Abstract: Self-inflating soft tissue expanders represent a valuable modality in reconstructive surgery. For this purpose, particularly synthetic hydrogels that increase their volume by swelling in aqueous environment are used. The current challenge in the field is to deliver a material with a suitable protracted swelling response, ideally with an induction period (for sutured wound healing) followed by a linear increase in volume lasting several days for required tissue reconstruction. Here, we report on synthesis, swelling, thermal, mechanical and biological properties of novel hydrogel tissue expanders based on poly(styrene-alt-maleic anhydride) copolymers covalently crosslinked with p-divinylbenzene. The hydrogels exerted hydrolysis-driven swelling response with induction period over the first two days with minimal volume change and gradual volume growth within 30 days in buffered saline solution. Their final swollen volume reached more than 14 times the dry volume with little dependence on the crosslinker content. The mechanical coherence of samples during swelling and in their fully swollen state was excellent, the compression modulus of elasticity being between 750 and 850 kPa. In vitro cell culture experiments and in vivo evaluation in mice models showed excellent biocompatibility and suitable swelling responses meeting thus the application requirements as soft tissue expanders.

Abstract: A combination of high-performing lanthanide metallocenes and tetrazine-based radical ligands leads to a new series of radical-bridged dinuclear lanthanide metallocenes; [(Cp* 2 Ln III ) 2 (bpytz˙ − )][BPh 4 ] (where Ln = Gd (1), Tb (2), Dy (3) and Y (4); Cp* = pentamethylcyclopentadienyl; bpytz = 3,6-bis(3,5-dimethyl-pyrazolyl)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine). The formation of the radical species is achieved via a controlled, stepwise synthesis and verified in all complexes by X-ray crystallography and SQUID magnetometry, as well as EPR spectroscopy of 4. Through the judicious choice of the Cp* ancillary ligands and by taking advantage of the steric effects imposed by their bulkiness, we were able to promote the trans coordination mode of the bpytz˙ − radical anion that enables stronger magnetic exchange coupling compared to the cis fashion. This yields a J Gd–rad = −14.0 cm −1 in 1, which is the strongest exchange coupling observed in organic monoanionic radical-bridged lanthanide metallocene systems. The strong Ln-rad exchange coupling was further confirmed by high-frequency EPR (HF-EPR) spectroscopy and broken-symmetry (BS) density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This combined with the highly anisotropic nature of Tb III and Dy III ions in 2 and 3, respectively, leads to strong SMM behavior and slow relaxation of the magnetization at zero fields.

Abstract: The study presents the results of a wide range of research approaches and surveys of the defunct mining centre at Buchberg in the region of Havlíčkův Brod, which was involved in silver production in the 13th and 14th centuries. Burchberg is exceptional in its size and well-advanced community infrastructure. Its significance is also reflected in written sources. Surveys and trial diggings focused on the residential area, and especially on the adjoining metallurgical facilities providing unique spatial information, as well as a wealth of valuable data obtained by analysing archaeometallurgical materials, representing the links in the operational chain, staring with the raw ore extraction and ending with the final production of the desired metals. The current deforestation of mining field relics enabled their three-dimensional survey, and, thus, providing a hitherto unknown view of the spatial structure of historical mining activities.

Abstract: The very early stages of alkaline activation of slag control its rheology and setting, but also affect its hydration, which occurs later. Simultaneously, these parameters are dictated by the nature and dose of the alkaline activator. Therefore, we investigated and compared the changes in slag particles (SEM, BET, laser diffraction), as well as in the pore solution composition (ICP–OES), pH, and conductivity, of alkali-activated slag (AAS) pastes containing the three most common sodium activators (waterglass, hydroxide, and carbonate) and water during the first 24 h of its activation. To ensure the best possible comparability of the pastes, a fairly nontraditional mixture design was adopted, based on the same concentration of Na+ (4 mol/dm3) and the same volume fraction of slag in the paste (0.50). The results were correlated with the pastes’ hydration kinetics (isothermal calorimetry), structural build-up (oscillatory rheology), and setting times (Vicat). Great differences were observed in most of these properties, in the formation of hydration products, and in the composition of the pore solution for each activator. The results emphasize the role of the anionic groups in the activators and of the pH, which help predict the sample’s behavior based on its calorimetric curve, and offer data for further comparisons and for the modelling of AAS hydration for specific activators.

