Abstract:
We show experimentally that the transverse edge of recorded data can be determined by spatially differentiating the readback power spectrum with respect to the displacement of the recording head. This was accomplished using straightforward signal processing described here as the differential power spectrum. This technique can be applied to data tracks having pseudorandom data even in systems not possessing guard bands. We describe a multi-element head structure which may be used to exploit this phenomenon to realize a new continuously monitored track following servo system.
