocked the activity of MT on oocyte meiotic recovery ( P & lt; 0.05). This observation indicated that the activity of melatonin was mediated by the MT1 receptor. To understand the molecular mechanism further, MT1 knockout (KO) mice were constructed. In this MT1 KO animal model, the PB1 rate was significantly reduced with the excessive expression of cAPM synthases ( Adcy2 , Adcy6 , Adcy7 , and Adcy9 ) in the ovaries of these animals. The mRNA levels of Nppc and Npr2 were upregulated while the genes related to progesterone synthesis ( Cyp11a11 ), cholesterol biosynthesis ( Insig1 ), and feedback ( Lhcgr , Prlr , and Atg7 ) were downregulated in the granulosa cells of MT1 KO mice ( P & lt; 0.05). The altered gene expression may be attributed to the suppression of oocyte maturation. In summary, melatonin protects against nuclear inhibition caused by HX and restores oocyte meiosis via MT1 by reducing the intracellular concentration of cAMP.

    Abstract: Male sterility is a simple and efficient pollination control system that is widely exploited in hybrid breeding. In upland cotton, CCRI9106, a photosensitive genetic male sterile (PGMS) mutant isolated from CCRI040029, was reported of great advantages to cotton heterosis. However, little information concerning the male sterility of CCRI9106 is known. Here, comparative transcriptome analysis of CCRI9106 (the mutant, MT) and CCRI040029 (the wild type, WT) anthers in Anyang (long-day, male sterile condition to CCRI9106) was performed to reveal the potential male sterile mechanism of CCRI9106. Results Light and electron microscopy revealed that the male sterility phenotype of MT was mainly attributed to irregularly exine, lacking tryphine and immature anther cuticle. Based on the cytological characteristics of MT anthers, anther RNA libraries (18 in total) of tetrad (TTP), late uninucleate (lUNP) and binucleate (BNP) stages in MT and WT were constructed for transcriptomic analysis, therefore revealing a total of 870,4 differentially expressed genes (DEGs). By performing gene expression pattern analysis and protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks construction, we found down-regulation of DEGs, which enriched by the lipid biosynthetic process and the synthesis pathways of several types of secondary metabolites such as terpenoids, flavonoids and steroids, may crucial to the male sterility phenotype of MT, and resulting in the defects of anther cuticle and tryphine, even the irregularly exine. Furthermore, several lipid-related genes together with ABA-related genes and MYB transcription factors were identified as hub genes via weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA). Additionally, the ABA content of MT anthers was reduced across all stages when compared with WT anthers. At last, genes related to the formation of anther cuticle and tryphine could activated in MT under short-day condition. Conclusions We propose that the down-regulation of genes related to the assembly of anther cuticle and tryphine may lead to the male sterile phenotype of MT, and MYB transcription factors together with ABA played key regulatory roles in these processes. The conversion of fertility in different photoperiods may closely relate to the functional expression of these genes. These findings contribute to elucidate the mechanism of male sterility in upland cotton.

    Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to propose an innovative integration method based on decision-theoretic rough set and the extended VlseKriterijuska Optimizacija I Komoromisno Resenje (VIKOR) methods to address the resilient-sustainable supplier selection and order allocation (SS/OA) problem. Design/methodology/approach Specifically, a two-stage approach is designed in this paper. First, the decision-theoretic rough set is employed to calculate the rough number for coping with the subjective uncertainty of data and assigning the weights for a resilient-sustainable evaluation criterion. On this basis, the supplier resilient-sustainable performance is ranked in combination with the extended VIKOR method. Second, a novel multi-objective optimization model is proposed that applies an improved genetic algorithm to select the resilient-sustainable supplier and allocate the corresponding order quantity under a multi-tier supplier network. Findings The results reveal that joint consideration of resilience and sustainability is essential in the SS/OA process. The method proposed in this study based on decision-theoretic rough sets and the extended VIKOR method can handle imprecise information flexibly, reduce information loss and obtain acceptable solutions for decision-makers. Numerical cases validate that this integrated approach can combine resilience and sustainability for effective and efficient SS/OA. Practical implications This paper provides industry managers with a new perspective on SS/OA from a resilience and sustainability perspective as a basis for best practices for industry resilience and sustainability. The proposed method helps to evaluate the resilient-sustainable performance of potential suppliers, which is applicable to solving real-world SS/OA problems and has important practical implications for the resilient-sustainable development of supply chains. Originality/value The two interrelated priorities of resilience and sustainability have emerged as key strategic challenges in SS/OA issues. This paper is the first study of this issue that uses the proposed integrated approach.

    Abstract: Flowering time (FTi) is a major factor determining how quickly cotton plants reach maturity. Early maturity greatly affects lint yield and fiber quality and is crucial for mechanical harvesting of cotton in northwestern China. Yet, few quantitative trait loci (QTLs) or genes regulating early maturity have been reported in cotton, and the underlying regulatory mechanisms are largely unknown. In this study, we characterized 152, 68, and 101 loci that were significantly associated with the three key early maturity traits—FTi, flower and boll period (FBP) and whole growth period (WGP), respectively, via four genome‐wide association study methods in upland cotton ( Gossypium hirsutum ). We focused on one major early maturity‐related genomic region containing three single nucleotide polymorphisms on chromosome D03, and determined that GhAP1‐D3 , a gene homologous to Arabidopsis thaliana APETALA1 (AP1) , is the causal locus in this region. Transgenic plants overexpressing GhAP1‐D3 showed significantly early flowering and early maturity without penalties for yield and fiber quality compared to wild‐type (WT) plants. By contrast, the mutant lines of GhAP1‐D3 generated by genome editing displayed markedly later flowering than the WT. GhAP1‐D3 interacted with GhSOC1 (SUPPRESSOR OF OVEREXPRESSION OF CONSTANS 1), a pivotal regulator of FTi, both in vitro and in vivo . Changes in GhAP1‐D3 transcript levels clearly affected the expression of multiple key flowering regulatory genes. Additionally, DNA hypomethylation and high levels of H3K9ac affected strong expression of GhAP1‐D3 in early‐maturing cotton cultivars. We propose that epigenetic modifications modulate GhAP1‐D3 expression to positively regulate FTi in cotton through interaction of the encoded GhAP1 with GhSOC1 and affecting the transcription of multiple flowering‐related genes. These findings may also lay a foundation for breeding early‐maturing cotton varieties in the future.