Abstract: CZ: V předloženém článku je popsána srovnávací studie vodní stopy elektrické energie vyráběné ve dvou vodních elektrárnách provozovaných státním podnikem Povodí Ohře na vodárenských nádržích Přísečnice a Fláje v Krušných horách. Hodnota vodní stopy elektrické energie vyrobené v obou posuzovaných elektrárnách je srovnatelná s literárními údaji o vodní stopě vodních elektráren z ČR i světa. EN: The submitted article describes a comparative study of the water footprint of electricity produced in two hydroelectric plants operated by Povodí Ohře, a state enterprise, on the water reservoirs of Přísečnice and Fláje in the Ore Mountains. A gross consumption method was used to calculate the water footprint, which considers water losses from the reservoir at the level of the evaporation from the water surface. Since electricity generation on the water tank is only an additional purpose provided by the water tank, it was necessary to divide the water losses from the reservoir among the various purposes provided by the reservoir. Allocation based on the economic value of the individual purpose was used to allocate losses by evaporation to individual purposes. Water losses allocated to power generation account for less than 1% of total losses. The study showed that the water footprint of the electricity produced in the Přísečnice hydropower station is about 2 times larger than the water footprint produced in the Fláje hydropower station, mainly due to the different morphology of the two reservoirs. The water footprint value of the electricity produced in two hydropower stations assessed is comparable to literary data on the water footprint of hydroelectric power plants from the Czech Republic and the world.

Abstract: The majority of recently published studies indicate a greater incidence and mortality due to Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Hospitalization, older age, the use of antibiotics, immunosuppression, proton pump inhibitors (PPI), and chronic diseases such as CKD are responsible for the increased prevalence of infections. The aim of the study is to identify clinical indicators allowing, in combination with artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, the most accurate assessment of the patients being at elevated risk of CDI.

Abstract: Four pentacoordinate complexes, 1–4, of the type [Co(L1)X2] and [Co(L2)X2] (where L1 = 2,6-bis(1-octyl-1 H -benzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine for 1 and 2, L2 = 2,6-bis(1-dodecyl-1 H -benzimidazol-2-yl)-pyridine for 3 and 4; X = Cl − for 1 and 3, X = Br − for 2 and 4) have been synthesized, and their structures have been determined by X-ray analysis. The DC magnetic investigation confirmed the high-spin and anisotropic behavior of the metal centers of the reported compounds, and magnetic data were analyzed with respect to the spin Hamiltonian and the Griffith–Figgis Hamiltonian. CASSCF-NEVPT2 analysis enabled us to identify triaxial magnetic anisotropy for 1 and 2 and axial anisotropy for 3 and 4, and we discuss thoroughly the relationship between geometry and orbital ordering. The g -tensor components of the ground Kramers doublet extracted from EPR spectroscopy are compatible with this prediction of magnetic anisotropy. Simulated FIRMS experimental data of 2, 3 and 4 show very good agreement with theoretical calculations and provide precise values of zero-field splitting. The AC susceptibility measurements confirmed that the reported complexes were field-induced single-ion magnets. The slow relaxation of magnetization in 1 and 2 is mediated through two relaxation channels that are unusually close to each other. On the other hand, complexes 3 and 4 show the single-channel relaxation of magnetization, and their isostructural characteristic allowed us to study the relaxation changes caused solely by the replacement of terminal halido ligands. Finally, a wet lithographic technique has been used to evaluate both the processability of the complexes in solution and the preparation of microstructured films.

Abstract: The development of stable and reproducible inorganic pigments is noteworthy for industrial applications mainly considering more intense shades and low toxicity. Among the various candidates to substitute non‐hazardous red and yellow pigments, CeO 2 and CeO 2 :Pr have been attracting attention because of their opacity and high‐temperature stability besides being environmental‐friendly and health‐friendly. In this study, nanostructured CeO 2 and CeO 2 :Pr samples were synthesized using the polymeric precursor method and structural and optical characterizations were performed. Scanning electron microscopy reveals the morphology of CeO 2 nanoparticles in which the particle size ranges from 22 to 28 nm as a function of the annealing temperature. Pr‐doping does not show influence on the particle size. XRD results show that CeO 2 and CeO 2 :Pr samples crystallize in the cubic fluorite lattice with Fm 3 m space group. Raman spectra show the fluorite F 2g mode, confirming the XRD results. With Pr‐doping and the annealing of the samples, two bands are observed between 550 and 600 cm −1 , which are related to the defects in the fluorite structure associated with oxygen vacancies. XPS spectra reveal an increase in the ratio of Ce 3+ ions depending on the annealing temperature and Pr‐doping. This increase is associated with the carbon removal from the lattice by annealing. This behavior causes a change in the hue of the powders as the annealing temperature increases. According to diffuse reflectance and colorimetric measurements, CeO 2 shows a light‐yellow color due to the O 2pCe 4f transitions whose b* parameter mainly decreases with annealing, becoming almost white. The CeO 2 :Pr sample exhibits a red‐orange color because of the electronic transitions between 4f 2  → 5d 1 states of Pr 3+ . Upon annealing, L* and b* parameters decrease, resulting in a red‐brown shade. The charge compensation or charge transfer is responsible for the modification of the hue of these pigments.
